Gary Carpenter
March 6, 1955 ~ February 3, 2018 (age 62)
Obituary
Peterborough, NHGary Carpenter, 62, of Peterborough, died on February, 3 2018 at Monadnock Community hospital after a courageous battle with esophageal cancer. He was born in Somerville, MA on March 6, 1955, the son of Herbert Carpenter and Hazel (Hughes) Carpenter.
Gary grew up in Somerville MA where he attended local schools. At a young age he joined the United States Air Force where he proudly served. Later in life, Gary’s devoted his time to helping people and veterans suffering from substance abuse and addiction issues. As veteran who once faced these same struggles, he felt this was truly his mission in life.
Gary went back to school and achieved a double master’s degree form UMass Boston, one being in Mental Health & Rehabilitation Counseling. He worked extensively at the Phoenix House in Keene, New Hampshire, serving as a drug and alcohol counselor for over a decade. Gary was part of numerous related organizations and initiatives, such as The Veterans Business Owner’s Association which he co-founded.
Some of Gary’s other passions included playing & teaching basketball, reading, community involvement, and enjoying his family. Gary ran for state representative of the town of Peterborough just a few years ago, as he wanted to be a voice for his community. Gary’s biggest joy was his family. He raised 7 children, instilling that same educational and entrepreneurial spirt that was passed down to him from his father.
Gary had amazing qualities that made him unique. From his positive energy, to his unparalleled determination, to his down-right silliness. His favorite expression was NEVER GIVE UP! - which he lived by each day. Gary left countless impressions with so many people that will never be forgotten.
He is survived by his wife of more than 20 years, Maria (Kelley) Carpenter of Peterborough; his children Gary Carpenter and his wife Julie of Weare, Jamis Carpenter of Portland, ME, David Still of Dover, NH, Virginia Fulton and her husband Josh of Hancock, Alexander Carpenter of Peterborough, Kristopher Carpenter and his fiancé Leona Duval of Peterborough, and Jessica Knappe and her husband Thomas of Keene; his grandchildren Joshua, Darin and Francesca Fulton, and Cameron and Aubree Carpenter; his three brothers Herbert Carpenter and Robert Carpenter, both of Plattsburg, NY, and John Carpenter of Poway, CA; along with his many nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his sister Elizabeth Carpenter, and his beloved dog Lilly, whom he loved like another of his children.
A celebration of Gary’s life will be held on Saturday, February 17th, between 1pm – 4pm, at the Hilltop Country Club in Peterborough NH, (casual/informal attire). A special military honors presentation is planned for 1:30pm during the service.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial contributions be made in Gary’s name to The Esophageal Cancer Awareness Association at https://www.ecaware.org/give/donate/

Phyllis Lucile Carpenter Hand
Birth: 25 Oct 1931 Ely, White Pine County, Nevada, USA
Death: 18 Apr 2011 (aged 79)
Burial: Idaho State Veterans Cemetery, Boise, Ada County, Idaho, USA
Memorial #: 68602707
Bio: Phyllis Lucile Carpenter Hand October 25, 1931 - April 18, 2011 Phyllis Hand, 79, passed away April 18 in Boise due to complications from a recent stroke. Phyllis was the middle child born to John "Jack" Clarence Carpenter of Houlton, Maine and Lucile Magnuson Carpenter of Ely, Nevada. Along with her brothers John and Jake, she grew up during the Great Depression and WWII. Ely, the Magnuson Ranch and her extended family were the center of her physical universe, and their memories endured throughout her lifetime. She graduated with honors from White Pine County High School in Ely and the University of Nevada in Reno, where she was a business administration major. Early in her senior year, Phyllis met a recent Korean War veteran, David Hand, on a blind date. By Thanksgiving, she took David to "The Ranch" and they were married on June 28, 1953. After David completed his master's degree in geology, they lived in Kimberly, Nevada, Maple, Ontario, and Montpelier, Idaho. When David became legally blind in 1964, Phyllis and David bought a family business in Idaho Falls, Idaho. Their six children grew up at the Falls View Motel, and many of her best friendships were formed during the