James Vessie Carpenter Sr. owned a small "farm" located in Montdale. It was near the intersection of Route 632 (the Old Carbondale Highway) and Green Grove Road. It was directly across the street from the Green Grove Grange. The land that he owned was very extensive and part of it was developed into a 9 hole golf course (called Nine Flags as of 1997). James was a short man. It was said that he was born prematurely. His wife, Florence, was also very short. When I (Brian Sr.) was young, James had a basset hound named Buddy. James liked to hunt, smoked a pipe, and had a sweet tooth. He really enjoyed it when people would give them gifts of fancy chocolates. When I was a kid he would always have pink mints, called Canada Mints, in his pocket and he would always share them with me. In his later years he wore hearing aids which would frequently squeel and cause him to curse them. He also wore glasses. We (Willard, Jeanne, and the kids) would visit them every Sunday. Quite honestly, I didn't care for these planned Sunday visits as they were much too stiff and boring. I much preferred it when my Mom and I would go up there unplanned. When James Carpenter retired, he would frequently go to Florida in the winter months. He would talk about how he would put his car on cruise control and set a blazing pace. In his later years, these tales of high speed trips to Florida were a source of some amusement, since he wore both hearing aids and glasses. He kept a small corn field on one side of his property and grew vegetables in a plot between the house and barn. He would frequently stop by our house to deliver corn and other vegetables. He liked to take walks around the golf course that was created on the land that he owned. Frequently, these walks would go up to where he had a well dug for his water supply, where he would sometimes take off the top and inspect the water level. When I (Brian Sr.) was a very small child, there used to be a chicken coop on the hill beyond the field-stone fence. He used to also take his trash to a large pit that he had up in the woods. He would use his farm tractor to transport it. The part of the golf course that was nearest the house had a pond which served as a water hazard just after the tee. As a kid, I would go up there to watch the frogs which made this pond their home. In the winter, he used to tap the trees in front of his home to collect the syrup. On one side of the house there were apple trees which provided many apples during the summer. When he was older he developed trouble with his intestine, which ultimately required surgery (at the Mid-Valley Hospital) to remove a section of it. He became very thin after the operation, but ultimately put on somewhat of a gut from weakened stomach muscles and oversnacking on candy upon his recuperation. After the death of Florence he began seeing a woman named Jan. I was told that when he was younger, that he had a very sharp temper. But by the time that I knew him he was a very sweet and patient grandfather. His death was caused by lung cancer. For many years he suffered from "black lung" which was a disease that coal miners suffered, caused by inhaling coal dust. It was very common for miners to die from this ailment. For many years he would frequently sleep upright in a recliner chair in order to breathe properly. When he learned of the lung cancer, he decided to not have any operation and to instead let nature take it's course. He spent a long period in the hospital. I had just purchased my first home and remember showing him pictures of it. He seemed so genuinely happy to see it. Towards the end of his life there was a visible lump in his chest/throat area. I (Brian Sr) was with him when he died. It seemed clear that the doctor gave him an overdose of pain killer via an injection to end his suffering, because almost immediately after the injection he eyes lost focus and his breathing became very labored. Soon after, Uncle Jim and Aunt Peggy arrived. When it was clear that he was near death I held his hand and spoke to him. I was surprised when he squeezed my thumb. He squeezed my hand in a way that did not seem reflexive. It seemed very purposeful, squeezing a couple of rythmic times, as though he was acknowledging my presence. He died soon after.

Bill Carpenter Jr.'s records indicate that her middle name was Isabel and that her mother was either Maria Lewis or Mary Morgan. It seems more likely that her middle name was indeed Eleanor, and it is clear that her mother was Maria Lewis.
Florence was a very short woman with brown eyes. In her later years she developed a dowager's hump which made her stoop over. She liked to bake. There seemingly were always Welsh cookies available at her house. She also canned fruits and vegetables. The cellar in their house was always full of shelves of these canned items. She was an extremely orderly and tidy person. The house was always spotless. She kept a wringer washer and a large ironer long after they were common. The house would always smell liked an old fashioned cooked meal. They used to have fresh buttermilk delivered to the house.

Lacka Co. marraige, vol 190, p.452.Need to check if Lester H. is the Harry Jr. that is found in the Olyphant city directories (Can't be as the date was before his birth).
The Hudson Coal Company employment records indicate that Lester was 5'8" and weighed 145 with light hair and blue eyes.
