!The last will and testament of Abraham Carpenter, dated 2 Jan 1756, proved 24

indoor moveables, and after her decease to be devided between "my granddaughter
Abiel Carpenter and Lois Carpenter the daughter of my granddaughter Amey."
Both Abiel (the son) and Abraham are to pay 5 pounds to the granddaughter Abiel
when she comes of age.  Witnessed by Thomas Carpenter, Joseph Hopkins and
Judith Carpenter.  By the will it appears that Abiel was his only living child.

This individual has the following other parents in the Ancestral File:
Samuel /CARPENTER/ (AFN:8N40-R1) and Sarah /READWAY/ (AFN:8N40-S6)

Abraham was much interested in building and supporting a place of worship as
is indicated by the following and took a very active part in that direction in
the community in which he lived;
"That whereas, it was conditionly voted and agreed by the inhabitants of the
Town of Rehoboth, at a lawful town meeting, the 21th day of October 1717, that
the congregation of Palmer's River should have 50 pounds in money for and
towards finishing the meeting house now set up and begun to be built at

Palmer's River.
In testimony, and for the confirmation thereof, we have hereunto subscribed our
hands this ninth day of June, 'Anno Domini' 1718."
Among the signitures to the above is the name of Abraham Carpenter.
There is additional notes to the above on page 60 of the Carpenter Memorial.

68. Hannah Carpenter

Notes below by Eugene Cole Zubrinsky
Ojai, California, 2009

i. HANNAH3 CARPENTER, b. between ca. 1659 (parents m. ca. 1658) and say 1661/2, living Musketa Cove 19 March 1719/20 (husband's will); m. Musketa Cove or vicinity before 17 Feb. 1682[/3?] (probably by 14 Jan. 1681[/2?]), WILLIAM THORNYCRAFT, b. probably Warwick, d. Musketa Cove between 6 April 1720 (sold land) and 19 Dec. 1728 (will proved), son of Thomas and Jean? (______) Thornycraft of Warwick (by 1647) and Maspeth Kills, Newtown (now Elmhurst, Queens Co.), L.I. (NYWills 11:80; MARRIAGE, above; WarTR1 1-296 passim [215, 217]; WarTR2 29, 141, 251, 252, 329; Cock-Cocks-Cox 357; OBTR 1:378, 6:654; NYGBR 64:31, citing NTR [1:]158).
On 17 February 1682 [probably 1682/3], William Thornycraft conveyed "twenty Accars of Land unto _his father in Law_ Joseph Carpenter . . . for and in Consideration of fifty Accars of Land in hand and reseaved, of _his father_ Joseph Carpenter" (emphases added) (OBTR 1:643; Carpenter [1901] 45 omits portion of quoted passage following ellipsis points). On the same date, Carpenter, in an exchange of fifty-acre lots with Nicholas Simkins, obtained the parcel he gave to Thornycraft, abutting the twenty acres his son-in-law gave him in return (OBTR 1:642-44). Thornycraft's right to the twenty acres of woodland he traded to Joseph Carpenter had been granted to him on 14 Jan. 1681[/2?] by a deed from the five Musketa Cove proprietors, including Carpenter (OBTR 1:639-40). It is doubtful that this grant to Thornycraft--also including "A sartin peece or parsell of Land whare hee now Inhabitts and Builtt upon for A home Lott as within fenc Allredy InClosed" and a parcel of upland--would have been made until he had married (in which case he need not have been twenty-one to receive it). The lots Thornycraft and Carpenter exchanged were adjacent and thus presumably of comparable quality. From this, the transfers' transaction date, and a gift of land made by Joseph Carpenter probably four days (rather than a year and four days) earlier (see no. ii, below), it is reasonable to conclude that the thirty acres Thornycraft gained from the trade was a marriage settlement from his father-in-law. The will of William Thorneycraft Sr. of Musketa Cove, dated 19 March 1719/20 and proved 19 Dec. 1728, names wife Hannah; sons William, Joseph, and Thomas; and daughters Hannah Washburn, Elizabeth Pellam (Pelham), Mary Thorneycraft, Jane Carpenter [m. cousin Silas, son of William (no. iv, below)], and Phebe Thorneycraft; the witnesses were Mary Carpenter, Thomas Pearsall, and Joseph Carpenter (NYWills 11:80, 85). . . .

