Death: May 10, 2017
New Port Richey
Pasco County
Florida, USA
Stuart Russell Owlett of New Port Richey, Florida passed away on May 10, 2017 at age 88. Mr. Owlett was born on May 14, 1928 and spent the first 50 years of his life in Tioga County, Pa. He and his father Ben owned and operated Owlett’s General Store in Keeneyville. It was the hub of commerce in rural Middlebury Township. The store originally sold everything from groceries to boots and wall paper. In later years when Mr. Owlett was the sole owner it became a busy super market attracting customers from Wellsboro to Elkland.
Mr. Owlett and Betty, his wife of 70 years, retired to Florida in 1980 where they both embarked on a 35 year plus career as mutual cashiers at Tampa Bay Downs race track. In their spare time, Stuart and Betty were tireless travelers, visiting nearly every country in the world. Their journeys to exotic places like Africa, the old Soviet Union, Australia, and the Far East were certainly a long way from Keeneyville, Pa. Mr. Owlett took particular pleasure in sharing his travel experiences with civic groups and school classes.
A member of the Shortsville Baptist Church and Suncoast Baptist church, Mr. Owlett is survived by his wife Betty Peake Owlett, two children and their spouses --Cheryl Owlett Ross and husband Steve and David Owlett and his wife Betty. Mr. Owlett had four grandchildren--Todd Hanville, Kim Hanville Ford, Matthew Hanville, and Jaimee Stansell. There are also nine great grandchildren and three great great-grandchildren. In addition, Mr. Owlett is survived by sister, Judy Cruttenden and brother Lynn Owlett.
The services for Stuart Owlett will be held at Tussey-Mosher Funeral Home, 139 Main St., Wellsboro, on Monday May 15 at 2:00 PM, with Pastor Jeremy Stansell officiating. Visitation will be held from 12-2 PM, prior to the service. MARRIAGE: Marriage certificates for marriages to Kunigunda and Betty.
Please note that Richard and Kunigunda were married several times. They used the 6 Feb 1950 marriage date.
Their first marriage was an elopement to Switzerland with a short honeymoon to Paris where the French were very rude to them. Sadly neither the American Military nor the German government accepted that marriage. This per Dick and Gunda and the reason why they use 6 Feb 1950 as their marriage date.
Later they were married civilly (6 Feb 1954) by the German Government, then a brief Church Wedding by an American Military Chaplain for US Military purposes. The only pictures were from the civil marriage.
Gunda's 1961/1962 Petition for Naturalization has their marriage date of "Feb. 6, 1954." at Bamberg.

MILITARY: RICHARD was a soldier from the World War 2 era through the end of the Vietnam conflict.  He started as a private and ended his career as a Major.
He was known as a "Mustang."  This is a soldier who starts out in the enlisted ranks and becomes an officer.  He received a battlefield commission (16 July 1953) in Korea to Second lieutenant when he was an acting Sergeant with the ROK (Republic of Korea) Capitol Division during the Korean War.  He gave up his reserve commission to second lieutenant after the cessation of hostilities and returned to his family in Germany as an enlisted soldier. His specialty early in his career was weapons then later in supply and logistics. He also spent many years working with foreign troops (part of which was with the U.S. Army Special Forces).

RICHARD was a ship welder during World War 2 and joined the Army as a private at the end.  He was a member of the occupation forces in Germany and served as a guard during a portion of the Nuremburg Trials. During his second enlistment, he married a German National and had several children.  He served in Korea during that conflict with the ROK (Korean military) 2nd Battalion of the 26th Infantry Regiment of the Capital Division.  Near the end of that conflict his unit was cut off and he took command receiving a battle field commission over the radio. He was there testing battlefield radar which was then considered Top Secret.

Corporal Carpenter, then acting Sergeant, promoted to 2nd Lieutenant received no medal or recognition for his actions  and held out about a week until his command was relieved.  When posted back to Germany he reverted back to his regular rank of corporal.

