WILLIAM BRIGGS KILLED WHEN GUN IS DISCHARGED

Lad 14 Years of Age Living Southwest of City Found Dead Saturday Morning by Friends.

After hours of searching, the body of William Briggs was found in Walter Rothenberger's orchard by Walter Rothenberger and William Gunther at 11 o'clock Saturday morning, where he had fallen the night before, when his gun was accidentally discharged.  Briggs, who was 14 years old, had been killed by the accidental discharge of a shotgun with which he was hunting, the charge tearing into the right side of the abdomen and instantly killing him.

William Briggs was in the habit of going hunting almost every evening about 5 o'clock and after it got dark he often went home or to some neighbor's home.  Friday evening he took his shotgun and told his mother he was going hunting.  He said he had only two shells to shoot.  When he was about a mile and a half from home, he met his brother-in-law, Mr. Tompkins, who asked him where he was going.  William had one rabbit hanging on his side and told his brother-in-law that he had only one shell left and thought he could get a rabbit on the way home.  William left his brother-in-law and went down the road and was gone about fifteen minutes when Mr. Tompkins heard a shot, and said to his wife, "Well, I guess William got his rabbit."

When  it got dark and William did not come home his parents thought he stayed a the home of some of his friends over night.  When he did not return in the morning his parents and friends started to search for him.  William was in the habit of taking his gun by the muzzle to poke in brush piles to scare out rabbits.  He would take the barrel of the gun and poke at the brush with the butt end of the gun.  It was supposed that when he was poking at the brush the hammer of the gun caught and discharged.  The family home is near the old county poor farm, 8 miles from Leavenworth.

He is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Marshall Briggs, five brothers, Earl, who is at Camp Funston, Walter, Frederick, Edward and Raymond, who are all at home.  He is also survived by three sisters, Mrs. Ina Cain of Kansas City, Mo., and Mrs. Vera Tompkins of Rosedale, Kan., and Miss Dottie, who is at home.  The funeral will probably be Monday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the Davis chapel.

From The Leavenworth Post, Sunday, October 20, 1918.

Sergeant Carpenter was a member of the 5th Special Forces Group. On March 6, 1967, he was a member of a company size team that infiltrated into southern Savannakhet Province, Laos. Upon contact with the enemy he was mortally wounded while rendering assistance to his wounded comrades. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.

Carpenter was fatally wounded as he attempted to assist other personnel who had been wounded.

Carpenter's remains were recovered by another teammember & it was determined he had died from the wounds received during the firefight.

Because of enemy pressure in the area, the company was forced to leave Carpenter's remains behind as they sought a more secure position.

Sergeant Howard B. Carpenter, who joined the U.S. Army from Ohio, served with the Command and Control Detachment, Headquarters Company, 5th Special Forces Group. On March 5, 1967, he was a member of a Special Forces team aboard a CH-46 Chinook (tail number unknown) that crashed while attempting to insert the team in Laos. No one was killed or seriously injured in the crash, and the Special Forces team and helicopter crew established a defensive perimeter around the crash site. The next morning, they were attacked by an enemy force of unknown size. While attempting to recover wounded members of his group, SGT Carpenter was killed by enemy gunfire. His comrades covered his body with a poncho and hid it near the crash site in the vicinity of (GC) YD 180 036. The remainder of the Special Forces team and the helicopter crew were eventually rescued, but were unable to recover SGT Carpenter's body at that time. Hostile presence in the area prevented further searches for SGT Carpenter's remains, and subsequent attempts to locate them have been unsuccessful. Today, Sergeant Carpenter is memorialized on the Courts of the Missing at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific.  His name is also inscribed along with all his fallen comrades on the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall in Washington, DC.

Based on all information available, DPAA assessed the individual's case to be in the analytical category of Active Pursuit.

Marjorie Ollie Bergener

NAME:
Bruce Carpenter report his mothe was Marjorie Ollie Bergner.  Ollie was her middle name and not a nickname.

BIRTH:
Daughter of William and Della (Bergener) Klee
SOURCE: Obituary of sister Virginia Klee Griffith (1920-2013)
But ...
COMMENT:
Statement made by Bruce Carpenter Bruce.Carpenter@earthlink.net regarding his mother.
Via email dated: 18 July 2024.
On the screenshot you list my mother as Marjorie B. Klee.  That is NOT CORRECT.
Her name was Marjorie Ollie Bergener.  She never used Klee although she lived with, and was raised by, her sister Della Klee following her mothers death.  Her mother Wilhelmina (Minnie) Peterman Bergener (b. 9 Feb 1867 NY) died 14 Apr 1919 in Ross, Alleghany County, PA, a victim of the plague or Spanish Flu of 1918.  My mother was 5 years of age at that time and following the death of her mother she lived with and was raised by her older sister, Della Klee on Allan Place in Ross Township PA.  (suburb of Pittsburgh).  She always referenced her sister as “mother” until the sisters death in 1962.
The 1920 federal census has my mother incorrectly listed as Marjorie Klee.  I assume that the census taker heard my mother call Della Klee “mother” and assumed her last name was Klee.
What you have also lists my mothers parents as having separated.  That is not accurate.  They were together until Wilhelmina died in 1918. Her father (Charles A Bergener) died in 1936.  I have all of that documented including news paper coverage of the auto accident and his death.
My parents (Joseph and Marjorie) are listed as having been married in Pittsburgh PA.  That is not correct.  They were married in Hamilton County OHIO.  I have the marriage certificate.
MORE:
Bruce Carpenter reports, " In fact I don’t know where she was born as the PA State Archives in New Castle does not seem to have a birth record for her."  I "Agree that she was born in PA and everything I see indicates Pittsburgh." But still no documentaton found.
She was of an early age of or from,of, Pittsburgh, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania.

CENSUS: 1920 US Census - with sister - age 7 b. PA - listed as a daughter Klee - I add the entry here because of this.

Marjorie Ollie Bergener was the daughter of  Wilhelmina "Minnie" (nee Peterman) Bergener who died in April 1918, a victim of the Spanish Flu of 1918, when she 5 years old.  Her father, Charles A. Bergener died in 1936 due to an auto accident.
Marjorie was raised by her older sister, Della Klee on Allan Place in Ross Township PA, a suburb of Pittsburgh.  She always referenced her sister as "mother" until the sisters death in 1962. This is seen in the 1920 Federal and 1925 State Census where she is listed as a "Klee."