D. H. Carpenter gives Joseph and Hannah a sixth child: Hannah, "born 1672-3, married Jacob Hicks in 1690" (Carpenter [1901] 43). A few secondary sources state that the maiden name of Jacob Hicks's wife was Carpenter, but not all give her parentage, and none presents supporting evidence (see, for example, Mott Gen 372; Shotwell Gen 237, 280; Cornell Gen 383; Seaman-Husband 84). In his will, dated in 1751, Jacob Hicks's bequests to wife Hannah include "all the goods she brought with her when married" (NYWills 5:93-94). The quoted phrase implies that Hannah (whatever her maiden name) was not Hicks's first wife and probably married him long after his children were born (at Hempstead between 1702--making a 1690 marriage date unlikely [see above]--and about 1718) (see Colonial Fams 3:1330). More to the point, however, the Carpenter daughter whom D. H. Carpenter is unable to identify by forename but correctly describes as having married William Thornycraft is almost certainly the woman whom Thornycraft's will calls "my wife Hannah" (see Carpenter [1901] 43; NYWills 11:80; child no. i, above).

(The only Carpenter during this period associated with the vicinity of Rockaway was her paternal uncle Ephraim, who, late in life, settled at West Neck, on the south side of Oyster Bay Twp and probably died there.)  She's the Carpenter daughter whose forename Carpenter [1901] was unable to supply; she married William Thornycraft.  There's no evidence that Jacob Hicks's wife was a Carpenter, let alone a daughter of Hannah3."  See Gene's notes above.

Notes below by Eugene Cole Zubrinsky
Ojai, California, 2009. See father's notes for complete listing.

Children of Joseph2 and Hannah (Carpenter) Carpenter, i-iv born probably at Pawtuxet (Warwick) (birth order uncertain):

iii. JOSEPH CARPENTER, b. between ca. 1659 and 9 July 1663 (perhaps by 13 Feb. 1661/2), d. Musketa Cove between 9 Sept. 1687 (quitrent payment) and 6 Jan. 1691 [probably 1691/2]; m. by 1685 (1st known child b. 16 Oct.) (OBTR 2:337, 350-51).
That records dated in mid-Feb. 1682[/3] call his father Joseph "Sr:" or "Sen:" suggests that Joseph (Jr.) was by then of age (OBTR 1:640-41; DEATH, par. 3, above). He was certainly so by 9 July 1684, when he and his mother were named administrators of his father's estate (Hist Mss 130). He was "late deceased" when a "memorandum" of the birth, on 16 Oct. 1685, of his "Eldest son and Heire," Joseph, was recorded at the top of a page also containing a record dated 6 Jan. 1691 (OBTR 2:350-51).
The identity of Joseph's wife is at best uncertain. The wife Ann(e) that D. H. Carpenter attributes to him was probably his stepmother, Ann (Weekes) Carpenter (see Carpenter [1901] 44; OBTR 1:644-47, 2:127-29, 650-51). Hinshaw gives Joseph's namesake son's mother as Anne, but while his main sources are original Quaker records, they are supplemented by others, some secondary (see Quaker Gen 1, 391). The younger Joseph's Musketa Cove birth record does not name his mother, and the otherwise informative Quaker record of his death names neither parent (see OBTR 2:350; Carpenter [1901] 64n and Hazard Index, both citing WMM-VR A:159). It is therefore probable that Hinshaw's identification of the younger man's mother as Anne derives ultimately from the D. H. Carpenter volume. Note, however, that the younger Joseph's first daughter was named Ann (Quaker Genealogy 391; Carpenter [1901] 66, 93). D. H. Carpenter's further supposition concerning the elder Joseph's wife--"we now think she was daughter of Thomas Thornycraft and sister to William Thornycraft"--is unsupported, as is the assertion of another author (whose Carpenter section builds upon Carpenter [1901]) that she was probably Mary Thornycraft (see Carpenter [1901] 44; Cock-Cocks-Cox 357).
Joseph3 had a second son, Thomas, who is said by D. H. Carpenter to have been born on 16 Aug. 1687 (OBTR 3:344-45 [1708 quitclaim, Joseph to "my Brother Thomas"]; Carpenter [1901] 44 [b. 15 Aug.], 67; Haviland Gen 110). Seeming to confirm this is the 1 Jan. 1859 account by Sarah C. Field (1797-1879) of a family record then in her possession or that of her mother, Jane (Haviland) Field (1765-1860), giving Thomas's birth date as "8 mo., 16th day, 1687" (Haviland Gen 186). Prior to 1752, however, the eighth month was not August but October (as consistent with the latter's Latin origin). Without informing the reader of his translations, D. H. Carpenter expresses with named months many dates that are actually recorded with numbered ones (including all those from Quaker records). Because his conversions of pre-1752 numbered-month dates are mistakenly based on modern reckoning, they are consistently off by two months. Note, however, that Thomas's corrected birth date, 16 October 1687, contains the same day and month as his brother Joseph's (see above). So while the October date is more reliable than the August one, the former should nevertheless be regarded with some caution. Thomas certainly had been born by 26 Nov. 1687: he and brother Joseph sold land to their uncle Nathaniel on 26 Nov. 1708 (OBTR 3:310-12).
The aforementioned family record gives the date of Joseph3's son Thomas's marriage as "10 mo., 14th day, 1708" [14 Dec. (not Oct.) 1708] (Haviland Gen 110 [Oct.], 186 [10 mo.]; see also Carpenter [1901] 67 [Oct.]). While his wife is identified therein only as Hannah, several secondary sources have her as Hannah Alsop, daughter of Thomas [sic] and Hannah (Underwood) Alsop (see, for example, Haviland Gen 110; Carpenter [1901] 67). This is doubly incorrect, however: First, the secondary literature has long accepted (albeit without documentation) that Hannah Underwood married the immigrant Richard Alsop; the earliest Thomas Alsop was their son, born in 1687 (also Thomas Carpenter's birth year), who married Susannah Blackwell (GMB 3:1862, 1863; Alsop Gen 3, 4; Underhill Gen 65). And second, Richard and Hannah Alsop's daughter Hannah married Joseph Sackett (Alsop Gen 2 [Richard Alsop will (transcr.), naming dau. Hannah Sackett], 4; Underhill Gen 66). There was a marriage between a Thomas Carpenter, son of Joseph, and a Hannah Alsop, daughter of Richard, but it occurred in 1777 (Hazard Index, citing WMM-VR A:250). The identity of Hannah, wife of the subject Thomas Carpenter, is unknown.

