Notes

2148. Benjamin S. Carpenter

Number 1004 in the Carpenter Memorial.  Page 162
Family on page 285 (#344).    A Tailor.

DEATH: Death location - See Bainbridge note below for change in county and town names.
NAME:  Middle name may be Samuel as his father was named Samuel.
SEE: Mother's notes regarding Benjamin being cited in a will.
DEED: The deed which Benjamin Carpenter secured his Bainbridge property from James
W. Wilkin, executor of the estate of his uncle, bears the date of March 26,
1799.  In it he is described as of Goshen, a tailor.
Born in Goshen, NY in 1767, he had married at Goshen on March 13, 1797.
Catherine Salmon or Solomon (family spells it the former way, Goshen register
latter).  He moved to Bainbridge the year of the date on the deed.  His share
of the property included about 250 acres including the land upon which the
village of Bainbridge is located.  For many years he kept a tavern there.  His
wife died in 1827 and he died in 1833, froze to death, I am told (in 1898) by
relatives, during a terrible blizzard. (per Amos B. Carpenter).

Early settlers in the Town of Bainbridge taken from "1874 History of Chenango
& Madison co.s, NY" by James H Smith; pub. 1880. Tried to use year, where
stated, person and where they were from.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
BAINBRIDGE was constituted a town and named Jericho, Feb. 16, 1791, at which
time it formed a part of Tioga county. Name changed April 15, 1814 to
Bainbridge. It originally included portions of Norwich and Oxford, which were
taken off Jan. 19, 1793; of Greene, one part of which wsa taken off Mar. 15,
1798, and another the following year; and the present town of Afton, which
was taken off Nov. 18, 1857.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Territory including this town was first claimed by Robert HARPER, under a
grant from the Indians, but State repudiated the title and granted it,
together with the town of Afton, to the "Vermont Sufferers", by whom the
first settlements were made.
The Vermont sufferers were persons who, by reason of their allegiance to the
Government of the State of New York during the controversy existing between
it and the State of Vermont, immediately after the close of the Revolutinary
war, relative to lands which were finally ceded to the latter State, were
dispossed of certain property and otherwise punished by the Great Mountain
State; and who, as a recompense therfor, were granted lands in the townshiop
of CLINTON, afterwards known as JERICHO [Bainbridge], embracing the whole or
the major portions of the present towns of Bainbridge and Afton.
Feb. 24, 1786, Col. Timothy CHURCH and Majors Wm. SHATTUCK & Henry EVANS, to
the former of whose regiment the majority of the sufferers belonged,
presented, in their behalf, a petition to the New York State Govement. [I
previously posted separately the list of "Vermont Sufferers", many of whom
soon after became settlers upon this tract and pioneers in this portion of
the State.]
The following persons also had grants, viz:
(a long list that includes)
1800
John CAMPBELL, Scotchman and Benjamin S. CARPENTER, Orange co. and
Major Frederick DEZANG, Frenchman; came from Geneva soon after 1800.

Catherine Solomon

NAME: Soloman, Salman.
Catherine Salmon or Solomon (family spells it the former way, Goshen register
latter).  Another record, by Miss Annie lists it as Soloman.

5171. Kate Carpenter

Was she the one who married a Morgan?  Marriage may be to the wrong person.

2149. Daniel Carpenter

Number 1002 in the Carpenter Memorial.  Page 162
Family on page 285 (#343)    Daniel married twice.

QUESTION:
Was there a second child named Arminda in this family? Or only one?

On Sunday last. about dark, a fire broke out in the office of the Orange
Eagle, owned by WILLIAM A. CARPENTER, in Goshen, which in a short time was
entirely destroyed, together with all the printing materals, a quantity of
pape,  the books, &c. not an article was saved.  The loss of Mr. Carpenter is
supposed to have sustained is 1000 dollars.  The fire, it is conjectured,  caught
from the stove.  This accident has caused a suspension of the Eagle,  but we
understand, that e will resume its publication in a short time...Newburgh
paper.

Number 2300-a on page 286 of the Carpenter Memorial. No family listed.

NOTE: He drew portrait sketches for his father's newspaper.  He became sickly and died young.
Per Terry Lee Carpenter, "The 1850 census shows him as "Car" Carpenter a grocer in Buffalo."
Name in secondary sources sometimes list him as Carnard.

NAME:
Carnard Carpenter and Carnot Carpenter appear to be the same person, and who was born October 6 1820 and died December 27, 1853 in Buffalo, New York. He was the son of Buffalo newspaper publisher William Allison Carpenter (1781-1858) and Elizabeth Edsell (1786-1868), and was a descendant of William Carpenter (1605-1658/1659) of Rehoboth, Bristol, Massachusetts.

CONFLICT:
Carnot died in 1853?  But why do I find him in later census records? Were there two Car Carpenters (#1 abt 1833 who died in 1853 and #2 abt 1915/1917?)  - Two different people!
PARENTS:
The different death dates has caused a question of which Carpenter line is correct. One lineage is Providence, RI and the other is Rehoboth, MA. this is Group 2 and 3 respectively in the Carpenter Cousins Y-DNA Project. Finding a Y-DNA descendant to test is the big question.

About Abraham CARPENTER he was 56 y 10 m when he died*, and is thought by Delaware County Family researchers as being a brother of Daniel J. CARPENTER, and they married twin sisters of Rev. Gilbert and Sarah CARPENTER, who lived in Goshen, Orange Co., NY and Luzerne Co.,PA before removing to Delaware Co.,OH abt 1809. No will or statement for Abraham, but he is buried in the same cemetery as Daniel, by his side is a son John, son of Abraham and Mary “Polly” CARPENTER, d 1820. Email from Florabel C. Lacher dated Saturday, October 23, 2004 stated the United States Census in 1790, the first census for Luzerne County, PA Kingston Township, lists Abraham CARPENTER on pg 146.
What do you have on Mary “Polly” CARPENTER? Do you have her date of death and source of this information. Also marriage application?

5208. Salome Carpenter

PARENT: Likely by JRC
I have found one (1) strong possible parent that meet the Ontario County, New York and Delaware County, Ohio requirements.  This has the highest probability for being the parent of Salome Carpenter b. 1804 NY.
This is Abraham Carpenter-20260 who has 3 females under age 10 in the 1810 Census in Ontario County, NY. His wife was Mary “Polly” Carpenter-22836 and had the father named Rev. Gilbert Carpenter-13165 (b. 1746 NY – d. 1819 in Delaware County, OH).

PARENT:  (discounted by JRC)
Believed to be a John Carpenter  (Maybe John C-68173)

Father:  unknown
Mother:  unknown
NOTES: This John Carpenter arrived in Trenton Township, Delaware County, Ohio between 1814 and 1820 from
Seneca, Ontario County, New York where he was listed in both the 1800 and 1810 censuses. In the 1800
census he was living next to an older Carpenter by the name of Abraham who must have died by the time
of the 1810 census because John and his family were listed alone. We know our Carpenters lived in this
part of Ontario County, New York because John's daugther Salome stated in a War of 1812 pension appli-
cation that she saw her future husband (Josiah "Isaiah" Heddins) leaving for war in May 1813, enlisting
in nearby Geneva, New York, and returning in 1814. Next in the timeline, according to Salome, she and
Isaiah were married in Delaware County, Ohio on 10 Feb 1820 by Rev. Gilbert Carpenter (of unknown
relation). For some reason, this John Carpenter doesn't appear in the 1820 Ohio census, but does show
up in the 1830 census, living near his daughter Salome Heddins and her family. In that census, John was
listed as being between 60 & 70 years of age. A male and female, both between 20 & 30 years old, along
with a boy under 5 were living with him. John shows up in the tax records until 1837 and his is not
        listed in the 1840 census.

Two other Carpenter families had moved westward to Delaware County, Ohio in the early 1800s, the first
being Capt. Nathan Carpenter who moved from Rehoboth, Mass. to Chenango, NY to Liberty Township in
Delaware County in 1801. The next group were two brothers and their families--Benjamin in 1808, followed
by Rev. Gilbert. They first moved from Goshen, Orange County, New York, then to Luzerne, Penn. and next
to the Sunbury area of Berkshire Township in Delaware County. See more information at books.google.com
in the 1880 "History of Delaware County & Ohio" book.

Subject: Re: John Carpenter & daughter Salome (Siloma)

Hi John.
Sorry for the delay in replying. Thanks for your email and for the attached Carpenter/Heddins information. I notice that most of that Heddins information was gleaned from my own research, posted on my website (Heddins.com) and on FindAGrave.

