Mary Elizabeth Carpenter Manning
Birth: 11 May 1882
Death: 12 Feb 1965 (aged 82)
Burial: Pine Grove Cemetery, Manchester, Hillsborough County, New Hampshire, USA
Plot: Charles Manning Plot close to the Carpenter Family Mausoleum.
Memorial #: 43999818
Bio:
Mary Elizabeth Carpenter married the boy next door, Charles Bartlett Manning. They built a home along Ray Brook on Elm Street north of Webster Street. Their home is now the parish house of the Brookside Congregational Church. Mary Manning would follow in her father's footsteps in being one of the city's great philanthropists.
Her daughter, Priscilla Manning Sullivan inherited the Carpenter House upon her grandfather's death in late 1938. She offered it for use by the Red Cross at the start of World War II, and that organization moved into the building in 1941. The transfer of ownership from Priscilla Sullivan to the Red Cross became official in 1993 at which time a Historic Preservation Easement clause was added to the deed which names the Manchester Historic Association as the overseer of any renovations or changes to the structure both on the exterior and the interior, and to certain elements of the landscaping (including the large copper beech tree). The easement also covers the original furniture that remains in the house. It was the first such easement placed on a Manchester property and was done to help preserve the historical nature of the building. The Red Cross expanded the Carriage House in 1994 to provide additional office space.Family Members

Bio:
Charles B. Manning, who studied at MIT as well as Harvard, became an engineer like his father. They worked together at the Amoskeag before Charles set up his own consulting business. Charles married Mary Elizabeth Carpenter, the girl next door.*** A terrible tragedy occurred on February 11, 1924.*** The three Manning brothers, Charles (50), Robert (52), and Francis (34), were on a trip to Lake Tartleton in Grafton, New Hampshire. They were avid outdoor enthusiasts, and had taken this trip many times before. This time they decided to walk to their destination on the railroad tracks, after getting off at the station. Suddenly, an unscheduled train traveling over 40 miles an hour came around the bend and struck them. They were killed instantly. Their companion, Ralph Reed, a Manchester auto dealer, was injured, but survived. The train was pulling Henry Ford's private railroad cars, which were being transported to Canada. The engineers never saw the men. They decided to stop the train a few miles later, when they spotted a knapsack hanging from the engine. The death of the "Manning boys" was a terrible shock to all who knew them.***

Birth: 16 Jun 1899 Manchester, Hillsborough County, New Hampshire, USA
Death: 8 Aug 1982 (aged 83) Exeter, Rockingham County, New Hampshire, USA
Burial: Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Arlington County, Virginia, USA