III) Joseph (2), eldest child of Joseph (1) and Hannah (Carpenter) Carpenter, was born about 1660, at Pawtuxet, and inherited the paternal estate, operating a mill and the plantation. There is a tradition that he was drowned trying to save the mill in a freshet. At any rate he died between September 9, 1687, and 1692. His wife Ann was probably a daughter of Thomas Thornycraft. Record of two sons is found: Joseph, mentioned below; Thomas, born August 15, 1687.

Anne Thornycraft

NAME:

Both forename and surname are unconfirmed and should be presented such as to clearly indicate uncertainty—not just in Joseph Carpenter’s notes. You might not have considered it, but given the tendency of the average reader to ignore footnotes (attending to which requires nothing more than a shift of the eyes), it’s likely that many visitors to your databased will copy the primary entries and never consult the notes.

Ann Simpkins

Notes below by Eugene Cole Zubrinsky
Ojai, California, 2009

The identity of Joseph’s wife is at best uncertain. The wife Ann(e) that D. H. Carpenter attributes to him was probably his stepmother, Ann (Weekes) Carpenter (see Carpenter [1901] 44; OBTR 1:644–47, 2:127–29, 650–51). Hinshaw gives Joseph’s namesake son’s mother as Anne, but while his main sources are original Quaker records, they are supplemented by others, some secondary (see Quaker Gen 1, 391). The younger Joseph’s Musketa Cove birth record does not name his mother, and the otherwise informative Quaker record of his death names neither parent (see OBTR 2:350; Carpenter [1901] 64n and Hazard Index, both citing WMM-VR A:159). It is therefore probable that Hinshaw’s identification of the younger man’s mother as Anne derives ultimately from the D. H. Carpenter volume. Note, however, that the younger Joseph’s first daughter was named Ann (Quaker Genealogy 391; Carpenter [1901] 66, 93). D. H. Carpenter’s further supposition concerning the elder Joseph’s wife "we now think she was daughter of Thomas Thornycraft and sister to William Thornycraft”--is unsupported, as is the assertion of another author (whose Carpenter section builds upon Carpenter [1901]) that she was probably Mary Thornycraft (see Carpenter [1901] 44; Cock-Cocks-Cox 357).

