In 1910, William J. Grover built the round barn that stood on Highway 49 between Gold and Newfield. It was built on a design drawn by Theodorus C. Howe. The barn burned to the ground on May 3, 2002. The fire was suspicious and arson was assumed by most. At the time the barn was owned by James Hoopes, a local farmer notorious for having buildings "mysteriously" burn.