He assisted in transporting refugees from the north of Vietnam at the beginning of the division of that country.  This included excursions into the interior recovering lend lease equipment. He spent time training irregular forces against communist aggression in South-East Asia.  He also trained regular U.S. troops at Fort Ord, CA, during their basic training as an enlisted man.  As an officer he continued training troops at Fort Jackson, SC.  He was posted back to Germany in 1964 where he retired from twenty years active duty and moved to San Diego, CA in late 1965.
He continued his military involvement by joining a Special Forces Reserve unit until 1987. He was recalled to active duty several times during this period. He also did contract work with the CIA.  His retirement includes a disability award for combat injuries.

COUNTY:
Dick worked for a year with the San Diego County Department of Social Services.  He then worked for the Department of Honor Camps until it was grandfathered into the Probation Department in the mid 1970s.  With the Honor Camps he was a Assistant Superintendent equal to a Assistant Director. His rank was down graded to a Supervising Probation Officer (SPO), but retained the higher pay rate.  He was the highest paid supervisor during his tenure with the Probation Department.  An example of his work, he took a minor department called Work Projects and developed it into a million dollar revenue generator for the County of San Diego.  The Board of Supervisors called him Mr. Work Projects and this was echoed in the newspaper and television.  The Probation Department replaced his position with a Director and two SPOs when he got ready to retire.  He retired from the San Diego County Probation Department in 1992 with 26 years of County work.

Served in Korea from April to August 1953 with the ROK Capital Div, 26 ROK Inf Reg, 2nd Batt - At one point he was temp assigned to the US 7th Inf Div, HQ Company, Prov AA Batt before going on line with the ROKs.

SPECIAL FORCES & CIA WORK:
My father worked with DP (displaced person) battalions in 1947-1948 primarily during the Berlin airlift. He helped train the new German army and even Greek troops in Europe to about 1950. In 1953 he was with ROK troops and saw combat with them. In 1954 he worked recovering French lend-leased military supplies from the New North Vietnam during the French withdrawal. He also supplied cover and backup for the CIA inserting agents into the north.

He was fluent in German, and had a smattering of several different languages. His military specialties as an enlisted man was individual and crew served weapons. As an officer he specialized in supply and logistics. He was a training DI as an NCO and as an Officer. He was also airborne qualified.

His work with training US and foreign troops, his multiple military skills and languages qualified him for consideration and work with the US Army Special Forces.

The first SF work he did was for the 10th Special Forces was during the October 1956 Hungarian revolt. He helped set up a supply base and trained Hungarians on individual and crew weapons. While he was not then in Special Forces, he says this was his first real exposure working with them.

In 1959-1960, as an officer, he was stationed in South Korea and liaisoned with both US & Korean Special Forces for the unit he was with.

In 1960-1961 he went through the Special Warfare school at Fort Bragg, North Carolina before going back to South-east Asia. In 1961, while in north-west Laos, he was wounded by white phosphorous explosion and was unconscious for about 3-4 days. He has those burn scars to this day on his legs.

Note: He was not with the SF Mobile Training Teams that Laos in 1961. The CIA used that group as a cover going into Northeast Burma to meet the remains of the National Chinese 3rd Kuomintang Army. The 3rd KMT Army retreated to that area after the 1948/1949 communist takeover of China. The 3rd KMT Army took over control of the border region there and became known as the warlords. The CIA group my father was with made the first contact and arrangements with the warlords there to help guard against Chinese communist take over. The US would pour in several million dollars in military aide over the next decade to these warlords. Even after the later socialist dictatorship of Burma, this region stayed semi-autonomous.

He then trained new troops before going to back to Europe in early 1964 in a S4 or supply billet.

In late 1965, my father's association with the Special Forces and the CIA changed. The regular army wanted to send him to South Vietnam as a supply specialist. The Special Forces also wanted him full time (as an instructor?), but the CIA won out. My father went into the 12th Special Forces Group (Airborne) B team reserve billet in 1966. While he cross trained with A teams, his B team assignment allowed more flexibility for other work.