71. William Carpenter

Notes below by Eugene Cole Zubrinsky
Ojai, California, 2009

D. H. Carpenter calls it "a _possibility_ amounting to a _probability_" (his emphases) that Elizabeth was the daughter of William's uncle Ephraim Carpenter and says that she died about 1743 (Carpenter [1901] 50); he fails to support either assertion, however. G. W. Cocks says that Elizabeth's parentage is "not certainly known, but may have been Moses and Elizabeth (Weeden) Mudge, then of Musketa Cove, who had a dau. Elizabeth, b. 28/12 mo. (Feb.) 1674" (Cock-Cocks-Cox 358, 385). Note that this is expressed as no more than a possibility. There is, moreover, no known basis for the assertion that Moses and Elizabeth Mudge had a daughter Elizabeth, let alone that she was born on the date stated (which is not to say that either is necessarily false). An Elizabeth Mudge was born at Northampton, Mass., 10 Oct. 1673 and another at Charlestown, Mass., 12 March 1674, but their respective parents and husbands are not those of the same-named woman mentioned by Cocks (see Mudge Gen 46, 49; TAG 81:25; Charlestown Gens 2:693). In the most recent and authoritative account of Moses Mudge and his family, Gale Ion Harris, FASG (citing an unpublished typescript by Harry Macy Jr., FASG) presents Mudge's issue as consisting of two sons and no daughters (see TAG 81:18-30, at 24 [24n38 corrects Mudge Gen 48]). Elizabeth (Mrs. William) Carpenter's maiden name is unknown. And in any case, since the one known record in which her forename appears as William's wife is dated in 1720 (see above), it is not certain that she was the mother of his children.

AFN 8MH8-HS and MTLC-5L (SP 4 Dec 1942) are the same person.
AFN V6TG-V9 (b. abt 1666) has a spouse named Hannah Haviland with one child
named Silas who had Timothy who married Elizabeth Anderson and they had
Jerimiah (b. 28 Aug 1760) who married Jane Shears.  Other than the AF, no
marriage or pedigree like this can be found.  Until confirmed we list Hannah as
a spouse for this William with mother as listed for Silas Carpenter.
Silas b. abt 1681 found as a son to Silas b. 1650, grandson to William
Carpenter.  Different mother however.  Moved to that family.

Another child: a Timothy Carpenter is alleged to be a son of William,
(Due to an error in a will extract book, Admiral Carpenter thought
the father of his Timothy was William.  Silas is the correct name for that
record.  It was Silas who owned land near Armonk and HIS son named
Timothy did not ever marry Phoebe Coles.  This caused much confusion.)
who owned land near Armonk in 1718.  The Timothy Carpenter married Phoebe
Coles was not the son of his William (NOW KNOWN CORRECTLY AS SILAS) per
Charles L. Carpenter, Rear Admiral USN Ret. (in a letter dated Dec. 12, 1974).

There was two (2) Timothy Carpeters in this time period who are often confused.
1) Timothy the son of William C. & Elizabeth Smith Mudge who married Phoebe
(Coles) of this William.   AND
2) Timothy the son of Silas C. & Jean or Jane Thornycraft who married Elizabeth
Anderson.   The now Deceased Admirial Carpenter had once thought the two might
be the same BUT thanks to corrections, wills and more research realized there
was 2 (TWO) Timothy Carpenters.  The Admiral is descended from the Timothy who
was the son of Silas (At one time erroneous known as William) Carpenter.

William acted as one of the Proprietors after the death of his brother Joseph
until 1706, when his nephew Joseph reached legal age.  The Town Records shows
very clearly that he was a large land-owner and prominent in the affairs of the
plantation.  He was a blacksmith by trade, and had his homestead and shop in
that part of town known as "Duck Pond."  He sold this property in 1720, and
probably moved to Westchester county, though he still had landed interests at
Musketa Cove as late as 1734.

Hannah Haviland

This Hannah is sometimes referred to as being born in 1743 and has a father
named Solomon Haviland.  1743 is the year William's spouse Elizabeth died.
William was born in 1666 and married a person born in 1743 - 79 years
difference in age!  This strains credibility to be polite.  This data is kept
here as a "correction" to the record.

Gene Zubrinsky writes:
Hannah Haviland, listed as William4's second wife: Your notes, intended as a "correction to the record," imply that there is nevertheless a basis for attributing to William a wife named Hannah Haviland (though not the one mentioned in the notes); I know of no evidence even hinting at it.  This almost certainly represents confusion with a wife of that name whom Carpenter [1901] attributes to Benedict Carpenter, son of William4 and Elizabeth (also as per Carpenter [1901]).

