OBITUARY.  Otsego County Herald Times, Gaylord, MI, Thursday, Sep 4, 1952. Road Accident Claims Life of Gaylord Community Leader. Funeral Today for Elmer Widrig; Former Mayor, Businessman.  Hundreds, many from away, filled the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ, Latter Day Saints in Gaylord, to capacity and stood outside as rites were conducted at 2 p.m. today for Elmer Widrig, former mayor, business, church and civic leader.  Mr. Widrig, 54 years old, died of injuries suffered in an automobile accident near Traverse City, August 31.  Mrs. Widrig, with her husband, suffered cuts and bruises and from shock following news of his death.  They were on their way to their old home community of Bendon to attend a reunion.  Elder Harry Doth of Traverse City Latter Day Saints, district president of the denomination, delivered the funeral sermon and conducted the rites.  Burial was in Fairview, the Cem. Mr. Widrig took a leading part in gaining and developing for the city.  Floral offerings were not as numerous as they might have been had the family not requested that any money which would have been spent on flowers be sent instead to the Memorial Hospital Auxiliary memorial fund.  This is understood to have been in line with the expressed sentiment of Mr. Widrig who was a hospital director.  Mr. and Mrs. Widrig had been in Traverse City Saturday and were on their way to their old home town of Bendon in Benzie county when the car, driven by Mr. Widrig, struck a bump or washout, went out of control and overturned, throwing Mr. Widrig from the seat and onto the ground.  The accident occurred near the turn into Interlochen about 2:40 p.m.  Aid was nearly an hour in arriving it is reported.  Mr. and Mrs. Widrig were removed to Munson Hospital in Traverse City where every possible medical care was given. Mr. Widrig suffered fractured ribs, a punctured lung and fractured arm besides cuts and bruises.  He died in Munson hospital at 4:30 a.m. Labor Day.  The body was brought to the H.C. Walker and Son Funeral Home in Gaylord.  Mrs. Widrig was removed to the family home at 120 S. Elm avenue where she was placed under the care of Dr. Gordon L. McKillop.  She was able to attend her husband's funeral.  The death of Mr. Widrig leaves vacancies in the office of Kiwanis Club president; on the board of directors of Memorial Hospital; in the chairmanship of the Chamber of Commerce industrial committee; on the board of elders of the Latter Day Saints church, and the offices of counselor to both the Gaylord and district presidents.  Mr. Widrig, whose full name was Daniel Elmer Widrig, was born in Bendon, Benzie County, not far from Traverse City on Dec. 25, 1897.  He obtained his education in the schools of the community and as a young man became associated with his father, William Widrig, in the garage and blacksmithing business.  They continued in Bendon several years but in 1924 came to Gaylord and purchased the implement business conducted by Dirk Schreur and opened a blacksmith shop.  The faith that both showed in Gaylord and Otsego county when they decided to locate here has been justified by the growth of the community and their business in recent years.  The Widrig's obtained the John Deere implement agency in 1932 and have held it ever since. Since 1943 when his father retired, Elmer Widrig conducted the business by himself under the name "Widrig's Farm Store."  Much of the credit for development of Gaylord as a trading center can go to the Widrigs, not only through their personal efforts in dealing with farm people, but through support of community promotional institutions such as the Otsego County Chamber of Commerce in which Mr. Widrig was a long time member, a former director, and an active committee worker.  He was chairman of the industrial committee at the time of his death and served as a member the past four years.  Mr. Widrig's interest in farm affairs and in the prosperity of rural people is evidenced by his tireless effort in their behalf.  Three years ago he was chairman of the Mount Jack Farm Bureau.  The death of Mr. Widrig leaves a vacancy in the president's chair at Gaylord Kiwanis Club.  Mr. Widrig having taken office this year and immediately launched on a vigorous program of club activities, particularly emphasizing work among youth of the community.  Fraternally, Mr. Widrig was a member of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows at Vanderbilt and had occupied all the offices in the lodge.  Member of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ, Latter Day Saints, since he was eight years old, Mr. Widrig was a devoted churchman.  He was an elder in the Gaylord church many years and counselor both to the president of the Gaylord organization headed by Elder Allen Schreur, and to the district, headed by Elder Doty of Traverse City.  Elder Schreur, recovering from a recent heart attack in Gaylord hospital, expressed deepest sorrow and grief over the death of Mr. Widrig.  It was in the field of civic service that Mr. Widrig gave his greatest contribution to public welfare.  He served eight years on the city council before being elected mayor in 1943 and was named to the office for five consecutive years.  He also served briefly to fill a vacancy on the council early in 1950 but declined to be a candidate in the spring.  This brief service was part of his fulfillment of a pledge, given when he left the office of mayor, to aid his community in any way he was called on by the administration that followed him.  During the administration of Mr. Widrig, an outstanding accomplishment was purchase of the water system and immediate steps toward rehabilitating it to adequately serve the community.  Other accomplishments included an ambitious street paving program, annexation of several nearby areas, obtaining an additional fire truck, taking over Fairview Cem. and hiring a city engineer.  The city, during Mr. Widrig's time in office, took the lead in a successful campaign to obtain house-to-house mail delivery.  Mr. Widrig was active in the campaign to obtain a hospital for the community, served on the original hospital board, and when it was cut in size to its present number, was one of those named to the board of directors. Before coming to Gaylord from Bendon, Mr. Widrig served there as a member of the school board.  His widow, the former Anna May Myers, is a native of Bendon. Daughters are Mrs. Allen P. Christian of Detroit, the former Marjorie Widrig; Mrs. William Wiggins Jr. of Saginaw, the former Virginia Widrig; Mrs. James E. Bartlett, of Detroit, the former Dorothy Widrig, and Anna, a student at Gaylord Rural Agricultural High School.
