In 1773, highway districts were set out, viz.: in the First society, five districts, under the care of Thomas Baker, Jonathan Allen, Jonathan Lyon, Jedidiah Bugbee, Matthew Bowen; New Roxbury society, four districts, Daniel Paine, southeast overseer; Benjamin Haywood or Howard, southwest; John Perrin, 2d, northwest; Samuel Narramore, northeast; North society, Caleb May, southeast overseer; Ephraim Carpenter, northeast; Eliakim May, northwest; Stephen Tucker, southwest. A communication relating to Colonel Putnam's petition for a public highway to New Haven leading through Windham County was favorably received by the town, and referred to the consideration of the selectmen. New roads were laid out from time to time in different parts of the town, connecting with or replacing the old range-ways originally laid out.

Grave of Elijah Carpenter
The stone above was the most captivating one that I found in the Old Burying Ground. At the top, it has a rather ordinary image of two urns separated by a pilaster, but that is not what is interesting about it. What is interesting is the story relayed by the inscription and by the destruction to the top of the stone. The inscription reads: Mr. Elijah Carpenter
died May 19, 1808
in his 65 Year.
In his life he was a patron of piety
he had long maintained a bright
hope of a Glorious resurrection
But his death was attended
with alarming circumstances -
he SHOT himself - Psalms [?]
BESTILL AND KNOW THAT I AM GOD

I have never seen a stone that acknowledged the deceased's suicide before, and I certainly never expected to find one in an old New England graveyard such as this one. Though I believe that Protestants were historically more forgiving of suicide than Catholics were, I would still expect that they would view it as a sin. Even if they did allow victims of suicides to be buried in their cemeteries, I wouldn't expect an explicit reference to the cause of death on the stone. Yet the reference is there, and is part of an inscription that suggests not a small amount of compassion and sympathy for the man on the part of his family or community. Clearly, his death was shocking, and describing it on his grave may have provided his survivors with a way of gaining psychological control over what happened - if they couldn't change it, they could at least explain it in their own words. However, it seems clear that the people responsible for the inscription didn't want the manner of Elijah Carpenter's death to completely overshadow the piety of his life.
Then there is the top of the stone. It has been extensively broken and repaired, and the stone has been reset on a new base. Could someone have inflicted the damage intentionally? Someone with a bit less sympathy for Elijah Carpenter's plight than the people who erected the stone? Or am I reading too much into this?

at 77 years, and Olive, his wife who died March 30, 1850 at 64 years. Both

Also, where does Thomas Carpenter belong?....He died Aug 17, 1851 at 25 years
of age. He is buried at the Madison Township Cemetery in Madison, Ohio. His
wife was Almeda Maria Genung who was born at Penn Yan, NY. They were members
of the Baptist Church. They had children Alice M. b. 1849 d. 1901, and Henry
T. Carpenter/der who lived later near Dubuque, Iowa.
Is Thomas the child of the first couple listed above?
The SECOND Carpenter/der in my line (may or may not be related to the above
family) is Charles Carpenter born about 1785 and died in 1854. He married
Sally Lewis who was born in 1797 in NY. They had children Minerva Carpenter
(b. 1823 in NY), Eliza Carpenter, Destamonia D. Carpenter (b. 1828), Mary
Carpenter (b. 1831, Sarah Carpenter (b. 1834), David H. Carpenter (b. 1836),
there were probably others..
Some of this family later lived in Superior Township, Washtenaw Co. MI.

In the 1820s, Daniel moved to Montgomery AL, where he had a business. He married c10 Mar 1830 in Montgomery AL to Sarah Hammett Shaw [MCA]. She was reported to be Sarah H. Norton, widow of Charles Shaw [ABC].
Daniel/7 Carpenter wrote his will in 1837 in Norwich CT. It was probated in Montgomery Co. AL, where it is on record in Will Book 2, pages 175-180. The probate record begins with depositions of witnesses to the will, which depositions are dated 20 Oct 1837 at Norwich, New London Co. CT. The witnesses were Dr. Richard T. Tracey, Burrel Lathrop, and John T. White. The will was written by "Daniel Carpenter of Montgomery in the State of Alabama, now living in Norwich, County of New London, Connecticut." It includes bequests to his "beloved wife
Sarah H. Carpenter" to whom he bequeathed his mansion house in Montgomery and other items, his brother Gardiner F./7 Carpenter, his brother-in-law Walter Lester and the four children of his late sister Mary Ann/7 (Carpenter) Lester, his brother-in-law Seth Robinson and children Daniel C. Robinson and Sarah C. Robinson, and his sister Nancy/7 Carpenter, all of Norwich. The will is dated 8 June 1837.
Daniel/7 Carpenter died on 11 June 1837 in Norwich. Daniel/7 Carpenter's brothers and sisters were Charles/7 Carpenter, who resided in Boston MA, Alfred/7 Carpenter, Gardiner/7 Carpenter, Betsey/7 Carpenter, Nancy/7 Carpenter, and Mary Ann/7 Carpenter, who married Walter Lester in 1821. It is not clear from this will which of the sisters married Seth Robinson, though it can be inferred that it was Betsey/7 Carpenter, as she is the only sister not otherwise specified in the will. The probate records do not mention any children of Daniel/7 Carpenter. His widow, Sarah H. (Shaw) Carpenter, married on 1 Jan 1840 in Montgomery AL to Thomas Welch [MCA].

I am descended of Gardner Carpenter b. 3 Jul 1788 in NY (RI?) d. 11 Mar
1849 in Dane County, WI and married Sophia Burdick 11 Sep 1814 in
Linklachen, NY. According to Johnson, THE DESCENDANTS OF ROBERT
BURDICK, Gardner's parents were Josheph Carpenter and Lydia Greeman of
Berlin, NY. According to an old family Bible (I have photocopies of the
pages) Gardner had the following siblings:
