3606. Benjamin Carpenter

The Graves of Benjamin and his wife Thankful (Thompson) Carpenter were
originally located at the Carpenter Homestead and moved to the Perryville
Church Cemetery some time after 1880. This information was provided by
John F. Chandler (jchbn@cuvmb.cc.columbia.edu) and supported by the
Genweb Rhode Island Cemetery Transcription Project data base.

Subject:    [CARPENTER] Carpenters of South Kingstown, RI
Over the long weekend, I had the opportunity to visit Rhode Island, nominally to spend time at the beach.  While there, I managed to squeeze in a trip to the Perryville Church Cemetery (historic cemetery #47 of South Kingstown), and I located the gravestones of Benjamin and Thankful Carpenter.  (It wasn't easy -- the stones are of marble and considerably weathered, and Benjamin's has fallen over and is half overgrown with wild thyme.)  I knew they were supposed to be there because they are listed in the RI Cemetery Database, but it's a far different thing to see them directly, and, besides, I've heard two dissenting reports that gave different dates from those in the database.  At any rate, I can now confirm that the database is correct for these and some other Carpenter stones that I saw there.  What I saw:
Benjamin Carpenter, died 1840 Sep 18, aged 76 his wife Thankful T. Carpenter, died 1826 Dec 27, aged 57
[This Benjamin was probably the son of Thomas Carpenter who died in Exeter, RI, in 1815, and whose estate was administered by "Benjamin Carpenter of South Kingstown".  This Thomas in turn is rumored to be the same Thomas whose birth is entered in the West Greenwich vital records as 1738 Aug 3.]
Benjamin Carpenter, [who happens to be their son, but is buried in a  different area] died 1869 Jul 11, aged 62y 8m 25d his wife Sarah Carpenter, died 1875 Sep 15, aged 62y 9m 29d some offspring of this pair which I didn't write down (it was getting   dark) all on one monument:
Thomas A. Carpenter, born 1836 Feb 14, died 1911 Aug 16
his wife Olympia I. Kerr, born 1842 Jul 19, died 1919 May 18
their son William B. Carpenter, born 1861 Jul 20, died 1932 Nov 29
Hezekiah Willard, 1862-1936
his wife Mary N. Carpenter, [evidently daughter of Thomas] 1864-1957
I hope this helps someone.             John Chandler

Hello:
I am a new subscriber to the Carpenter mailing list and joined this group
because it appears most are serious Genealogists.
I, as well as other members of my wife's family,  have been researching
our branch of the Carpenter tree for some time and have hit the
proverbial brick wall. I have recently had the privilege to work  with
some of your members in Rhode Island, who have given me a lot of support
in trying to locate the ancestors of one Benjamine Carpenter. This
gentleman's family has been vary allusive, and I now need your help.
The facts as we have them today are :
Benjamin Carpenter was born Abt. 1764 in Coventry, Kent County, RI and
died September 18, 1840 in South Kingstown, Washington County, RI.  He
married Freelove Bailey abt 1795, daughter of Samuel Bailey and Robe
Webb. She was Born January 5, 1778 in Coventry, Kent County, RI. Benjamin
was buried in  thePerryville Church Cemetery, South Kingstown, Washington
County, RI according to the Rhode Island Cemetery Transcription Project.
Benjamine and Freelove had nine children, all born in South Kingstown, as
follows:
1. Sarah b. abt 1798, m. (unknown) Caswell
2. Peleg b. October 30, 1800, d. August 21,1865 in Clinton Twp. Wyoming
County, PA, m. Lydia Colvin.
3. George b. Abt 1801
4. Oliver b. Abt. 1803, m. Selinda White Abt. 1825
5. William b. Abt 1804
6. Mary b. Abt 1805
7. Samuel b. Abt 1807
8. Freelove b. Abt. 1809, m. John Bailey
9. Benjamin (possibly Benjamen) b. Abt 1813
Benjamine appears in the 1790  census of South Kingstown along with
severial other Carpenter Head  of Households by name:  Ephraim, James,
Jeremiah, Jeremiah Jun., another Jeremiah Jun., Jonathan, Joseph, another
Joseph, Stephen, and Thomas.
In the 1800 census Benjamin appears again with james, Jeremiah and his
son Jeremiah Jun., Stephen, Thomas, and a new individual one Solomon
Carpenter.
It is believed that Benjamin is a decedent of William of Rehoboth,MA but
may in fact be the descendants of Samuel who started the third Carpenter
branch in Pennsylvania, the son of John the Sheriff,  of Robert, of
Stephen,  of Robert,  of William the son of William of Homme, thus
accounting for why Benjamin's children moved to Clinton Twp, Wyoming
County, PA after his died in 1840.
Any assistance would be appreciated