Idaho Falls years. Phyllis and David moved to Boise in 1975; except from 1979-81, they have been Boise residents. As a small business owner and the spouse of a visually-impaired veteran, Phyllis was, by nature and by necessity, an incredibly independent person. Trained in business, she and David were a true team through good times and dark times. No person was more selfless than Phyllis. As a wife, she was always where David needed her to be. As a parent, she gently empowered her children and set examples by her actions more than her words. As a grandparent, she was present and available. As a friend, she was committed and caring. As a citizen, she was involved in her community. As a Roman Catholic, she was quietly devout and service-oriented. Phyllis would give the shirt off of her back and, in truth, she did. Even when life's circumstances left them with little to give, Phyllis and David gave more. The best and most recent example is their service at the Corpus Christi House, a homeless day shelter, where they have volunteered every Tuesday for many years. Their lesson to us all is that, when you have nothing material to give, you can still give your time and talents. Phyllis carried that spirit to her family's life as well. She lived for her children, grandchildren and an extended family network. Each of us has many special memories that demonstrate her love and dedication—sitting at a basketball game, making a unique blanket, celebrating birthdays. She was a giving caretaker, a skill that she needed more than she would have wished. Phyllis is survived by her husband, David Hand, of Boise, and their children and partners: Kathi Hand, of Seattle, David Hand and Dianna Santos, of Boise, Karen (Hand) and Russell Comstock, of Boise, John and Loraine Akins Hand, of Boise, Marty Hand and Chrissy Roehrman, of San Jose, and Kris (Hand) and Shane McNevin, of Spokane. Her grandchildren are Emma McNevin, Gabriella Hand, Leaha Hand, Andrew Hand, Thomas McNevin, Morgan Hand, Alyssa Santos, Jared Hand, Ryan Hand, Kate McNevin, Rorie Hand, Myles Sansotta, Tony Johnson, and Christine Sansotta. Myles and his wife, Erin Hibbard Sansotta, brought their new daughter Molli to Boise in the months before Phyllis' death. Survivors also include her brothers John (Roseann) Carpenter of Elko, NV, and Jake (Norma) Carpenter of Bakersfield, CA, and her sister-in-law Merilyn Rinchen Hand of Paia, Hawaii along with many nieces and nephews. Her nephew and niece, John T. Carpenter and Vitina Reminger of Boise, cousin Paul Carpenter of Elko and cousin Mike Carpenter of Houlton, Maine were especially close to Phyllis. Her former son and daughters-in-law are William Johnson, Kelly Reich, Amy Walker, and Jennifer O'Reilly. She was preceded in death by her dear cousin, Mary Catherine Clarke, of Louisville, Kentucky, whose funeral coincided with the hour of Phyllis' death. The long list of meaningful friendships she had is too long to print?but you know who you are and we thank you. Her dearest friends include Mary Kay Pendrey, Sister Mary Louise Deroin, Hermie Belliet, and Gerry Wielang. The family appreciates Phyllis' co-workers at the International Sweet Shoppe, Silver Creek Computers and Walmart (Overland) in Boise for their friendship over the years. Thanks also to the staffs at St. Alphonsus Regional Medical Center and Elks Rehabilitation Hospital. A wake to celebrate her life will be held on Easter Sunday from 3:30-6:30p.m. at Sacred Heart Church. Mass of Christian Burial and reception will be held on Monday, April 25 at 11a.m. at Sacred Heart Church. Burial at Idaho State Veterans Cemetery to follow. Arrangements are under the direction of the Alden-Waggoner Funeral Chapel. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in Phyllis' memory to the Corpus Christi House at 525 American Boulevard, Boise ID 83702 or http://corpuschristi.wordpress.com/donate/.Published in Idaho Statesman on April 22, 2011

