MY BROTHER RAYMOND
Florence L. (Carpenter) Shaw
My brother Raymond is not mentioned in the Carpenter family line, as he
was not a Carpenter by birth.
My mom was dating Charlie Racine, when she had an argument with her dad,
over coming in later than she was supposed to be in. Shortly after that,
she eloped with Charlie, got married and went to Mass. to live. Several
months later Granddad (her dad) found out where she was. Took the train
and went to Mass. and got her and had Lawyer Bugbee have the marriage
annulled. Parents could do that in those days. Then they found out she
was pregnant. Raymond was born May 19th on my moms birthday in Putnam.
The Doc was there, but Ray was very tiny and had many problems. The Doc
put him on the foot of the bed. My Grand Mother Cotton was a mid wife,
she took him, and worked on him, got him to crying, but could only save 1
of his eyes. Which most of his life he was called names like "one eye
dick"  "popeye", and some even worse. We in the family could not call him
that. My mom and dad forbid it.
Raymond must of been 6 or 7 when Mom and Dad got married, My dad always accepted Raymond as his son. Dad wanted to give Raymond the Carpenter name but lawyer Bugbee contacted Charley and he said no, that Raymond was the only child he would ever have, so Ray still held the name of Racine.
I do remember him coming to our house to see Ray, but never stayed long,
never took Ray home with them for a vacation, once in a while he would
give him something, but not really much, never supported him either. Some
of what I am saying comes from my Mom, Dad, and my Aunts Irene, Hazel and Nora, and all accounts where the same.
Raymond was a great brother to us all, and we all had his love. He
watched out for us younger kids. I remember a lot of things that Ray did
for me. As a baby when my mom got sick it was Ray who took care of me and Barney. When Mom and Dad had to go some where important Ray used to baby sit. The others were in school. He would make doll clothes for me on
Mom's sewing machine. or we would have tea parties, watered down tea for
me, and cookies. When I would become a brat, that I could be, he would
always tell me he was going to get me a big glass of milk, and I hated
milk, and it would work.
Helene would watch me once in a while, she must of been 11 or 12, when I
was born. But she was a tiny person, took after my grandma Cotton, plus
Helene, was always dressed just so, nothing out of place, never got
dirty. Raymond could handle me a lot better.
My mom and dad, lost Hazel as a baby a few months old, then I came
around. Hazel and I would only be a few months plus 1 year between us in
age, so when I was born, I was spoiled. and will admit I was a brat, I
got away with a lot of things the other kids didn't.
I just wanted to let every one know how Raymond came in to the Carpenter
family. Plus it was a God send for us later children of the Carpenter
family that He was there for us.
