Bio:
Thomas Asbury McSwain was the son of  Charles McSwain and his second wife, Sarah Lucinda Throckmorton. Charles McSwain was the son of  David McSwain and his first wife, Catherine Robertson. David McSwain was a Revolutionary War soldier. The DAR designated him as "DAR Ancestor Number A076503".

Charles McSwain had been married first to Luraner Washburn. They had a large family with at least fifteen children. Shortly after her death in 1847, McSwain married Ms. Throckmorton, daughter of Thomas and  Rosanna Wilkinson Throckmorton.

Their only child, Thomas Asbury McSwain, was born on November 8, 1848. Charles McSwain died on December 19, 1848.

In 1853, the widow McSwain married widower William Riley Upchurch,  the son of Howell and Elizabeth Dudney Upchurch. On May 7, 1846, he had married Sarah Randall with whom he had a son, Osborne Howell Upchurch. Two days before Christmas 1852, his first wife died.

Sarah T. M. Upchurch was at least ten years older than her second husband. By him, she had two additional children:  daughters  Tempie Upchurch, who married  Maston C. Blalock, and Lucy Upchurch.

On November 7, 1867, Thomas McSwain married Alice Ann "Aly" Carpenter, the daughter of Shelby Carpenter and Mariah Woodruff. Just as her husband was a descendant of an RW soldier, so was Mrs. McSwain: she was a descendant of Thomas Carpenter, DAR Ancestor Number A019535.