From 1966 to 1987 my father, while working for the County of San Diego, also worked with the CIA and the SF. His assignments were normally from 3 to 9 months. He was recalled several times to active duty for longer assignments and would leave and return wearing his SF uniform. The varied assignments took him from SE Asia, the isles of the Pacific, South America, Africa and Europe. He was a guest teacher at the Special Warfare school at Fort Bragg, and possibly the CIA training Farm in Langley Virginia. He admits being there but has never said what he actually did!

His last assignment was in southern Nicaragua and he was there when Colonel Ollie North told the world about the CIA supporting the Contras. It took my father and his team about 10 days to make it to the US consulate in Costa Rica with no losses. Much to his dismay the CIA had closed up shop and abandoned them. He threatened to punch Ollie North in the nose, on several occasions, if ever given the chance.

My father retired after 41 years of combined service to his Country in 1987. In 1992, he retired from the County of San Diego. To this day, most people he worked with in the County had no clue of his CIA work. And that was the way it should have been.

"Dick" was a US Army soldier who started as a private in Germany during the occupation and ended his career as a Major. He was a "Double Mustang" or enlisted soldier who became an officer. In his case twice.
He received a battlefield commission on 16 July 1953 while in Korea to Second lieutenant, while he was an acting Sergeant. He was serving in Korea with the ROK (Republic of Korea) 2nd Battalion of the ROK 26th Infantry "White Tigers" Regiment during the battle of the Kumsong River Salient during the Korean War. The Americans referred to themselves as "The Lost Bastards." His detachment and the ROKs on Hill 433 were surrounded by enemy forces on the night of 13-14 July 1953 and were not relieved until 20 July. One half of the 28 Americans were Killed in Action and only about 105 ROKs walked off Hill 433.
He gave up his reserve officer's commission on 16 August 1953 after the cessation of hostilities and returned to his family in Germany as an enlisted soldier. His specialty early in his career was crew served weapons. He became an officer again in 1959 after attending OCS and became an expert in supply and logistics.
His military work included training American and foreign troops. He spent time with the U.S. Army Special Forces and with the Central Intelligence Agency special operations during active duty and while serving in the reserves. He served a second career with the County of San Diego Probation Department.

MISC:
Random memories include:
My father said more than once to me that there was no free or easy way in life. Everything is earned the hard way and short cuts will cause people to take advantage of you. And I had a choice to make, spit in one hand or wish in the other. Often all he had to say to me was Spit in one hand or ...
Other phrases I remember include:
Life is difficult, learn to deal with it.
You’re making a mountain out of a molehill.
Shit plus anything is still shit. Shit plus 6 is still shit. Apparently the number was a reference of how deep the shit he thought he was in!
Other random memories of him include:
Stinker - used for John then Rich when a child. Rich kept it since he was the youngest.
Dad gave us parachute jumping lessons from the back yard picnic table.
Dad would give us rides on his legs straight up in the air so we could be like birds. He crossed his legs while sitting and giving rides while we sat on his foot.
Airplane rides (being held by the hand and foot) and twirled around by Dad ...
Riding the crossed leg foot up and down ...
Being held then having a controlled toss onto the bed ...

NOTE:
GUNDA died at her home, (6235 Twin Lake Dr. in La Mesa, CA 91942), after a lengthy hospital stay, due to complications of emphysema.  This disease probably had its roots in World War Two from the Allied bombing raids on the rail yards in Bamberg (asbestos type of materials burning?), her past tuberculosis, and over thirty years of smoking. She did not want to die in the hospital and spent her last few days on earth in her home surrounded by fond memories and knick knacks of Bamberg, Germany.

GUNDA was born and raised in Bamberg, Germany.  During the war years she assisted on farms outside that city. As a young girl she was of dark complexion with long raven black hair and standing about five foot one. She was affectionately known before the occupation as the "kliene nigrae" or little black one.  She barely weighed 80 pounds at the end of the war compared to her normal weight of 95 pounds.

One story that stands out showing her resolve and determination is set in 1945.  As any young adult, she wanted to help her country.  As the American forces advanced on Bamberg many of the bridges were blown up.  Unfortunately, this left many Wermacht (German) troops stranded on the wrong side of the river.  Young KUNIGUNDA resolved by herself to bring some supplies to them.

