Helen M Meserve Carpenter
Birth: 11 May 1911 North Parsonsfield, York County, Maine, USA
Death: 8 Dec 2010 (aged 99) Waterboro, York County, Maine, USA
Burial: North Pine Grove Cemetery, North Waterboro, York County, Maine, USA
Memorial #: 134792343
Bio: Waterboro Helen M. Carpenter, longtime teacher, community member, and affectionately called (Gram) by those who knew and loved her, passed peacefully on December 8, 2010 at Sedgewood Commons in Falmouth. Helen lived her 99 years with grace and dignity; teaching several generations of children, starting from her early days at the one room school house on West Road until her retirement from the Waterboro School System 35 years later. Helen was born on May 11, 1911 in No. Parsonsfield, the daughter of Wilbur and Annie (Chadbourne) Meserve. At an early age, she moved to East Waterboro with her family and graduated from Waterboro High School in 1927 and from Gorham Normal School in 1929. Helen met and married her husband, Austin Carpenter in 1933 and together moved to the Carpenter farm which had been in the family for over 100 years. They were blessed with two children, Patricia and Gordon. Helens days began early with chores that needed to be done on the farm before she headed out each morning for school. Her true kindness came through each day as she never skipped a beat whether it was taking her classroom on a field trip or returning home to find she needed to set a couple of extra plates around her table. She loved having friends and family at her home during the holidays. They would sing around the piano and the grandchildren would be out playing in the fields behind the house and barn. Helen will be remembered for her homemade bread and bringing a hot loaf from the oven over to the neighbors. Mrs. Carpenter was a faithful member of the No. Waterboro Community Baptist Church and was very active within the church. She also belonged to the Ladies Aid Society and the Ladies Auxiliary of the Fire Department. Helen also belonged to the NEA, Maine Retired Teachers Association, and the York County Teachers Association. Helen was an independent woman with a great sense of humor who retained her drivers license well into her 90s. She and her sister enjoyed spending several winters together in Florida following her retirement from teaching. After living independently until she was 96, Helen moved into Assisted Living at the Osher Inn in Portland. She was very happy there, meeting new friends and participating in their activities programs. Helen loved children and she never tired of teaching in her community. She was happiest surrounded by her large and extended family. She not only touched many of her students lives, but she set an example of unconditional love for her family and instilled a sense of pride for doing a full days work. She possessed a smile that lit up the room when she walked in. Her memory will be shared and cherished by those who had the good fortune of knowing, Gram Carpenter. She is survived by her daughter, Patricia Carpenter Haskell of Portland and her daughter-in-law, Diana Rogers Carpenter of Florida; Five grandchildren, Eugene Haskell and wife Pam of No. Dakota; Neil Haskell and wife Anne of Portland; Dana Haskell and wife Karen of Virginia; Scott Carpenter and wife Laurie of Falmouth and Lori Stephens of Saco; 11 Great Grandchildren and 3 Great-Great Grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband Austin Carpenter in 1969 and by her son, Gordon M. Carpenter in 2006; and by one sister, Doris Hanson and three brothers, Paul, Melvin and Raymond Meserve. Family and friends are invited to call on Tuesday, Dec. 14th from 6 8 p.m. at the Autumn Green Funeral Home, 47 Oak Street in Alfred. A Funeral Service will be held on Wednesday, December 15, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. at her church, the No. Waterboro Community Baptist Church with Rev. Timothy Hutchins, officiating. Committal prayers and burial will follow at the Pine Grove North Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made the Maine Childrens Cancer Program, 100 Campus Dr, Scarborough, ME 04074 or to the No. Waterboro Community Baptist Church, P.O. Box 3, No. Waterboro, ME 04061. The Autumn Green Funeral Home is respectfully handling arrangements.Family Members
