FAIRMONT — Mary Carpenter Jordan, 100, of Charlotte, N.C., formerly of Fairmont, passed away Thursday (Oct. 13, 2011).
Mary was born Aug. 26, 1911, to the late David and Maggie Morris Carpenter of Bunner Ridge.
In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband of 65 years, Walter Jordan; brothers, Herschel and Denzil Carpenter; and sisters, Bertha Carpenter, Enid Neel, Virginia Carpenter and Ramah Timms.
Mary was a longtime member of the Baptist Temple in Fairmont and worked tirelessly for her church and various civic and service organizations. She worked for several years at Jones Department Store. Mary took exceptional pride in maintaining a place filled with home-preserved foods, baked goods, handmade quilts and needlepoint pieces. She particularly enjoyed tending to her gardens and showcasing her beautiful flowers. In addition to traveling throughout the United States and Canada, she especially enjoyed her trips to Europe, China and Australia.
Mary is survived by two sons, Edwin Jordan and his wife Suzy of Parkersburg, and David Jordan and his wife Teresa of West Columbia, S.C.; and one daughter, Mary Ann Hettich and her husband Martin of Matthews, N.C.
Other survivors include four cherished grandchildren, Bryan and his wife Jean of Burlington, Ky., Jennifer Jordan of Gahanna, Ohio, Allison Merchant and husband Lew of West Columbia, S.C., and Adam Jordan and his wife Laura of Columbia, S.C. She was blessed with 10 great-grandchildren, Samantha, Kathryn, Lauren and Joseph Jordan, Casey "C.J." Jordan, Tradd, Abigail and Taylor Merchant, and Emily Kate and Annalee Jordan.
Memorials may be made to the Baptist Temple, 430 Morgantown Ave., Fairmont, WV 26554.
The graveside service is scheduled for 11 a.m. Tuesday at Mount Zion Cemetery with Dr. Holley Faulkner Jr. officiating.

The deceased was an elder in the Fairview M. E. Chruch on Bunner's Ridge and funeral services will be held there on Sunday morning at ten o'clock by the Rev. Curtis. The body will be buried in the Fairview Cemetery by undertaker Jenkins. (Note: he is buried in the Hayhurst Cemetery.)

Funeral services for James Carpenter, 63 years old, whose death occurred suddenly yesterday morning in his home in Rivesville will be held at 1 o'clock tomorrow in the Methodist Episcopal Church South, in Rivesville, and will be concluded at the Methodist Episcopal Church in Meadowdale and burial will be in the Meadowdale Cemetery by Carpenterr & Ford. Mr. Carpenter was a son of Mrs. Jane Carpenter of Hammond. He is survived by his mother, his widow who formerly was Miss Ella Keener and the following children, Milton, Fred and Ernest and Mrs. Beulah Hall and Mrs. Hallie Copley of Rivesville. Seven brothers and three sisters are also living. They are Ott Carpenter of Bentons Ferry; John Carpennter of Clarksburg; William Carpenter of Wheeling; George Carpenter of Hammond; Charles Carpenter of Moatsville; Mrs. Victoria Keener of Rivesville; Mrs. Nora Huey of Watson; Mrs. Maude Vandergrift of Hammond.