Bio: David Hand, 87, Boise, passed away Thursday, April 24 in a Meridian care facility.Published Idaho Statesman April 26, 2014- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -David HandNovember 30, 1926 - April 24, 2014David Hand, 87, passed away April 24 in Boise. David was born November 30, 1926 at Hollywood Hospital in Los Angeles. Born David Tilman Daley, his father died before his birth. In 1929, his mother, Harriet Murweis Daley, married Arthur Stone Hand. David's brother Carlton (1930) and sister Merilyn (1938) joined the family in La Canada, a small community in the foothills north of Pasadena. Their home at 1250 Journey's End Drive provided sanctuary from the Great Depression and World War II and easy access to the wonders of Southern California. David especially loved the outdoors, including the Mojave Desert, San Gabriel Mountains, and the coast. During WWII, David was rejected for military service due to poor vision. After attending Pasadena Junior (now City) College, he followed in the footsteps of his grandfather and pursued a career as a mining engineer. His first and favorite job was at St. Anthony Mining Co. in Tiger, Arizona. Each day, he went far below ground to the rock mine's many levels, collected ore samples, and returned to the surface for testing. In time, he attended college at the New Mexico School of Mines (now NM Institute of Mining & Technology) in Socorro and the University of Nevada. When the Korean War began, David joined the California National Guard and was called up on September 1, 1950 for basic training at Camp Cooke (now Vandenberg AFB). He attended intelligence analyst training at Fort Riley's Army General School in Kansas, and then deployed for service in Japan and Korea. He was a Master Sergeant when he left Korea in June 1952. After spending that summer in Pony, Montana with "Aunt Leah" Mendenhall, David returned to his studies in Reno. After just a few weeks, he went on a blind date with Phyllis Carpenter. By Thanksgiving they were engaged and David found himself meeting her family, the Magnuson/Carpenter clan of eastern Nevada. David and Phyllis soon graduated from the University of Nevada together, and married in Ely's Sacred Heart Catholic Church on June 28, 1953. In the decades ahead, he enjoyed many good times between Ely and the Magnuson RanchAfter David completed his Master's degree (Geology) in 1955, the family lived near Ely while David worked at Consolidated Copper Mines. They later lived in Maple, Ontario and Montpelier, Idaho as David established his career and their family grew. David loved both the outdoors and his chosen profession. While employed in Canada, he traveled throughout the remote parts of every province, exploring and evaluating mine sites from Newfoundland to the Yukon. After a 1959 accident, David's vision declined rapidly, and by 1964 he was declared legally blind and was unable to continue his geology work. At that moment, with five young children and officially "disabled," David did not despair. Instead, the Hands bought a family business in Idaho Falls, Idaho. Their six children grew up at the Falls View Motel, and many of their best friendships were formed during the next decade. Phyllis and David moved to Boise in 1975; except from 1979-81, David lived the rest of his life in Boise. In Boise, David served as the association executive and lobbyist for the Idaho Innkeepers and Restaurant & Beverage Associations. His temperament and perseverance at legislative sessions earned him a reputation as a principled, hard-working and effective lobbyist. Phyllis and their children were his drivers and office support staff. After a short return to Idaho Falls, David and Phyllis unexpectedly came to Boise in 1981 and cared for Karen after a cancer diagnosis. They bought the International Sweet Shoppe and David soon returned to the hospitality associations. David's personality perfectly suited the hospitality industry. He took his customers' needs seriously and they became his friends; his smile was expansive and contagious; he worked hard and engaged with his community. Since his death, the word "gentleman" has been used to describe David by those who knew him best. People were happy to have David as a friend. He was a member of the Montpelier Lions Club, Idaho Falls Rotary Club, Idaho Falls Chamber of Commerce, the Blinded Veterans Association and numerous other organizations. David led by example and brought energy to his community. Even late in life, David continued his service, which included twelve years on the Idaho Commission for the Blind (including four years as chair), where he advocated for needs of the legally blind and always encouraged others. As he wrote soon after his appointment:"Remember, you are not alone as you go forward with altered vision. Others have walked that path before. There are organizations for the blind.