Memorial #: 43922271
Bio:
"John L. Sullivan, the Secretary of the Navy in the Truman Administration, has died at the Exeter Hospital in Exeter, New Hampshire. He was 83 years old."After serving in two senior civilian posts for the Navy, he was sworn in as Secretary of the Navy in 1947, replacing James V. Forrestal, who became the nation's first Secretary of Defense. However, his tenure as Secretary ended abruptly in April 1949 when he resigned in protest over cancellation of the Navy's first supercarrier. A vigorous proponent of a strong Navy, he created something of a furor in Washington with his frank explanation of his sudden resignation. In a letter to the Secretary of Defense, he said that he was "very deeply disturbed by the first attempt ever made in this country to prevent the development of a powerful new weapon."
"John Lawrence Sullivan was born in Manchester, New Hampshire, June 16, 1899. His father, a cigar maker, was also a lawyer who dabbled in politics. He graduated from Dartmouth College, where he earned a reputation as a fine debater. In 1923 he was admitted to the New Hampshire Bar, one year before he received his Bachelor of Laws degree from Harvard Law School. He joined his father's firm, Sullivan & White, in Manchester and five years later,in his first bid for public office, was elected on the Democratic ticket as Solicitor of Hillsborough County. He became first a partner, then sole owner of the law firm of Sullivan & Sullivan. He tried twice, in 1934 and in 1938, to become Governor of New Hampshire. Defeated by 1,500 votes in his first encounter, he lost by a considerably larger margin to a Republican incumbent in the second outing.
"He went to Washington in 1939 as Assistant to the U.S. Commissioner of Internal Revenue. Within three months, he was appointed Assistant Secretary of the Treasury by President Franklin D. Roosevelt. Over the next five years, his competence and political acumen propelled him into a figure of national prominence. In 1947 he was awarded both the Treasury Department's Distinguished Service Award and a Silver Medal for presenting the President's wartime budget to the Congress and for work on wartime finances from 1941 to 1945. Near the end of World War II, he was appointed Assistant Secretary of the Navy for Air and was sworn in on the deck of the USS Shangri-La in the Pacific Theater. That year he traveled 25,000 miles in an effort to learn everything he could about the wartime Navy. He was soon appointed Under Secretary of the Navy, a post he held until his elevation to Secretary.
"After his stormy resignation, he resumed his law practice and became active in Democratic politics. He played a leading role in Truman's aborted campaign for a full second term in 1952. In 1974, he was a major backer for Senator Henry M. Jackson's early efforts to test the political waters in a bid for the 1976 Presidential race. He also served as a director of Aluminum Ltd., the Brown Company, Metro-Goldyn-Mayer, Martin Marietta Corporation and National Savings and Trust. He is survived by his wife, Pricilla, of Manchester; a son, Charles, and two daughters, Patricia and Deborah. A funeral mass will be held in Manchester."

Notes for John Henry Carpenter:
John Henry was a sailor for 18 years and "seasick for 15 of those years." When
Karl and Herbert were grown, he bought a farm with them in West Enfield. With
the older boys grown, Zettie took Harry and Mildred to the Boston area to be
near her oldest daughter, May. 4 Aug 1909, John H. and Zettie B. Carpenter
sell land in Trenton to Rita J. Grant. (461, 454, Hancock Co. deeds)
John Henry went out west for his health, about the time his son Karl did. They
worked on a dam there. Jerry Carpenter remembers:
It was in Wyoming and there was a terrible sickness that invaded the camp.
Many of the camp members didn't survive, but Karl did and returned to Maine. I
think this was about 1909-1910. Karl corresponded with one of his camp mates
up until Karl died in 1971.
John's death certificate lists tuberculosis as the cause of death. John Henry
gave his sons middle names that could be used as last names, should they ever
want or need to drop the last name of Carpenter. It was never known just why
we might need to drop the name of Carpenter? Once when he was pulling little
Karl Harrison on a sled, Karl fell off. John picked him up and said, "I
wouldn't want to lose my little president, now would I?" This seems to say
that Karl's middle name was chosen from the president William Henry Harrison.
There is an old picture of John H. taken in 1882, when he was 27. he had just
returned from a voyage to Germany as first mate on a square rigger.
1880 census lists John H. as a sailor, living with his widowed mother in
Trenton.
1900 census lists him as a farmer, owned his farm, no mortgage. Sons Herbert
and Karl were in school 8 months of the year, could read and write.

From Ellsworth American, May 22, 1883 "Luther P. Joy, son of the late Horatio
N. Joy committed suicide at his residence this morning. Mr. Joy was about 28
years of age and a very industrious and upright young man. He leaves a widow
and one child.
Zettie B. Romer sells land in Ellsworth, homestead of Horatio N. Joy, as widow
of Luther P. Joy, December 24, 1889 (232,469 Hancock Co. deeds). the Joy
homestead "Joyville" outside Ellsworth, maybe toward Mariaville. (V.C.C.)
When Zettie was living in Massachusetts, her grandson Hervey recalls his father
Karl packing up barrels of vegetables to send to her in the fall. She'd come
to visit in the summer.
Prior to her final illness, she resided at 5 Morse's Pond in Wellesley, Mass.
She died in Westborough State hospital of myocardial failure due to
arteriosclerosis.
