Robert Ruliph Morgan (R. R. M.) Carpenter (July 30, 1877 – June 11, 1949) was an American executive and member of the board of directors of DuPont.
Biography
Known as "Ruly", Carpenter was educated at the Hillman Academy in his hometown of Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania and at Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He worked in his family's hardware store before joining DuPont as a district purchasing agent in 1906. He married Margaretta Lammot du Pont, the sister of company president Pierre S. du Pont, on December 18, 1906, and began working under another brother, Irénée du Pont in the development department, of which he was named director in 1911. Carpenter was instrumental in guiding the company's diversification outside the explosives industry, being appointed to the executive committee and serving on the board of directors from 1914 until his death in 1949. During his tenure, he held positions including head of personnel and vice president. His younger brother, Walter S. Carpenter, Jr., was President of DuPont from 1940 to 1948.
In 1940, Carpenter joined the Board of Trustees of the University of Delaware, and was a major catalyst for the development of its athletic program, personally funding the construction of a new gymnasium. In 1943, he purchased the Philadelphia Phillies of the National League. He left day-to-day control in the hands of his son, R. R. M. Carpenter, Jr., who continued his father's tradition of substantial support for the University of Delaware’s athletic program after his father's death.
Carpenter also served as president of Wilmington's Homeopathic Hospital, as a trustee of Philadelphia's Academy of Natural Sciences, and as director of the Girard Trust Company, and of the Philadelphia, Baltimore and Washington Railroad.

32465. Walter Samuel Carpenter

Walter Samuel, Chairman, Finance Committeee, and Vice President of E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Co., Director, General Motors Corp.  Educated: Cornell University.
He headed his company during its transformation from a producer of expolsives to a diversified chemical firm.

Walter S. Carpenter Jr.(1888-1976) served DuPont for eight decades. While a student at Cornell University, Carpenter learned applied engineering in DuPont’s summer programs at Gibbstown and Carney’s Point, New Jersey. In 1909, in the fall of his senior year, he quit school to manage DuPont’s Chilean nitrate interests. In 1911 he became assistant to older brother R. R. M. Carpenter in the fledgling Development Department. There, and later as vice president in charge of development, Carpenter helped guide DuPont’s early diversification into celluloid and dyes. During World War I, Carpenter became a member of the War Executive Committee and when in 1919 Pierre du Pont restaffed the Executive Committee with a group of younger executives, Carpenter, at 31, was the youngest. Two years later he became treasurer of DuPont and in 1927 he was appointed to the board of directors of General Motors, a position he held until 1959.

During the Great Depression, Carpenter pushed the company’s leaders to accept and adapt to increased government regulation of corporate affairs, although he was overruled by the du Ponts. Upon Lammot du Pont’s departure in 1940, Carpenter took over the presidency, becoming only the second non-family member to hold the position up to that time. Carpenter soon faced the challenge of World War II, and under his leadership, DuPont supplied explosives and a host of other products to the war effort. He also guided DuPont’s heavy involvement in perhaps the most ambitious research and development undertaking in history, the Manhattan Project. Carpenter stepped down as president in 1948, but continued to serve as chairman of DuPont’s Board of Directors until 1962. He was appointed honorary chairman that same year, a position that he held until 1974.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Walter_S._Carpenter,_Jr.
Walter Samuel Carpenter, Jr. (January 8, 1888 - February 2, 1976) was an American corporate executive from Wilmington, Delaware who oversaw the DuPont company's involvement in the Manhattan Project to produce an atomic bomb for use during World War II. In 1919, at age 31, Carpenter was the youngest man elected to DuPont's board of directors, and the first who was not from the du Pont family. During his tenure on the board he served as treasurer from 1921 until 1940, as chairman of the finance committee from 1930 until 1940, as president from 1940 until 1948, continued as chairman until 1962, and as honorary chairman until 1974. He also served on the board of directors of General Motors from 1927 until 1959.
Born in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania to Walter Samuel Carpenter and Isabella Morgan, Carpenter studied mechanical engineering at Cornell University, and participated in DuPont’s summer programs at Gibbstown and Carneys Point, New Jersey, before dropping out of school his senior year to manage DuPont’s Chilean nitrate interests.
He began working with one of his two brothers, R. R. M. Carpenter, in 1911, helping guide the company’s development of celluloid and dyes. He married Mary Wootten in 1914. Carpenter was responsible for DuPont's 1933 acquisition of Remington Arms and its partnership with IG Farben for producing war supplies.
Carpenter remained involved with Cornell University after he departed, serving on its board of trustees. His donation of $500,000 made the construction of Lynah Rink possible, named after a DuPont coworker and Cornell athletic director James Lynah. Carpenter also donated $1 million for the construction of Carpenter Hall, which houses the engineering library.

Burial: First Marion Baptist Church Cemetery, Commiskey, Jennings County, Indiana, USA

Memorial #: 48910294
Bio:
This memorial appears to be duplicated at #125299396.  Although it appears this was created first, it is not clear to me that Rosa was buried at Comminskey.  Her headstone there does not reflect a death year.  Her death certificate shows her to be buried at Uniontown Cemetery with her first husband Wilmer Sage and her headstone there does show a death year that agrees to her death certificate.

Per Bev Weddell
I believe that David and Lafayette are one and the same...either David Lafayette or Lafayette David...there is no death year on the one stone for him which he shares with his first wife but there is on the second one with Rosa.

David Lafayette “Lafe” Carpenter
Birth: 31 Dec 1863 Jackson County, Indiana, USA
Death: 3 Sep 1944 (aged 80) Paris Crossing, Jennings County, Indiana, USA
Burial: First Marion Baptist Church Cemetery, Commiskey, Jennings County, Indiana, USA
Plot: Row 6
Memorial #: 48910293
Bio:
David Lafayette "Lafe" Carpenter was married twice. He has two grave markers in the same cemetery but he is NOT buried with either of his two wives.

1) He married Ruth Brooks (Memorial #: 48910292) on 7 Oct 1887 in Indiana. She died in 1938. She is buried in the First Marion Baptist Church Cemetery under the marker WITHOUT a concrete base marked with "CARPENTER" with the names "David L." and "Ruth B."  For this marker AND this Memorial record the entry for "David L." (aka "Lafe") is considered a MEMORIAL MARKER.

2) He married Rosa (nee Finley) Sage, a widow of Wilmer Sage (Memorial #: 125299158), on 8 Mar 1940 in Jennings County, IN.  She died in 1965 and she was buried in Uniontown Cemetery with her first husband.  This is confirmed by her death certificate and family.  See Memorial #: 125299396.
There is a MEMORIAL MARKER for Rosa in the First Marion Baptist Church Cemetery at the marker WITH a concrete base marked with "CARPENTER" with the names "Lafe" and "Rosa."  But only "Lafe" (aka David Lafayette) is buried in that plot.See Memorial #: 48910295.
Inscription: NOTE: This is a MEMORIAL MARKER only for David Lafayette Carpenter - He is buried elsewhere in the same cemetery.
