LaVerne Carpenter, 95, Darlington, passed away July 27, 2011 at Sienna Crest Assisted Living in Darlington.
He was born March 10, 1916 in Darlington Township, the son of Bert and Alma (Hexom) Carpenter. LaVerne was united in marriage to Marvis Abraham on Aug. 28, 1940 at Darlington United Methodist Church.
He lived and farmed in Seymour Township until 1970, when he and his wife moved to Darlington Township where they farmed until retiring in 1985.
Following his retirement, LaVerne remained active by driving school bus for the Darlington School District for 10 years and later for the Commission on Aging for another 10 years.
LaVerne was a member of Grace Lutheran Church in Darlington and served on its church council. He was a 50-year member of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows Lodge #171 of Darlington. LaVerne served as an assessor of Seymour Township for three years, was past president of Stuart Cheese Company near Wiota, on the committee for Farm and Home Administration for two years, and on the United States Trotting Association.
He always loved horses and following his retirement owned and trained harness racing horses for local fairs and Chicago's Horse Racing Betting Track.
LaVerne was a mentor for a number of young people who were beginning farming and buying their homes.
LaVerne is survived by one son-in-law, four grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, and two sisters. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, one daughter, one brother, and one sister.
Memorial services were held Aug. 1, 2011 at Grace Lutheran Church, Darlington. The Rev. Luke S. Smetters of Wiota Lutheran Church officiated.
Burial was in Union Grove Cemetery in Darlington. For those who prefer, a memorial has been established in LaVerne's name.

Marvis M. Carpenter age 91 of Darlington, WI, passed away Monday, May 30, 2011 at Mineral Point Care Center, Mineral Point, WI.
She was born May 1, 1920 in Apple River Township, IL, the daughter of Wilbert and Floy (Downs) Abraham-Saalsaa.
Marvis graduated from Darlington High School in 1938.
She was united in marriage to LaVerne Carpenter on August 28, 1940 at Darlington United Methodist Church in Darlington.
Prior to her marriage she worked as an operator for the local Telephone Company. Marvis lived in the Darlington area all of her life. She farmed with her husband in Seymour Township until 1970 when they moved to Darlington Township and farmed until their retirement in 1985.
Marvis continued to be active and worked for Benedicts Dry Goods in Darlington for five years.Marvis is survived by her husband: LaVerne; son-in-law: Jerry Waelti of Delavan, WI; four grandchildren: Lisa (Brian) Fountaine of Dousman, WI, Mark (Yukari) Waelti of Hollywood, CA, Heidi (Scott) Terpstra of Delavan, WI, and Heather (Troy) Heflick of Janesville, WI; five great-grandchildren; two sisters: Lilas Saalsaa and Marion Olson both of Darlington; and one brother-in-law: Glenn Mummert of Darlington; two sisters-in-law: Arlene (Robert) Hirsbrunner of Wiota, WI, and Shirley (Jerry) Schwartz of Belvidere, IL; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her daughter: Carolyn Waelti; one brother: Howard Abraham; two sisters: Burnett Erickson and Virginia Mummert; and four brothers-in-law: Paul Saalsaa, Ordean Olson, Myron Erickson, and Milford Homb.
Marvis was a member of Grace Lutheran Church in Darlington, its Women of ELCA, and quilting group. She was also a member of Darlington Homemakers Club and Darlington Sewing Club. Marvis was an avid gardener, especially flowers.
She will be fondly remembered and sadly missed by her family and friends.Memorial services will be held Saturday, June 4, 2011 at 11:00 A.M. at Grace Lutheran Church, 1302 Clay Street in Darlington, with Rev. Luke S. Smetters of Wiota Lutheran Church officiating.
Burial will be in Union Grove Cemetery in Darlington.
A visitation will be held Saturday 10:00 a.m. until time of services at Grace Lutheran Church.
Erickson Funeral Home in Darlington is serving the family.