Unfortunately, there are two Benjamins at work here.  The one who was
buried in the Perryville Church Cemetery having died in 1840 was the
husband of Thankful Carpenter who died in 1826 and was also buried
there, as you can discover by looking in the same database (the
relationships do not appear in the on-line index, though, so you have to
go to RI or find someone there to look such things up).  Actually, the
graves of this pair were moved to the Perryville Church Cemetery
sometime after 1880, according to a note in the database (they were
originally buried at the Carpenter homestead).  The estimated birth in
1764 goes along with the gravestone, which records Benjamin's age at
death as 76.  The other Benjamin, whose wife was named Freelove, could
have been born a bit later, as some other posters have suggested.
As for the vital records in South Kingstown, forget it.  They were very
poorly kept in the early 1800's, and neither Benjamin's family appears
in these records.
sigh...

I think the census records also belong to the Benjamin who died in 1840
and whose wife was named Thankful.  The 1800 tally, in particular, shows
four small children in the household, and the woman was over 26 years
old (i.e., not Freelove who was born in 1778).  If there is no other
evidence supporting the notion that Benjamin and Freelove had their
children in South Kingstown, I think you may need to widen the net a bit.
John Chandler.

I have , for some time, been looking for the ancestors of one Benjamin
Carpenter b. Abt. 1775 in Coventry, Rhode Island. I recently found that
after his wife,  Freelove Baily, gave birth to their first child, they
relocated ( Abt. 1801) to Clinton Twp, Wyoming County, Pennsylvania
(around Factoryville). Eventually, the family spread into Lackawanna
County and , pretty much remained there. In reviewing information about
this area I found there was a "Carpenter Town", with a "Carpenter
Cemetery" in Lackawanna County, PA east of Dalton. The cemetery is
located near the intersection of rt. 524 and 347 near highway 81.
Can any body help me with information about the town and/or who is buried
in the cemetery.

3607. John Carpenter

Number 1765 in the Carpenter Memorial on page 247.
Family on page 765 (#1598).  John was maried twice per the CM.

The separator between his first and second wife and their children is missing. So it appears that the following is a note for his daughter Mary. See: Page 765 under number 8097-d  X Mary :
Nicholas, No. 708. the grandfather of this family; died in Waterboro, Me. in 1822. He was the first settler in North Waterboro. which was then called Massabenic Plantation and settled all of his sons except Benjamin near him. John. his eldest son, No. 1765, was born in 1761 : died Oct. 1, 1848 : he married. 1st. Mary James of Kennebunk, Me., who died in July, 1848 ; he married, 2d, Hannah Hill and had four children. He is father of the foregoing family. The family do not appear in their order. ...
-Then the second wife's children are listed.

The Carpenter Memorial indicates children as:
Nicholas b. abt  1796/99, Paul b. abt 1795, Elisha James b. 1808, Enoch b. abt 1805, Anne b. abt 1802/10, Lydia b. abt 1812, Nathan b. abt 1814 (died young), Benjamin b. abt 1792/94, John b. abt 1800, Mary b. abt 1794.
This is in conflict with the record gleamed from the LDS records.
NOTE: I added an unknown Mary spouse to compare the difference from the LDS record and the Carpenter Memorial.  Nicholas stayed in the LDS record even though the data matches the CM.

Hi John, My Enoch is the son of John, listed on page 765 of the Carpenter
Memorial.  I thought that Emmeline was listed there, but after reading your
message I looked again and found she is not.  I was first given her name by an aunt of mine, and have since confirmed it through cemetery records found in the Saco, Maine library, and on the actual gravestone.  (Unfortunately, the genealogy section of the library was not open when I was there, and I have been unable to get back again.)  I have been unable to locate a last name for her anywhere else, and was hoping you might have something?   I was also very interested in your message on the Carpenter Museum in Rehoboth, MA.  That is only about an hour and a half from my home, so I may take a ride one day.  I will have to contact them and find out their hours, but I think it would be interesting.  My mother's family is also from that area, so I could possibly find more on them.   Thanks for any help you can give me, and good luck on the Carpenter 2000 Project.  Once I have my tree straightened out a little more, I'll try to send you the information I have.    Jean Carpenter.
