FSFT #  L71K-F1D

PARENTS:
Sala Blakeslee Sr  1764–1829 • K8MK-5K1
Marriage: Abt 1787  Litchfield, Litchfield, CT
Mary Merchant  1769–Deceased • LZXK-82N

William T Blakeslee was born in Plymouth Twp, Litchfield County, Connecticut in January of 1803, the eighth child born to Sala and Mary Merchant Blakeslee. In 1815, the blakeslee family began their trek westward toward Ohio. William married Harriet Carpenter in 1827 and together they raised twelve children. William was a farmer by occupation, and, according to a local history biography, was a man of irreproachable character untiring perseverance and sound judgment and reaped the merited reward of these qualities in all his undertakings.

After their marriage in Ashtabula, William and Harriet purchased a small tract of land in the woods, built a rude log cabin and began to clear a farm preparatory to cultivating the soil. This tract of land was near the present site of Ashtabula, OH. William soon had the small homestead under good cultivation and they continued to make it their home until the fall of 1845, at which time he sold this estate and moved to Illinois, making the trip by wagon through wild country. The family camped by the way at night and were six weeks on the road. They settled in the vicinity of Middle Grove, Knox County, IL. In 1864, William purchased 257 acres of land in Section 5, Fairview Twp, Fulton Co, IL. He moved his family onto the property and was successful in making a good living in his agricultural pursuits.

George Watson Blakeslee, son of William and Harriet, related this about his upbringing: "I bare a dim recollection of the old Ohio home and its surroundings Ashtabula was a very small place when we left the old homestead, but now it is a populous and growing city of many thousand inhabitants. We came in (to Illinois) above Peoria and located in Knox County near a place that was the called Shinntown, named in honor of old man Shinn, one of the pioneers of that county. Knox County then was almost one vast unbroke prairie and presented a most beautiful sight. The charm of the prairies of Illinois consisted in their extension, their green, flowery carpets, their undulating surfaces ad the skirts of forests whereby they were surrounded. Few habitations were in sight ad sometimes a person could travel for days and not see a human being. There were groves and groups of trees dispersed over the prairies and along Spoon River. In the summer the prairies were covered with tall coarse grass which in the fall assumed a yellow color, waving in the wind like a great crop of wheat or ripe corn. When the snow fell the deer and other animals retired into the forests and the the nost oppressive solitude would reign on the prairie, which occupied many square miles.

"We lived near Shinntown for ten years and then moved to the old Tim Morse place in Fulton County. It was in 1855 that we located in Fairview Township. My uncle, Sala Blakeslee, came to Illinois in 1834 settling in Knox County near old Shinntown right at the edge of the timberline. We lived in a rude cabin not far from Spoon River where deer, turkey, wolves, catamounts and even lynx could be seen quite often from our door. I counted 39 deer in my Uncle Sala's cornfield one winter morning. This is where we lived for 10 years.

"After we moved on this place, we lived in a house made of logs, notched and fastened in the sleepers with wooden pins--no nails being used in its construction. The floor was of split logs. We hauled wheat to Peoria and thought ourselves fortunate when we could get 50 cents a bushel, nearly half of which was consumed by staying overnight. Hogs were driven to Peoria and sold for $2 a hundred pounds. The first settlers of Knox and Fulton Counties generally owed all they raised to neighboring storekeepers, but by special arrangement they obtained a little money with which to pay their taxes. All grain was cut with a cradle and at first was tramped out with horses. I vividly remember seeing the wheat thrown in a pile and horses driven around it until the threshing was completed. Many of the first chimneys were made of sod, built on the outside of the log houses and all cooking was doe at an open fire, except in rare instances.

"My father, William, died at the old Tim Morse Place in 1880. He had accumulated some property when the bright promise of his future success was swallowed up by death. Some years prior to his death, his leg was caught in the cogwheels of an old ground horsepower and so badly crushed that it had to amputated. We took him to Cincinnati and had an artificial limb made for him, which was the first one ever seen in this section of county."

Nancy Whipple

NAME:  Nancy Whipple has been noted as the third wife and her b. was listed as 1791 and d. 1870.  She supposedly had one daughter named Sarah b. 6 Apr 1804.  It is possible that she was the FIRST wife?  This would change things!  More research needed!