72. Capt. Nathaniel Carpenter

Notes below by Eugene Cole Zubrinsky Ojai, California, 2008

Children of Joseph2 and Hannah (Carpenter) Carpenter, i-iv born probably at Pawtuxet (Warwick) (birth order uncertain):

v. NATHANIEL CARPENTER, b. Pawtuxet (Warwick) or Musketa Cove between say 1668 and 10 Feb. 1672[/3?] (grantee 10 Feb. 1693[/4?]), d. North Castle 25 2nd mo. [April (not Feb.)] 1730; m. Musketa Cove 5 Nov. 1690, TAMAR COLES, b. 18 May 1673, dau. of Robert and Mercy (Wright?) Coles (OBTR 1:652-53, 655, 2:101-3; FMM-VR 220; MacDonough-Hackstaff 455).

Nathaniel is said to have been probably the first white child born at Musketa Cove (see Carpenter [1901] 43, 50). This, however, is based on the unsupported assertion that he was born in the summer of 1668 and the questionable assumption that both parents had settled on Long Island by that time (see Carpenter [1901] 50; OBTR 2:682; RESIDENCES, above). The record of his death calls him Nathaniel "Juner," but the only other man of that name known to have been residing at North Castle at the time was his son, who died in late 1758 (see FMM-VR 220; Quaker Gen 63; NYWills 5:274; Carpenter [1901] 85). An item in the 1 Jan. 1759 issue of the _New-York Mercury_ is often said online to refer to the elder Nathaniel but in fact concerns the estate settlement of his recently deceased son. Naming "Captain Nathaniel Carpenter, deceas'd, of North-Castle, in Westchester County, and Province of New-York," the notice was placed by Caleb Fowler and Caleb Green, "Executors, in said County" (Hist Newspapers). The latter two men were brothers-in-law of the younger Nathaniel, whose will names them as executors (NYWills 5:274; Carpenter [1901] 85-86).

CHILD: Not Proven. Solomon Carpenter, possibly a son, as noted genealogist Boutwell Dunlap thought that a brother to the Joseph of this Nathaniel Carpenter settled near Joseph when he came to VA.
Soloman was probably related but not a child in this family.

FOUNDER: Nathaniel Carpenter is considered the founder of the Virginia (VA) Carpenters through his sons John and Joseph who moved into Virginia. Nathaniel was the son of Joseph Carpenter, the grandson of William Carpenter of Amesbury, the founder of the Providence, RI Branch of the Carpenters.
Nathaniel was the son of Hannah Carpenter, the grandson of William Carpenter, the founder of the Rehoboth, MA Branch of the Carpenters.

76. Joseph Carpenter

NOTE: See father's notes for Gene Zubrinsky's data on this individual.
Confirmed son.

Number 60 in the Carpenter Memorial.  Page 59.
Family on page 77 (#32).

"We are unable to find any record of a son Samuel on record of births and
deaths or by deeds, but it is evident that there was a Samuel, a near relative
of this family, which could not refer to the then known Samuels of Rehoboth or
RI.  It would be very natural that Abiah would name a son after his brother
Samuel with whom he had been so intimately connected in early life in
business matters.  We think it is warranted to assume that he had a son named
Samuel, who was the father of at least 5 children, who could not at that time
have belonged to any known Carpenter family of Providence or Rehoboth.  He was
probably first or second son, born about 1670 (most likely abt 1663), a
resident of Providence and admitted a freeman there."  page 59.
A correction on page 833 indicates Samuel married Bethiah Bliss on 15 April
1695.  But other records indicate she was married to Daniel Carpenter this same
date.  See below.   Is it possible that there was two Bethiah's?

E-MAIL: (Partial) 6 Aug 2000 From: Jack A Schoedinger
Benjamin is the son of Thomas B. Carpenter (Joseph, Abiah, William)
b. August 3, 1738 and Dorcas Grinnel b. October 25, 1759, who
married Thankful Thompson b. November 25, 1765 daughter of Elias Thompson
and Mary Stanton. This Benjamin, his wife and parents are all buried in
the Perryville Church Cemetery in South Kingston, RI. , and as previously
noted, Benjamin and his wife Thankful were moved from their
homestead to Perryville after 1880.     ...
The confusion may  be  with John L. Carpenter' s "Thankful". According to
the Rhode Island data base there are four Thankfuls buried in Perryville
Church Cemetery or Oakdell Cemetery, both of which are in South Kingston,
Rhode Island. They are:         Thankful  A  1858c -  Nov 17 1860     Thankful
M 1808c - Jul 28 1859,   Benjamin's wife Thankful T (Thompson) 1769c -
Dec 27 1826   and Thankful T  1831c - Sep 27 1838  with the last name
spelled Carpinter.
Hope this helps in resolving this conflict.  I do have one question for
you. Do you have any information on a Benjamin Carpenter b. 1761c and
died February 25, 184. This Benjamin was also buried in in the
Carpenter-Wightman Lot, Washington County, Rhode Island?
Ken.