According to Salome’s War of 1812 pension application (where she tried to get a pension based on Josiah Isaiah Heddins’ service), she stated that she saw him leave for war in May 1813 (she was 9 years old then!), enlisting at Geneva, Ontario County, NY, and she saw him when he returned after the war. The 1800 & 1810 censuses of Seneca, Ontario County (Seneca is about 6 miles from Geneva) listed John Carpenter and his family. It’s possible that Abraham living next to John in 1800—being older than John—could’ve been his father, or possibly an older brother. Here’s a link to John Carpenter’s page on my website: https://freepages.rootsweb.com/~heddins/genealogy/Heddins/HeddinsTree/fam00021.htm

Salome states that she and Josiah Isaiah Heddins married on 10 Feb 1820 by Rev. Gilbert Carpenter in Delaware County, Ohio. Gilbert’s FindAGrave memorial states he died in 1819, but other sources I found he died as late as 1823 (so that may be true that he married Josiah & Salome in early 1820). At first I figured there was probably a family connection between Salome & Gilbert, but he arrived in Delaware County about 1808 from Luzerne, PA (and Goshen, Orange Co, NY before that…according to the 1880 “History of Delaware County & Ohio” book—see books.google.com), but I don’t believe John/Salome had ever lived in Luzerne. Perhaps John & Benjamin were relatives who—although one went to upstate NY and the other to PA—met up again in Ohio. Isaiah & Salome lived in Berkshire Township near these Carpenter families from Luzerne: Gilbert (Sr. & Jr.), Samuel, Daniel & Robert.

Attached is the 1820 tax record of the Carpenters & Heddins in Delaware County. You can see that Benjamin Carpenter Sr. lived in 17/4/1, the same quadrant where Isaiah & Salome lived. But the John Carpenter listed there was living in nearby Harlem Township in 16/3/3. I don’t see any other John Carpenter in the county (after John—son of Nathan—died in 1811), so I think that’s the John from Seneca. The attached Delaware County map was made in 1849 after John Carpenter & the Heddins moved to Illinois, so unfortunately we don’t know exactly where they lived, but tax records show John lived in the 16/3/3 quadrant of Harlem Township & the Heddins in the 17/4/1 southeast corner of Berkshire Township closest to Harlem Twp.

I feel pretty certain that John Carpenter was Salome/Siloma’s father, not just because they show up living near each other in the 1830 census (that’s subjective), but because of her own words that Josiah enlisted at Geneva, NY, and I consider finding the Carpenters living within 10 miles of Geneva in Seneca as a pretty good clue. Until I found the 1800 & 1810 census listings in Seneca with a John of the right age, I had my doubts.

What I’ve gathered—much from that above mentioned book—was that there were three sets of Carpenters who moved westward to Ohio: Capt. Nathan Carpenter (about 1801, from Rehoboth, MA to Chenango, NY to Liberty Twp, Delaware Co, OH), Gilbert & Benjamin Carpenter (about 1808, from Goshen, Orange Co, NY to Luzerne, PA to near Galena, Berkshire Twp, Delaware Co, OH) and my Carpenters who moved from Seneca, Ontario County, NY to Trenton/Berkshire Townships, Delaware Co, OH between 1814 & 1820. But I haven’t been able to trace where John Carpenter (and the Abraham listed next to him in 1800) moved to Seneca from.

Also attached are some slides from a presentation on the Heddins family I gave at a Heddins family reunion last year here in East Texas.

Glad to have someone to put my head together with in this search! Thanks much.

Roland

Salome Carpenter married Josiah Isaiah Heddins on 10 Feb. 1820 in Berkshire Township, Delaware Co, Ohio.
Josiah and Salome started their family in Ohio and a few years later moved west to Coles County, Illinois where they lived the remainder of their lives.Josiah (later called Isaiah) and Salome Heddins had thirteen children together, including six who apparently died before reaching adulthood.

Josiah "Isaiah" Heddins
Birth: 10 Mar 1794 New York, USA
Death: 29 Jul 1866 (aged 72) Charleston, Coles County, Illinois, USA
Burial: Mount Tabor Cemetery, Campbell, Coles County, Illinois, USA
Memorial #: 31888252
Bio:
Josiah Isaiah Heddins first went by the name Josiah but in his later years was going by Isaiah. It is not certain who his parents were, but it is believed he was a son of John Hadden who had been a private in the Revolutionary War. Pvt. John Hadden was a son of Capt. John Hadden.
Census records indicate Josiah was born in New York State, but he only first shows up in the 1820 census of Delaware County, Ohio, right after his service in the War of 1812.
Josiah Heddins married Salome Carpenter (pronounced Sa-low-me) on 10 Feb. 1820 in Berkshire Township, Delaware County, Ohio.
They started their family there and within a few years had moved west to Coles County, Illinois, settling just outside of the town of Charleston in Pleasant Grove Township.Isaiah & Salome had thirteen children together, including five boys and one girl who didn't reach adulthood.
The ones who are known to have lived beyond infancy are: John Heddins, James Heddins, Abram Heddins, Mary Heddins Ferguson Oscar Heddins, Henry Harrison Heddins, Charles Heddins. All but James--who moved to Texas in about 1853--raised their families & died in Illinois.
At least in his elder years Isaiah was described as an invalid. It's possible that he sustained an injury during his service in the War of 1812.

