Notes

35. John Carpenter

NOTE: See father's notes for Gene Zubrinsky's data on this individual.

NOTE: Child listed as John Carpenter who married Ruth Inman has been removed as he is a duplicate to another John Carpenter whose father is Joseph Carpenter. The John Carpenter who married Ruth Inman was b. abt 1738 Pawtuxet, Providence, RI d. 15 Apr 1806 Smithfield,, RI and m. 20 Nov 1763 in Cranston,, RI.  He was the son of Joseph Carpenter b. abt 1690 Pawtuxet,, RI, of Benjamin Carpenter b. abt 1653 Pawtucket,, RI, of William Carpenter b. abt 1610. That John Carpenter resided in Smithfield, RI in 1755." (Joseph Carpenter's father-in-law, Zachariah Rhodes, made his will in 1755. It names grandson John Carpenter but does not indicate that he was then of Smithfield [see NEHGR 114:283])."
That John Carpenter was married twice. First to Ruth Inman in 1763 by Joseph Randall. Second to either Mercy Angell, widow of Daniel Angell on March 12, 1796 (she married 3rd Seth Hunt  after being widowed by John Carpenter) OR Mary Angell widow of Daniel Angell on Feb. 13, 1796.  John and Mary or Mercy has one son.
SEE: "The Epistle", Vol. 6, Number 3, (March 1980).

NOTE:  Gene Zubrinsky wrote regarding this John Carpenter:
"A namesake son, said to have married Ruth Inman, has been attributed to this John Carpenter (see Carpenter [1901] __). There is no record that this man had a son John, however. The man of that name who married Ruth Inman (at Cranston, R.I., 20 Nov. 1763) was born at Pawtuxet, R.I., about 1738 and died at Smithfield, R.I., 15 April 1806, son of Joseph4 (Benjamin3, William2 of Rehoboth) and Elizabeth (Rhodes) Carpenter. For more-complete information about him, see his entry in this database."  See Providence Carpenters.

PER NEW ENGLAND MARRIAGES PRIOR TO 1700: JOHN (1652- ) & 1/WF REBECCA [REDWAY/READAWAY] (1654- ) B 1677; REHOBOTH/SWANSEA/WOODSTOCK, CT.
JOHN (1652- ) & 2/WF SARAH (FULLER) DAY, W RALPH, M/3 SAMUEL WARD/[?WEARE]; AFT
21 OCT 1694; WOODSTOCK, CT.

He moved to Woodstock, Ct about 1690.  He served during King Phillip's War.
He was also in the Narragansett expedition in 1675.  He was made Captain of a
company in the French and Indian War from Woodstock, CT.
He bought land in Woodstock in 1708 and transfered title to his step mother
Miriam in May 1703.  The death date in the AF of 23 May 1695 seems incorrect.
Death date aft 1708 is thus adjusted.
See extensive note on page 51 and 52.

BIRTH: 10 Oct 1652 in one record.

E-MAIL: From Gene Zubrinsky dated 02/04/2002 - excerpt
JOHN4 CARPENTER, born 19 October 1652--also a son of William3 Carpenter but
by his first wife, Priscilla Bennett--had married probably at Rehoboth, by 19
December 1677 (birth date of first child), REBECCA2 REDWAY, with whom he had
10 children, 8 recorded at Rehoboth, 2 at Woodstock (no John among them).
Rebecca's father is invariably identified correctly as JAMES1 REDWAY--though
his date of burial (31 March 1684) is often confused with that of his son
James2 (28 Oct. 1676).  But sloppy research has caused some accounts
(including that on John R. Carpenter's CD) to misidentify James1's wife
(i.e., Rebecca's mother) as MARY WHIPPLE.  The facts are these: Mary Whipple
married at Rehoboth, 14 April 1748, as his second wife, CAPT. JAMES3 REDWAY (
John2, James1) (orig. Rehoboth VR, 2:266); the identity of James1 Redway's
wife is unknown.

Rebecca Redway

Old Notes:
REBECCA REDWAY/READAWAY MARRIED A CAREPENTER,JOHN (1652-); b 1677; REHOBOTH/SWANSEA/WOODSTOCK, CT. . . . PER PAGE 135 OF NEW ENGLAND MARRIAGES PRIOR TO 1700.