Hannah

An abstract of the will of Hannah Carpenter, relict of Joseph Carpenter, son
of Abiah, dated 1760, "Gives to her children, namely, son Thomas Parker,
daughter Freelove Parker, Hannah Wilbur, and Abigail Carpenter."
Note married names.

77. Oliver Carpenter

NOTE: See father's notes for Gene Zubrinsky's data on this individual.
Confirmed son.
Gene Zubrinsky writes:
Oliver married two Sarahs. The first Sarah, whose maiden name is unknown, is recorded in 1701 as the mother of Oliver's son William, one of only three of Oliver's approximately 11 [not 17 or 19] children recorded at birth. It is uncertain whether she was his first wife and mother of the several children born prior to William. A separate marriage record should be created for Sarah Okilley, whom Oliver married at Yarmouth, Mass., on 6 November 1721. She was the mother of Joshua, b. __ January 1724, and Oliver, b. 24 July 1727; both births are recorded at North Kingstown.

Old Notes:
NOTE:  I list 3 marriages for Oliver.  Marriage 1 & 2 confirmed by Gene Zubrinsky. Marriage 3 is the odd children that are probably not his.

Number 54 in the Carpenter memorial. Page 58.   Family on page 75+.

CHILDREN: 19 children listed in the above.  AF has 22 children listed,
including 3 children  not in the CM.  (Phebe b. 1714, Joshua b. 1716 and
Timothy b. 1723) These children belong to Oliver's son, Oliver b. 1795.  This
Oliver's children born from 1701 to 1725 with only one spouse in records. See
below. Oliver Sr., may have been married twice, but there is no record of this.
IF: IF this was so (2 wives) a possible gap occurs in 1710 in children and
a breakdown of twins being born.  IF children naming sequence was
followed in this family the first wife would have been named Meribah or Mercy
for a nickname.  However, according to science, a healthy human female is
quite capable of having 15 births in her reproductive years.  That some of
them were twins is remarkable, but not unknown.  Was there another marriage to
another Sarah?
SEE BELOW: Discussion of children.  John F. Chandler cites what is known and
not known based upon records found. Net summary is less children proved!
SEE: E-MAIL:  Gene Zubrinsky provides information that a child was dropped from this line.
See below.

SEE: The Carpenter Family and Related Family Historical Journal, Winter 1994,
Vol.5 Number 7 on page 414, lists only 13 known and one other child, Nathaniel.
as a possible child.  Other children names not known.

MISC: He owned real estate in several townships as appears in his will.
He deeded to his brother Joseph for love, March 18, 1705, six acres of land
at Pawtuxet which was his father's, Abiah Carpenter, deceased.
On 27 Jul 1724, he deeded land to his son, Christopher of East Greenwich.
On 23 Nov 1724 he deeded land to his son, John of Warwick, 130 acres in East
Greenwich.
On 4 Oct. 1727 he was administrator to the estate of his son, Oliver,
of East Greenwich.  His son Oliver probably died after his
father's will was made and before his father died.

WILL: Abstract of the will of Oliver Carpenter Sr., wife Sarah.  Will
MADE 20 Nov. 1727 in Kingstown, East Greenwich, RI. Note the word "MADE."
The Austin record gives "prob." as the abreiviation for probated not proved.
His wife Sarah was executrix. His friend Jeremiah Gould, overseer.
For details of who got what see page 58.

MISC: Oliver mentions 9 children in his will in 1727, one of which was Oliver
who died after the will was made but before probate.  Additional children who
got their estate prior to the will being made was Christopher (in 1724 - see
above) and John (in 1724).  Two other children (Nathaniel and Jeremiah) are
confirmed alive after 1727 (They probably received thier estate - no record
though).   <9 + 2 + 2 = 13>  The rest of the children (8 total) probably died
prior to 1727 and their father's will being made.