Carolyn Kay Waelti, 63, of Delavan, died Saturday, June 24, 2006, at Aurora Lakeland Medical Center.
She was born Jan. 11, 1943, in Darlington, the daughter of LaVerne and Marvis (nee Abraham) Carpenter.
She married Gerald Waelti on Sept. 2, 1961, in Darlington. She was employed as an administrative assistant at the Wisconsin Center for the Blind and Visually Impaired in Janesville.
She was a member of the United Federation of Dolls Club and was a member and very actively involved with the United Church of Christ Congregational.
She is survived by her husband, Jerry of Delavan; three daughters, Lisa (Brian) Fountaine of Dousman, Heidi (Scott) Terpstra of Delavan and Heather Waelti of Watertown; one son, Mark (Yukari) Waelti of North Hollywood, Calif.; four grandchildren, Aaron and Kayla Fountaine of Dousman and Emma and Colin Terpstra of Delavan; and her parents, Laverne and Marvis Carpenter of Darlington.

Gregory E. Carpenter, age 55, of Cuba City, passed away Wednesday, Aug. 10, 2011, at Southwest Health Center in Platteville, after a battle with cancer.

He was born Feb. 20, 1956, in Monroe, the son of Orville and Lorene (Gill) Carpenter. Greg was affectionately known as "Monk" to his friends. He grew up in Gratiot, and graduated from Black Hawk High School in 1975. After graduation, Greg worked at the Black Hawk Junior High and Elementary Schools in Gratiot as a custodian. He also worked for Micro Switch in Galena, Ill., and Barber Coleman in Darlington, before ending his working career at ITW Shakeproof in Darlington.

Greg is survived by three brothers, Robert (Debbie) Carpenter of Monroe, Michael Carpenter of Madison, and Clifford (Juanita) Carpenter of Prairie du Chien; a nephew, Chad Carpenter of Monroe; three nieces, Carrie Carpenter and Heather Paffel both of Monroe, and Megan Carpenter of Prairie du Chien; six great-nephews; four great-nieces; good friends, Bruce Stietz and Carol Lee, Tim Ditzworth and Jewel McNett, Mike Pandow, and many others who visited him during his illness.

He was preceded in death by his parents; maternal grandparents, William "Earl" and Edith Gill; and paternal grandparents, Ernest and Winifred Carpenter.

Greg was an avid golfer and loved to hit the casino whenever he could. He truly enjoyed spending time with his friends. Greg will be sadly missed and fondly remembered by all who knew him.

Funeral services will be held Monday, Aug. 15, 2011, at 11 a.m. at DARLINGTON UNITED METHODIST CHURCH, 546 Main St. (Park Place) in Darlington, with the Rev. Larry Hakes officiating. Burial will be in Gratiot M.E. Cemetery in rural Gratiot. A visitation will be held Sunday, Aug. 14, 2011, from 2 p.m. until 5 p.m. at ERICKSON FUNERAL HOME, 508 Main St. (Park Place) in Darlington and Monday from 10 a.m. until the time of service at the church.

Bonnie Carpenter, age 83, of Wautoma, passed away early Friday morning, August 5, 2016 at Silver Lake Haven in Wautoma.
She was born March 30, 1933 in Middleton, TN, the daughter of James and Effie (Antwine) Brady. She married Lawrence Carpenter Jr. on June 25, 1954 in Milburn, IL. He preceded her in death on August 13, 2005.
Bonnie spent her early years working on the family farm in Etowah, Arkansas as a sharecropper’s daughter. In the early 1950’s, she moved north with her sister Dot and settled in Antioch, Il. where she met her future husband. Bonnie and Larry resided in Bristol, WI during that time she was employed as a machine operator with Goodyear Tire Co. for 20 years. In 1980, they retired to Wautoma. She belonged to the Wautoma Homemakers.
She was survived by her daughter, 6 grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren, 3 sisters and one brother.In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by one son, Michael Carpenter in 1986; her parents; three sisters, Johnnie Pearl, Mary Jane and Mavis; and by three brothers, Donald, Doyle and Terry.