2155. John Carpenter

PARENTAGE:
Due to many John Carpenters in and around Ulster and Sullivan Counties, the parentage is uncertain.
The following are possibilities for this John Carpenter. RIN is record information number from the Carpenter Cousins genealogical database.
1) John Carpenter-18976 b. abt 1750 of Stamford, Delaware, NY. Father is Joseph Carpenter-13142 who married a Smith.
2) John Carpenter-20266 b. abt 1752 of Orange County, NY. Father is Benjamin Carpenter-4918 who married Mary Combs.
3) John Carpenter-111585 b. abt 1754 of Chester, Orange, NY. Father is Benjamin Carpenter-2758 who is confused with BC-4918 who married Mary Combs.
4) John Carpenter-175138 b. abt 1756/1766 of, Pawling, Dutchess, NY. Father is Anthony Carpenter-175135.
5) John Carpenter-5053 b. abt 1740 of, Jamaica, Queens, LI, NY - d. 18 Nov 1775 NY.

NOTE:
Sullivan County, NY was created in 1809 from Ulster County, NY (original county from 1683).
Orange County was first created in 1683 and reorganized with its present boundaries in 1798.

REVWAR:
Reportedly made gun powder during the American Revolutionary war. THIS HAS BEEN CHALLENGED BY THIS PERSON. WHY? Because since the 1880s peple have believed the John Carpenter who made gun powder was Judge John J. Carpenter-13065 (1745-1800). Yet another John Carpenter among many!  Kathryn Dahl is researching that her John Carpenter also had a mill and likely was involved in gun powder making during the REVWAR.

NOTICE:  Kathryn Dahl - officerkitten@gmail.com - cited vited email on 3 May 2024 ...
It seems there are two John's producing powder whose data should be kept separate, at this time, and who have possibly been convoluted over the centuries. Standing alone, what I have is clear on John 178719. I go to the exact point named in the obit and find exactly what is stated, on top of that I can prove he had a mill in Lumberland. -noone has done that before with this John.
Please do not include that powder maker deed from 1783 to John J. As of right now there isn't enough direct proof it is him in that location. You should even leave that deed off my john178719 for now...
John J data puts him at the falls on Murderers Creek with a mill. That is a red flag that we are dealing with two different people, with the same name, doing the same thing. Vincent Matthews gristmill is on Murderer's Creek, mortgage 1763. LINK I also don't see anything in the congressional papers about Murderers creek or the name John J.
"For all that certain Lott piece or parcel of land situate lying and being at Mathewsfield in the county of Orange in the said province of NY being part of the said Tract of land where on Nathaniel Bubois now dwells beginning at a small white ash sapling marked standing on the Bankside of the Murderers Creek on the south side thereof which sapling is about two chains from the uppermost part and beginning of the Falls”
The property of 'the other' powder mill was described as "Greycourt creek where the public road leading from Washingtonville to Chester crosses the creek, and 5 miles south of Washingtonville…at this place during the Revolution there was a forge and powder mill.” written 1847/48. I have the deeds on Cromline/greycourt called 'The Forge Place'. This location is a 2.5 hour walk from the southernmost twist of Murderers Creek.
Both locations are described in the same History Of Orange Co book you cite- written 1881. pg 636
I can confirm Colvil's son sells the land at the mouth of the Beaver Brook, Lot 19 to John178719's son John in a quit claim deed for cheap. Yes, Daniel C Carpenter Died 1823, Sarah Moffat Died 1840 and Jesse Carpenter Died 1847 are Colvil's children. The Moffat children are the only living nieces and nephews of Jesse in 1847, with no living children or grandchild -per probate.