DATA REVIEW
In reviewing the CM, your (JFC) data and mine (JRC),
I find the following differences ...
The age range that you (JFC) have is from 1695 to 1727 or 32 years.
If the wife was age 18 at marriage she would be age 50 at the birth
of her last child.
The age range that I (JRC) have is from 1695 to 1724 or 29 years.
If the wife was age 18 at marriage she would be age 47 at the birth
of her last child.
The age range that is in the CM is 1695 to 1725 or 30 years.
If the wife was age 18 at marriage she would be age 48 at the birth
of her last child.
Of the 19 children in the CM you have 16 verses my 18.
You (JFC) indicate 5 children that may not have existed in this family
compared to JRC version.
I (JRC) indicate 3 children that belong to a younger son named Oliver b. 1695.
You seem to dismiss the earlier Oliver of 1695, while I see 3
generations of Olivers.

SUMMARY
While (6) this is different from what you and I have
it is an interesting division of (5) the combined children
simply based on the age 18 guess of spouses.
You seem to rule out the earlier Oliver or second Oliver.
Yet the 3 generations of Olivers seem to make sense to me.
May I ask why?   Comments?  Did I summarize your data correctly?
Sincerely, John R. Carpenter La Mesa, CA.

E-MAIL: Re: CD Family 29 - Oliver of Abiah Date:  Mon, 15 Nov 1999
From: "John F. Chandler"  John,
Ok, once more into the breach.  As I see it, I am not "discarding" a
family -- I simply see no reason to manufacture one as Amos evidently
tried to.  It is clear that he failed, in view of the evidence, so it is
necessary to start fresh.  Your valiant attempt to make 3 generations of
Olivers fails on the same evidence.  The thing you can't get around is
the will of Oliver Carpenter, dated 1727 Nov 20 in North Kingstown.  I
have gone over this with you before, so I'm surprised that you failed to
take it into account.  The provisions of the will identify the writer of
it as the father of #7856 Solomon, #7839 Thomas, #7853 Abiah, #7848
Sarah, #7858 Joshua, and #12943 Oliver.  The various deeds and such that
you already had in your files identify this same Oliver as the father of
#7850 Christopher, #7861 John, and #53001 Oliver (my new number).  The
vital records show three sets of children of "Oliver and Sarah", one in
each of the three towns where they lived.  It is certainly possible that
these were not all the same Oliver, but we can work backwards and see
what we get.  Unquestionably, #7858 Joshua and #12943 Oliver were the
two registered in N Kingstown (both underage in 1727, and Oliver
explicitly called the youngest son).  The E Greenwich vitals give us
#53001 Oliver, so we must also bring along #7848 Sarah and #7852
Benjamin, who are grouped with Oliver.  That leaves only the Warwick
records, showing #7831 William as the son of an Oliver who might or
might not be the same.  This is the evidence and is nonadjustable.
There are a few more inferences as well: the fact that this Oliver had
grown-up sons as of 1724 guarantees that he was born no later than about
1680, so there is no reason to suppose that he was *not* the father of
William, even if his wife Sarah in 1701 was different from the wife
Sarah he mentioned in his will of 1727.  It also means he was very
likely the same Oliver who was described as the son of Abiah in a 1705
deed (also in your files).  Finally, the fact that not all the sons
mentioned in the will were underage makes it quite clear that the
testator was indeed the same person as (or at least as old as) the
Oliver who made the deeds in 1724.  That brings us to the following list
of children (known birth dates in parentheses):
Solomon
Christopher
William? (1701)
John
Thomas
Abiah
Oliver (1716)
Sarah (1717)
Benjamin (1719)
Joshua (1724)
Oliver (1727)
The remaining children that I assigned to this family are all tentative,
as far as this evidence is concerned, but I figure there is other
evidence that supports these links, and there is also the fact that
Oliver's 1727 will has a few illegible names in it.  So, let's throw
in Nathaniel and Hannah.  Robert and Meribah seem more doubtful, and
Jeremiah seems to be the subject of some debate as well, but I can
give them the benefit of the doubt if you want to.
To recap, you wrote:
>Do you think that CM Family # 103 comes from other than Oliver of Oliver
>of Abiah?
Yes.  It comes from the fertile imagination of Amos Carpenter.
Tackling a few remaining points...
Phebe and Timothy are even more doubtful than the others.  Timothy's
reputed birth date is only 8 months before Joshua's (then again, maybe
it's 20 months).
The Oliver Jr that you want to create (b c1695) could have existed, but,
if he did, then he died before 1716, so he doesn't fulfill the need that
motivated his creation in the first place.
In a sense, the Abigail and Ann that you include under Oliver did exist,
but they were the daughters of Joseph, not Oliver.
The two extra Joshuas don't belong.  The first is an apparently
manufactured (and unrecorded) "twin" of the first Oliver.  Since you
have no evidence about him at all, you will have to let him go (and,
needless to say, a citation by Amos Carpenter does not by itself
constitute evidence).  The second is the one that triggered your remark
about how odd it was that two Olivers should have a son Joshua each
about the same time.  Interestingly enough, neither one has the correct
birth date (that is, neither one agrees with the birth found in the N.K.
vital records: 1724 Jan, no day specified).  Since the two Olivers were
evidently only one, these two Joshuas are similarly only one.
The David you show is another example with absolutely no evidence.
John F. Chandler.