She found a row boat and pulled it into the cold water of the Regnitz River and began loading some supplies into it.  One of the last items was a panzerfaust, which was an anti-tank weapon weighing about 10.5 pounds.  By this time the Americans had taken notice of her across the river.  They were about one to two hundred yards away and could not tell that she was a female because of the pants she wore and that her hair was piled into a german field cap.  They began shooting but she was able to get the panzerfaust into the boat. As she turned to pick up something a volley of shots forced her to duck and in the process she lost her hat.  The Americans suddenly realized that she was a female and stopped shooting.  They then began to shoot the row boat.

KUNIGUNDA began cursing and taunting the Americans as she stood helplessly by and watched her row boat quickly sink into the river.  Infuriated she began throwing rocks but quickly stopped when she heard laughter across the river and realized that her rocks were woefully short.

What is a panzerfaust? The early versions were about 9.5 pounds and the later war versions up to about 20 pounds. They were one shot anti-tank weapons. I guessed hers was about 10.5 pounds each but it was obvious they ranged in size. See: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Panzerfaust

NICKNAME:
Die kleine Negeria
One of my mother’s nicknames when she was growing up during the 1930s in Bamberg Germany was Die kleine Negeria (Nig-ray). In Sud Deutsch, aka Bavarian or Southern German, this referred to the (Die, pronounced Dee in the feminine sense) little Negro. In more proper or High German she would be referred to as Die kleine Negermädchen.
My mother was Kunigunda (Gunda) Schuhlein (22 Jan 1929 - 16 Mar 1990) was the daughter of Johann Schuhlein (18 Apr 1893 - 27 Dec 1933) and Eugenie Amalie Jenieve Bauer (6 Nov 1894 - 25 Jun 1963). Her father was a World War I German soldier who had been gassed and wounded that impacted the rest of his life. His early death at age 40 left my mother and eight siblings destitute.
How destitute? Her grandfather would take young Kunigunda around the beer halls to empty ash trays into a bucket. Occasionally she would receive a pfennig or two for her efforts and an occasional smack from a drunk. A pfennig is a German penny. This was at a time when it cost about an American nickel ($0.05) to buy a loaf of bread. The same loaf of bread in Germany would cost anywhere from 75 to 100 pfennings. One hundred pfennings was one (1) Deutsch Mark (German Dollar) in the early 1930s Germany was still in a far worse depression than the American Great Depression.
Her grandfather and she would sort through the bucket to pull out the bits of tobacco and cigarette papers to recycle. She came very adept with her small hands picking out the shreds of tobacco. Her grandfather would then hand make cigarettes to resell. She was proud that she could provide something to support her family.

As the NAZIs - the National Socialist Workers Party came to power, all German youth were required to attend school. All but those undesirables like Jews, homosexuals and mixed race individuals. It became vitally important to hide any non-Aryan heritage like having a Romano or gypsy background to survive in such an environment. But within the family, she was still teased using her nick name.
To all German youth they were taught they were the master race and that a pure German bloodline was of the most importance next to loyalty to Der Fuherer (the male leader of NAZI Germany) Adolf Hitler. When the war started my mother was ten years old. She had a fear of being dragged away like the Jews and any who opposed the NAZI regime. By the time she was a teenager, many German youth were sent to the farms to work and she constantly covered up because she tanned so easily. She often over compensated to prove her German-ness.
When the war came to a close, American forces entered Bamberg with every German house and apartment showing white sheets of surrender. And the first Americans soldiers were African-Americans or Negro troops, and her relatives of course teased her no end.
My mother was shoved over to the basement window and saw her very first negro. She thought he was huge and well over seven feet tall. His skin was dark black, with a large nose and thick lips. He was chewing a large wad of black something which he spat at the basement window when he saw her looking at him. Then he smiled at her with yellow black stained teeth.
In astonishment she sank wide eyed to the floor. She then heard one of her relatives tell her that he recognized her as one of them. And in horror, she fled and hid when told that the American Negro would be coming back for her. She said she hid for weeks refusing to leave the apartment, because she was afraid of being kidnapped or mistaken as a Negro.
Apparently teasing is universal and often cruel.