BIRTH: Rehoboth VR give Rebecca's birth date as the "middle" of February 1654. The 3 April 1657 birth date belongs to John4's brother William's wife, Elizabeth Robinson. GZ

Gene Zubrinsky of Ojai, CA wrote:

SAMUEL3 and ABIAH3 CARPENTER, sons of William2 and Abigail (Briant) Carpenter, also married daughters of James1 Redway: Samuel m. 25 May 1660, SARAH REDWAY, and Abiah m. say 1667, MARY REDWAY. As above, the identity of the Redway sisters' mother is unknown.

WILL:
Will reportedly dated 10 Apr 1718/1719 with a Codicil added 17 April 1725/1726.
NOTE:
Before 1751, the calendar year did not end on 31 December. It ended on 25 March. Then in 1751 the calendar changed and the end of the year became 31 December.  For those years prior the months of Jan, Feb and March recorded the year not yet ended. This means we need to acknowledge this by the dual date year.  The record might say 10 April 1718 but but in translation it is now in 1719.  See:  http://libguides.ctstatelibrary.org/hg/colonialresearch/calendar

DEATH:
After 17 Apr 1725/1726 and before probate in August 1726.

BURIAL:
It is believed that she was buried near her husband in the Newell Burying Grounds. But it appears a marker was never placed on her grave.

While the left side of the page is hard to read, I find NO CARPENTERS listed for 1692 births. The day and months are pretty much not visible on the left side. But the right side - where the surname of parents are - are more readable.
I believe this is a bogus entry and not verifiable.  But see next.

Per image 434 of 1318 the probate inventory was completed 25 May 1789. On the next image a schedule hearing is for 1 Nov 1789. The estate papers and bond was reviewed on 1 Sept 1789 in Hebron.
I do not see the date 21 Aug 1789 mentioned any where on the images. And some people claim she died on this date despite that the inventory of her estate was finished on 25 May 1789!
Normally Probate is started about a month after death. This means it is likely she died sometime in or about late April 1789.
The Court was located in Heron, Hartford County, CT. And probate is usually done in the county of death.
This means she likely did not die in Coventry, Tolland County, CT.   JRC

NOTE: See father's notes for Gene Zubrinsky's data on this individual.

The last day of the month was 29 Feb 1727 is correct because it was after 1 Jan but before 25 March because while only 1728 was the leap year (Jan to Dec) for the Gregorian calendar, the year (1727) did not change until 25 March for the people at that time using the Julian calendar. Thus making 29 Feb still in 1727 on the last day of the month of February. Thus comparing the old style 29 Feb 1727 to the current calendar as 29 Feb 1728 new style. Josiah died at age 63 years, 22 months and 11 days in his 64th year of life.
Gene Zubrinsky writes the follow for his birth and death; JOSIAH CARPENTER, b. 18 Dec. 1664, d. Rehoboth 28 or 29 Feb. 1727/8 [leap year], in 64th yr.; ...

JOSIAH (1664-1728) & ELIZABETH READ (1669-1739); 24 NOV 1692, 24 MAY 1692; REHOBOTH. PER NEW ENGLAND MARRIAGES PRIOR TO 1700.

MARRIAGE: Gene Zubrinsky indicates that the marriage date given above "24 May 1692" is incorrect and should be "24 Nov 1692."

page 66.

Subject: Carpenter info. ?
I am looking for information on an Elizabeth Carpenter born in 1699, Rehoboth, MA to the parents, Josiah and Elizabeth Read Carpenter.  Elizabeth Carpenter married Israel Peck in 1727, they moved to Barrington, RI, she died some time prior to 1746.  Which is when Israel (widow) married Elizabeth Hunt.  Any information on Elizabeth Carpenter and her children would be greatly appreciated.  ... Tami Peck

193. Mary Carpenter

Number 135 in the Carpenter Memorial on page 66.
She is not listed in the AF, nor born in Rehoboth, which might mean she was
adopted.  No mention of this in the Carpenter Memorial.
There is another Mary Carpenter listed in the CM with the same birth date!
SEE: Number 469 in the Carpenter Memorial on page 99.

40. Nathaniel Carpenter

NOTE: See father's notes for Gene Zubrinsky's data on this individual.

DEATH: Often given as 28 Feb 1727 per the AF. However it is for another. His death is actually unknown but estimated about 1741/1743 since he was reported alive in 1740.Use of "aft 1740" is used.

