Number 2021 in the Carpenter Memorial on page 267. His family is number 652
in the CM. He was a mechanic and a farmer. He held the office of treasurer of
the town from 1813 to 1818.
BOOK:
A Genealogical History of the Rehoboth Branch of the Carpenter Family in America. The short title is:
The Carpenter Memorial (CM) and was compiled by Amos Bugbee Carpenter, and published in 1898 with about 900 pages.NAME: Several of his his children birth records has him as Wm. Otis Carpenter. It is a typo. It is a misreading of the older style handwriting.
When you look at hand written town record images what looks at what might be considered Mn or m with the second letter as superscript. EVERY single father has this mark before his first name and surname.
Some have claimed that this is the abbreviation for William (Wm.). But entire pages of fathers first named William? No. The mark is older style mark for Master and not William. Example: See image and compare the same mark with other father names at:
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3QS7-9979-M9FC-G?i=34&wc=Q4DW-92J%3A353350701%2C353584701%2C353584702%3Fcc%3D2061550&cc=2061550 - Go a few pages either way and you will see this mark is very consistent.NOTE: The CM has the wrong birth date given! It has 31 Dec 1769 which is for Obes Carpenter who died as a child. Otis was baptized 23 Jun 1776.

The following submitted by Robin Oneill 29 Jul 13 rrhx@yahoo.com
...
Ezra Carpenter (1770-1821) and his wife Mary Follett (1770-1846) are my 4th great-grandparents. Their daughter Tryphena (29 July 1800-24 August 1887) and her husband Thomas Comstock (c1796-21 November 1863) are my weak links in my Mayflower Society application and several D. A. R. ancestor supplemental applications. I am in the process of restoring Artemus Comstock’s journals (1848-1888) which established the date of his mother’s birth. Artemus died in South Dakota in 1882 and there is no mention of his mother’s parents in her obituary or death register. The reviewer for my Mayflower application is asking for a stronger link or several links for Tryphena as the daughter of Ezra Carpenter besides the baptismal record already accepted for her sister Eliza (Carpenter) Westgate. Mary, Eliza, Rhoda, Tryphena and Ezra, Jr. were all baptized on 17 April 1803 as children of Ezra and Mary Carpenter.
Before submitting my application, I had the Mayflower Society reconfirm the acceptability of Eliza (Carpenter) Westgate’s lineage report.
I have found a letter of administration for Ezra’s estate, but no inventory was ever filed. Tryphena was 21 in 1821 and not listed on the guardianship papers filed for Daniel, Zenas, Shepard, Artemus and Tryphasa. I have not yet found any record of Mary (Follett) Carpenter’s will or probate in Susquehanna County. Ezra brother, John Carpenter died in 1838. I have just started working with local researchers to locate a marriage record for Tryphena and Thomas Comstock circa 1821.
I have a local history from 1878 for Niagara County, NY. The Village of Pekin - Cambria Churches, page 233. "Thomas Comstock located on the Pekin road, one mile west of the railroad junction, in 1822, purchasing one hundred acres of the Holland Company. He moved from Susquehanna with an ox team. His son Artemus W. Comstock owns the original homestead. The Comstock cheese factory was established on the farm as a private enterprise, in 1848. It has been and continues popular for the best quality of cheese manufactured, meeting a ready sale."

“Account Book of John Carpenter, One of Nine Harford Partners, Recovered in Second-Hand Book Store in Wilkes-Barre.
Harford, Pa.-Although the discovery of account books of early settlers in Pennsylvania is not unusual, the recent finding of such a book kept by one of the Nine Partners who founded this town in 1790, has greatly stimulated interest in the Harford Sesqui-Centennial celebration to be held her July 3 and 4………….
……The finder sold it to a Binghamton, N. Y., attorney who, realizing its value, placed it in the hands of G. R. Carpenter, of New York, a descendant of one of the Harford pioneers……
The little book measures four by six inches and was apparently purchase by John Carpenter March 24, 1821 for the purpose of keeping his accounts as administrator of the estate of his brother, Ezra, who settle in Harford in 1795 and died in the nearby town of Herrick [sic Clifford], Feb. 27, 1821…..John found that a few pages sufficed for the estate records, and so he devoted the remainder of the book to entries of his dealings with neighbors.”GRAVE: image