MILL: 1796
COMMENT:  Beaver Brook and the mention of a mill in 1796.
Regarding John Carpenter and the mill he recently built as part of a property deed description that was not his in a 1796 property deed.
Lot nineteen in the seventh division of the Minisink patent and mentioned is the mill owned by John Carpenter that was on Beaver Brook per the image Kathryn Dahel sent me on 24 Apr 2024.  No doubt a Patent map would put the lot real close to the southern end of Beaver Brook. AKA near the “mouth” of the brook.

Beaver Brook starts at the south west end of Toasperns Pond between Irishtown Rd. and Woods Rd on 22 NY just west of Yulan, NY.  It goes south through Schumacher Pound and Woods Rd roughly parallels it just to the west of it. Beaver Brook crosses under 97 and empties into the Delaware river bordering NY and PA.  The brook travel just under 4 miles from the North to the South.
The entire book distance was covered by Ulster County between 1789 and 1799 per Historical County Maps online. See:

There is an unnamed road heading north off of 97 (in Barryville) to:  41.488506, -74.949493 - This road is now part of the KC Adventure Base.  If I was going to construct mill, I would partly dam the brook near the location given on Beaver Brook which is up stream just past a bend in the canyon.  JRC
NOTE:
Barryville is a hamlet (and census-designated place)[1] in Highland, Sullivan County, New York, United States. Previously known as "The River," the hamlet was renamed for William T. Barry, postmaster general under President Andrew Jackson.
History
Barryville is a hamlet in the Town of Highland. The town was created by an act of the County Board of Supervisors on December 17, 1853. The Town of Lumberland was subdivided into the present day Towns of Lumberland, Highland and Tusten because the traveling distance for town meetings was too great. The town takes its name from highland ridges above the Delaware River. It was first inhabited by the Lenape and the trappers of Minisink and Mamakating. Colonial period hunters, trappers and lumbermen were drawn to Highland because of its streams and lakes, dense hardwood and conifer forests and wild game.
On July 22, 1779, the Upper Delaware's only major Revolutionary War battle was fought on the plateau above Minisink Ford. The battle was fought between the colonial militia of Goshen who suffered a devastating defeat against a group of Indians and Tories commanded by Mohawk Chieftain Joseph Brant. Highland was settled sometime after the War towards the turn of the century. The former hamlet of Lumberland Post Office, now Eldred, was established by 1814.

Recap -  Hugh Gregg sells to John Carpenter in 1786 whose partner is Benjamin Carpenter gets property in 1798 then in 1806 it goes to his wife (Tryphena Gregg) and ward (James Gregg).  Data references a 1789 indenture then transfer to Benjamin Carpenter by John Carpenter for $1 dollar and paper work. Then it ends with a James Carpenter testifying he saw this indenture going to wife Tryphena and ward James by John Carpenter in 1806.
Speculation by JRC is that John Carpenter is not present or deceased and unable to respond to the Court to verify the transfer?

Great. I figured as much. I don't know what that is on findagrave!
I would like to point out that John (246526), was not born in Lumberland. Both his sons John and Joseph state in 1855 census, they moved to Lumberland in 1792 from Orange, (6 and 3 years old respectively). This John(246526) of Lumberland is in several books as a pioneer in the Beaver Brook region of Lumberland. He also owns a watch in 1816, and has an enslaved person in 1800. He paid a teacher to teach the children of the area in the early days of the community. He had money. Books - Reminiscences by JW Johnston and History of Sullivan County: Embracing an Account of Its Geology, Climate ...By James Eldridge Quinlan. 1810 census for Lumberland is missing a page on Ancestry and Familysearch and the historical society FYI.
John's (246526) granddaughter's obit states he was making gunpowder in Craigville during the revolution.
I have found a deed of Colvil's sons and John of Lumberland's son interacting. I'm still working on this and will update you when I have more.

BLOOMING GROVE:  Wikipedia
Blooming Grove is a town in Orange County, New York, United States.
Vincent Mathews was likely the earliest settler who purchased the Rip Van Dam patent in 1721, built a grist mill and named his settlement "Mathewsfield." He is the father of David Mathews, a Loyalist who was Mayor of New York during the American Revolutionary War, and Fletcher Mathews, also a Loyalist and alleged abettor to schemes against the newly forming republic.
The town of Blooming Grove was formed from the town of Cornwall in 1799.
In 1830, the town of Hamptonburgh was established from part of Blooming Grove. Another part of Blooming Grove was taken to form the town of Chester in 1845.

