Death: 18 Apr 2005 (aged 87) Greene County, Pennsylvania, USA
Burial: Rosemont Cemetery, Rogersville, Greene County, Pennsylvania, USA
Plot: Area 4
Memorial #: 82237583
Bio:
S. Burdette Carpenter , beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend, died Monday, April 18, 2005, in the Rutan-area family farmhouse, where he was born June 8, 1917, a son of J. Leslie and Velma Meek Carpenter .

Growing up, he played violin in the Grange Junior Orchestra, graduated from Center Township High School in 1935 and attended Penn Commercial in Washington for business.

He married Bettie L. Blake September 30, 1946, and had five children, eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

His favorite pastimes in retirement were joking with family and friends, raising his cows and sitting on the porch of the family farmhouse watching the traffic not go by. His ever-present smile will be sorely missed.

Mr. Carpenter was a lifelong member of Rogersville United Methodist Church, where he was a trustee and member of the choir for many years. He always carried Lifesavers and gum to give the children at church.

He operated a farm with his family throughout his life, initially as a dairy and later as a beef cattle farm. In addition, he was a member of Local 186 of the Building and Trades Labor Union of Brownsville, working construction for many years. In 1971, he became assistant superintendent of highways for Pennsylvania Department of Transportation in Greene County and retired in 1979 as superintendent.

Burdette was a 58-year member of Knights of Pythias Lodge Graysville 165, holding all offices within the local lodge and was trustee of the Grand Lodge and honorary past grand chancellor. He was a charter member of Center Township Lions Club, a member of Elks Club, a 75-year member of Harvey's Grange and a member of Rogersville Volunteer Fire Department.

He was an active member of the Democratic Party, serving as a committeeman for many years.

Surviving are his wife, Bettie; a son, John and wife Holly Orndoff Carpenter ; a daughter, Linda and husband Tad Klaner; a son, Kevin and wife Armina Price Carpenter ; a daughter, Peggy Carpenter ; granddaughters, Heather Klaner-Wilson, Tiffany and husband Thomas Hart, Angie and husband Luke VanDyne and Jessica Carpenter ; grandsons, Jason Carpenter , Todd Klaner, Justin and wife Jessica Tedrow Carpenter and Glenn Klaner; great-granddaughters, Sydknee Carpenter , Kaylen Klaner-Wilson, Mackenzie Carpenter , Lexie VanDyne; a great-grandson, Ian VanDyne; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

His brother, Charles L. Carpenter , and a son, Donald, are deceased.

Friends will be received from 2 to 9 p.m. Wednesday in Rush Funeral Home Inc., Rogersville, where services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, April 21, with the Rev. Bruce R. Judy officiating. Interment will follow in Rosemont Cemetery, Center Township. The family suggests memorial contributions to Rogersville United Methodist Church, 102 Church Street, Rogersville, PA 15359. Friends and family may view the obituary and send condolences and flowers at www.rushfuneralhomeinc.com.

Subject: Re: Looking for Augustus Carpenter, Jr.
Thanks.
The last of my known Carpenter cousins are/were Thornton Chard Carpenter (cousin Tony) b. 29 Apr 1941 . . . married several times but never sired any children . . . and George Benjamin Carpenter b. 4 Apr 1947 d. 20 Jun 2013 . . . married twice but never sired any children. They are the sons of George Benjamin Carpenter b. 2 Aug 1902 d. 2 Jul 1961 (younger brother of my grandmother, who I remember vaguely as an old man . . . I think I was probably about 5) and Beatrice Barcley Chard 18 Nov 1909 - 8 Jan 1958. Since they were my mother's first cousins, there was some discussion about whether George would come live with us when his parents died when he was so young, but he ended up living with much older cousins (Manierres) who lived down the street from us on 69th street in NYC.
My grandmother was Katherine Snow Carpenter who was George Albert Carpenter's daughter . . . from the wedding notice where I first saw Augustus Carpenter Jr. She married Edward John Bermingham II and had 4 children, the third of which was my mother Harriet Isham Bermingham. My mother married Robert Ernst Carroll, hence my Carroll last name. I married Lloyd Austin Patterson, but did not take on his last name, and have 2 sons, neither of whom have the Carpenter name.
Let me know if you need more from my branch of the family. I believe that one of my cousins still bears Carpenter as a middle name.