Random memories of her include:
I remember Momma fixing bachus (sp?) and Dad would eat most of them soon as they came out of the pan. It took a long time to fix enough to put on a plate, so we put them in the oven after they came out of the pan to hide them.
I remember:
* Saturdays were grocery shopping at the commissary with mom, coming home and watching Tarzan and eating pizza. Mama’s pizza!.
* John is always wearing Army fatigues (made by mom) so he could look like dad. Later Rich got them. * standing on her head‘s against the wall, mom was always the best.
* Mom pulled out the kitchen drawer looking for a wooden spoon and a dryer fell on her foot and she went around the house chasing John, she was really mad. The rest of us went in and hid.

Pizza, Mom style! I remember when those baking pans were showing holes where they had been cut so many times. Her secret ingredient was that number 10 can (old coffee can) of bacon and sausage grease that sat by the stove. That made the crust the best tasting ever!

With her slightly crooked first finger telling us sternly with her German accent, “Stoop!” (stop).   And the very quiet and scary, “Wait until your father gets home.”

The potato pancakes (Kattoffelpuffer) that I remember as Pacus and you as Bachus. I can not find a similar word to those involving potato pancakes. Maybe it was a family used name?  Po from potato and cas from cakes?  Or something similar?  Curious!

Those Pacas/Bachus were fantastic with applesauce and/or even cinnamon sugar!  I even remember making P&B sandwiches out of them! I even took the discarded potato skins and fried them up.

Hi John:
I have so enjoyed the Census information. Shared it with my cousin Jane yesterday and she was very impressed and would love some information about her family.
I do believe in 1940 I was living with some friends while going to school. That must be the time my Mother moved to Huntington Park and took care of the cooking for a restaurant her Sister was running, Jane's Mother.
I graduated from Point Loma in 1943 and moved to Huntington Park for a short time before returning to San Diego. I think I went to work for the Navy (Bureau of Aeronautics Representative) as a teletype operator and then Security. The office was located in the building across from Convair. The third floor was half Army and half Navy checking work that Convair was during. We had engineers in our office that would check the work. All my teletypes went through the 11th Naval District, foot of Broadway.
I had to go there for my typing test when I went to work. I think that building might be long gone.
I married in 1950 and lost my husband in 1969. Stayed single until 1991 when I met your Dad and who would of thought that he would want to marry a woman at 65 years old when he was only 60.
It was a very happy time for me and I was blessed to spend the years we had together.
My Best, Betty

Betty Carpenter Obituary
Obituary published on Legacy.com by Merkley-Mitchell Mortuary on Mar. 16, 2024.
Betty Jane Carpenter, age 97, of San Diego, California passed away on Friday, March 8, 2024.
What a grand lady! Always gracious and loving, she was devoted to family and church. From staunch Swedish stock, she was raised with three brothers and a sister in Ocean Beach where her mother ran a diner on Newport Ave. She graduated Pt. Loma Jr/Sr High and served during WW2 as a civilian employee of the US Navy, commendated by the Admiral for her service.
Betty was smitten by Elmo William Clapper and they married at St. Francis Chapel (Balboa Park) in 1950. The family grew with children Karen (1952) and Scott (1955). Elmo died at 49 yrs in 1969. Without his vision and leadership the family's new venture, Buckboard Acres, an 80 acre recreational ranch, was sold.
In 1975 Betty picked up her skirts and moved to the Kensington area of San Diego. 22 years later she met and married Richard Louis Carpenter. They danced, traveled, and shared a vibrant life until his death in 2013.
Betty is survived by her children, granddaughter Megan Burr, an extended family, and faithful friends Josie, Mary Ellen, and Norma among others.
Services will be graveside in Ramona where she will be reunited with Elmo. Details will follow.
Please consider planting a tree in her memory. In this small way she will live on and nourish generations to come.