WALLKILL: Wikipedia
Wallkill is a town in Orange County, New York, United States. The population was 30,486 at the 2020 census. It is centrally located in the county. Interstate 84 crosses New York State Route 17 in the southern part of the town. U.S. Route 6 and New York State routes 17K, 211 and 302 also cross portions of the town.
The original land patent for the town was dated 1724, but little was done for decades to develop and settle the region. The town was established in 1772, but part of the town was lost upon the formation of Ulster County. Wallkill's claim to fame during the American Revolution was the production of gunpowder in factories in Phillipsburgh and Craigville for American troops by Henry Wisner and his son-in-law Moses Phillips.1

HIGHLAND:  Wikipedia
Highland is a town in Sullivan County, New York, United States. The population was 2,196 at the 2020 census. The town's name denotes its location on elevated ground north of the Delaware River. The town is in the southwestern part of the county.
The town was formed from the Town of Lumberland in 1853. Barryville is named for William T. Barry, postmaster general under President Andrew Jackson. The community grew up around the Delaware and Hudson Canal, which opened in 1828 and operated until 1898. The canal ran through what is today the center of the hamlet, and the canal company operated a number of stores, an office and a dry dock there.

LUMBERLAND: Wikipedia
Lumberland is a town in Sullivan County, New York, United States. The population was 2,243 at the 2020 census.
The Town of Lumberland is a rural community in the southwestern part of the county.
The town was formed in 1798 from the Town of Mamakating, but was subsequently reduced to form other towns in 1807 and 1809. The town was partitioned in 1853 into three parts, Lumberland, Highland, and Tusten.
Lumberland in its current form began to blossom when the Delaware and Hudson Canal opened in 1828. The canal helped transport Anthracite coal from the mines of northeastern Pennsylvania to the burgeoning markets of major cities. Settlements that popped up along the canal included Pond Eddy, Knights Eddy, Handsome Eddy, and Mongaup. When the canal was phased out due to the advent of railroads on the Pennsylvania side of the Delaware, its bed was converted into the current New York State Route 97 in the 1930s.

Birth: unknown
Death: 27 Apr 1849 Elmira, Chemung County, New York, USA
Burial: Old Second Street Cemetery, Elmira, Chemung County, New York, USA
Memorial #: 220163708
Bio:
The petition of John Carpenter at the Surrogate's Court in Elmira, Chemung County, New York, stated his father died April 27, 1849 in Elmira and that he had the following named heirs: Widow, Rebecca and children, James Carpenter, Daniel B. Carpenter, the petitioner John Carpenter, William Carpenter, Benjamin Carpenter, Betsey Cook, Rebecca Campbell, and grandchildren, children of Sally VanSickle, deceased, Willian VanSickle, Thomas VanSickle, Betsey VanSickle, Daniel VanSickle, Elijah VanSickle, and Lewis VanSickle, all minors, except William VanSickle.

He was undoubtedly buried in the Baptist Cemetery (Wisner) in Elmira. In 1875, a survey was done, with 227 legible memorials, in preparation for closure and the creation of a park. His name was not amongst the list, though the wife of his son John, who died in 1841, was included. The city removed the remains, that had not previously been removed by heirs to Woodlawn Cemetery. HIs remains would have been lost in any type of transition in 1876, unless his family had previously removed his remains to Second Street Cemetery, where many Baptist Cemetery remains were removed too.

Any newspaper clipping I provide always cites the source. The Elmira newspapers are online on a free site

The search portion of the site doesn’t often pick up a name from the newspapers, so you often have to go looking through each newspaper.
Furthermore, - “that said Deceased died at his place of residence in said town of Elmira on the 27th day of April last past” refers to the most recent date, even though the language may seem confusing in modern times.

2163. Benjamin C. Carpenter

Dennis wrote:
I believe it is quite evident that Benjamin C. Carpenter was a son of
Joshua and Sarah (Burt) Carpenter.   He was probably one of the 3 males
under 10 years old in 1800 census. He was 26-44 in 1820, 30-39 in 1830,
and 50-59 in 1840 census', making him born about 1790, unless he is
marked in the wrong catagory in 1840, then born between 1790-1800.  1850
census, Veteran, Chemung, NY, Eunice Carpenter is age 54, born NJ, Eliza
Spencer is in this household, and named in the will.
Dennis Carpenter
The year 1790/1791 is consistent with all the census options. Actually mid to late 1790 to early 1791 matches best.
John Hawthorn Carpenter was born 2 May 1791, Chemung Town, Tioga, NY.  This rules out early 1791.  This leaves the period of about May to July 1790 as an option.