E-MAIL: 11-15-99 to John F. Chandler.
Dear John,
I had to try out the 3 generation speculation approach one more time.  But you
are correct, the conservative and factual basics show only the following
children that you mentioned in your last message.
> Solomon
> Christopher
> William? (1701)
> John
> Thomas
> Abiah
> Oliver (1716)
> Sarah (1717)
> Benjamin (1719)
> Joshua (1724)
> Oliver (1727)
I took our discussions and placed them in the notes of Oliver Carpenter (b.
1675/1680 MY RIN 7828). Along with the phrase under CHILDREN ...
"SEE BELOW: Discussion of children.  John F. Chandler cites what is known and
not known based upon records found. Net summary is less children proved!"
I appreciate your efforts in showing what is known and not known.  At this time
we have just the basic family of Oliver with what is known. Until further data
comes along, we should stick to the basics of what is known.
Sincerely, John R. Carpenter.

Subject: Corrections to "Claimed Ancestral Lineages"
John,
The lineage posted for FTDNA Kit Numbers 6335 and 5543 (through Abiah Carpenter) is mistaken on at least two counts.  First, Oliver Carpenter was born well before 1675, probably by 1667.  The following passage is from the article I'm preparing:
On 3 September 1675 the Providence constable was ordered to bring more than a dozen people, including "Abiah Carpenter, & olivour Carpenter," before a colony magistrate to answer the complaint of Samuel Reape, apparently arising from a year-old dispute.[92] Presumably Oliver had by then (1674) reached the age--seven, under English common law--at which moral discernment was thought possible.[93] When in July 1687 and again the following December he killed a wolf,[94] Oliver was presumably at least in his late teens.

Second, the only Jeremiah Carpenter of whom there is a record was not the son of Oliver but of Oliver's son Christopher.  (Based only in part on his father Oliver's revised birth year, Christopher would have been born in the 1690s [not ca. 1718, as ABC has it on p. 75]; he married, after all, before 1715 [see ABC p. 129]).  ABC has taken a single Jeremiah Carpenter and attributed him both to Oliver and to Christopher.  The deForests preface their account of this Carpenter line with the following: "The Rehoboth Branch of the Carpenter Family (1898) contains so many obvious inaccuracies and contradictions, especially in the sections concerning the children of Abiah3 Carpenter, Oliver4 Carpenter, and Christopher5 Carpenter, that the present writers have thought it best to construct the family line from other sources" (L. Effingham deForest and Anne Lawrence deForest, James Cox Brady and His Ancestry [New York, 1933], 135).  Accordingly, they assign Jeremiah (m. Elizabeth Reynolds; ch. Mercy, Christopher, Merebah, Jonathan, Mary, Mary [again], Elizabeth, and Joshua) to Christopher and omit anyone of that name from their account of Oliver's children.  The only birth record of a Jeremiah Carpenter in Rhode Island is that at East Greenwich (not North Kingstown), in which Jeremiah Carpenter, son of Christopher and Mary (------) Carpenter, was born on 18 June 1715 (Arnold, Vital Record of Rhode Island,1:2:107).  Although Oliver Carpenter's will was damaged by fire, and not all his legatee's names are discernible, the name Jeremiah does not appear (North Kingstown Town Council and Probate Records, 6:249-51).  (Incidentally, ABC's abstract of Oliver's will [which he almost certainly copied from Austin, Genealogical Dictionary of Rhode Island] incorrectly indicates that the second legatee named is a son Solomon.  This is false: the second legatee named is Christopher; the name Solomon does not appear in Oliver's will.)
Best regards,
Gene

See father's notes.
Elizabeth, maybe known as Mary probably married Joseph Hickok (b. 1645