MARRIAGE:  Many records in error have marriage as 13 Oct 1695.  As Gene Zubrinsky writes: "Mary Preston, 2nd wife of Nathaniel4: Married 13 10th month [Dec (not Oct)] 1695."  Remember the difference in the old calendar verses new?
Example: Per Marriage Records Before 1699, page 54: Nathaniel married Mary Preston, 13 Oct. 1695, Dorchester, MA

page 67 (Number 22).
He was elected town representative in 1724, 1729, 1733, and 1735, serving the
town as their represenative for four year terms.
He made a will in 1740 or 1741.  The will does not appear to be probated, but
is signed and sealed in the regular form.  He mentions in his will, his son,
Ezekiel Carpenter, in addiition to what he had given him, "all his rights in
Wrentham, etc."  He gives to his son, Ezra real estate, money and other minor
articles herein mentioned: Namely his square barrel gun, great andirons, iron
peal; also his best hat, great coat, three fine shirts, and his great silver
shoe buckles.
He gives to his daughter, Rachel Kent, in addition to what he
had given her, land and money, and various other articles: namely his negro
boy, named Dick; two beds and bedsteads, with furniture belonging to them; one
of the beds he then occupied; the other bed stood in the chamber with calico
curtains and quilt belonging to it; one half the sheets the largest portion of
his late wife's linen and wearing apparal, wool, kettles et cetera and a pair
of horse chains and a cow.  For a complete listing see page 53.
He gives to his son, Dan, land and money.  He also gives him a right and a half
in the Town of Ashford, CT and appoints him executor.

We also find that he gave to the first church in Rehoboth, a good tanker
(tankard) and another tanker to the church of Attleboro to be purchased out of
his estate.

NAME: Daniel Wheaton Carpenter in one record.

NOTE:
He was chosen town clerk on the death of his father in 1703, and held the
office three years and in 1708 was again chosen and filled it until 1730.
As a townsman he was very popular as is shown by the various offices to which
he was appointed.
He was in the doleful expedition of Phillips against Quebec in 1690, as appears
by a letter to his father, William, written at Weymouth about 27 July 1690.
The letter lists officers and men and a later letter of a descendant describes
the short provisions and hunger.
His tombstone was NOT engraved with the Greyhound Coat of Arms that was granted
to Willaim Carpenter in England in 1663.  It was Daniel Charles Carpenter b.
8 Nov 1695 who died 26 Jan 1763 who had it engraved!

Subject:        [CARPENTER] Bliss and Redway In-Laws of Rehoboth Carpenters
To:         CARPENTER-L@rootsweb.com

Having recently been reminded of the ease with which genealogical errors take
on a life of their own, robustly surviving in the face of corrections, I
realized I had never posted the following items online, where they might have
a chance of supplanting the inaccuracies with which they compete.

DANIEL4 CARPENTER, born 8 October 1669, son of William3 Carpenter and his
second wife, Miriam "Saile" (dau. of Edward Sale/Sarle of Weymouth and
Rehoboth), married at Rehoboth, 15 April 1695, BETHIAH3 BLISS.  Daniel's
sister MIRIAM4 CARPENTER, born 16 October 1674, married at Rehoboth, 23 June
1691, JONATHAN3 BLISS, Bethiah's brother.

Bethiah and Jonathan Bliss's father is easily and accurately identified as
JONATHAN2 BLISS, son of Thomas1 and Dorothy (Wheatlie) Bliss of Braintree and
Rehoboth.  The oft-repeated claim that Jonathan2's wife (i.e., Bethiah and
Jonathan3's mother) was MIRIAM HARMON, however, is false.  She was, in fact,
neither a Miriam nor a Harmon; there is no record of a Miriam Harmon in New
England during this period.  Jonathan2 Bliss's wife was almost certainly a
daughter of George PUFFER of Braintree, Mass., probably named RACHEL.  For a
complete discussion of the factors that led to this misidentification and the
evidence supporting its correction, see NEHGR 151(1997):32-37.

Brothers SAMUEL3 and ABIAH3 CARPENTER, sons of William2 and Abigail
(Briant)  Carpenter, also married daughters of James1 Redway: Samuel m. 25 May 1660,
SARAH REDWAY, and Abiah m. say 1667, MARY REDWAY.  As above, the
identity of the Redway sisters' mother is unknown.

Those with one or more Rehoboth Carpenter ancestors who married a Bliss or Redway may, after reading the material below, discover that they need to correct the information they have for the Bliss and/or Redway mothers-in-law of those Carpenters.
DANIEL4 CARPENTER, born 8 October 1669, son of William3 Carpenter and his second wife, Miriam "Saile" (dau. of Edward Sale/Sarle of Weymouth and Rehoboth), married at Rehoboth, 15 April 1695, BETHIAH3 BLISS.
