Eugene E. Carpenter, who is engaged as contractor and builder of Port
Washington,L.I. ,N.Y., was born at Searingtown, a town of North Hempstead,
L.I.,NY. His father, James Smith Carpenter, was also a builder, moved to
Manhasset when Eugene was a lad of some 12 years and there the latter lived
until his marriage. When sixteen years of age our subject began work with his
father, under whose able instruction he learned his trade. He was married in
1872 to Miss Sarah Jane Fearon. Her parents were still living, making their
home in Brooklyn, in which city Mrs. Carpenter was educated. While still an
apprentice, Eugene E. assisted his father in building the house which he moved
into soon after his marriage. It was while at work on this dwelling that he
became acquainted with his future wife. Their union has been blessed by the
birth of three children, Eugene, Jr; William and Elsie.. The elder son is
also following the carpenter's trade, which he learned with his father.
William is assisting his father in his business. In politics our subject is
a strong supported of Republican principles and doctrines and in 1872 cast
his first Presidential ballot for Grant. He was elected trustee of the Jones
poor fund, but refused to serve in this capacity. He is a charter member of
Protection Engine Co. #1, of which he is foreman. Socially, he is an active
worker in Worth Lodge # 210, F. & A.M. which meets in the German Masonic
Temple in New York City.

In 1892 at the age of 41, became a Volunteer Firefighter with the newly formed Protection Engine Co. No. 1 in Port Washington, L.I., New York;
In 1894 appointed Chief with command of Atlantic Hook & Ladder Company No. 1 (org.1886) & Protection Engine Company No. 1 (org. 5 Apr 1892) before the Port Washington Fire Department was formed (25 Mar 1907) joining both companies, and Flower Hill Hose Company No. 1 (org.1905), and elected in 1907 as the first Fire Chief of the newly formed Port Washington Fire Department.
Remained an active member of the Port Washington Fire Department throughout his life and was present as a veteran firefighter at the 50th Anniversary celebration of Protection Engine Company No. 1 in April 1942.

Policeman Coles Carpenter , while stepping out of a car last July, Policeman Coles Carpenter fell on a rusty nail,wounding his right leg. Mortification set in and last December that amputation was necessary.
After he had been told by experinced Surgeon's that his leg must be amputated and that even then his life might not be spared Policeman Coles Carpenter is about again on crutches and will soon be able to use both his limbs as well as ever. A priest had been summoned to administer the last rites of the church to Carpenter. before an operation when Dr. Raymond Sullivan. a young Intern at St. Mary's Hospital. said he thought he could save both life and limb. By alternately baking the leg, which had been poisoned by a rusty nail, to a heat of 200 degrees and then plunging it Into a freezing ammonia tank, the blood was driven out, carrying the impurities along with it and halting the mortification. which had set in. Physicians who were 'called into the case said that the policeman undoubtedly owed not only saving of his limb, but his life to the young intern.
