Due to its location between other pre-existing locations, the name of Middletown was adopted, but later changed to South Middletown to avoid confusion with another nearby location. Eventually the word "south" was dropped, giving the current name when the community became a village in 1848. The village was incorporated as a city in 1888.

3687. William Walter Carpenter

Compare RIN 28317 who is Walter.
Since I was researching Walter, and could not find him in the 1850-1880 Census, I assumed he died abt 1849/1850. I now know he died May of 1850. William Walter used his middle name and some searching has possibles under William, but more under Walter (see below) - so far nothing matching in spouse or children or location before 1850 US Census.

CENSUS: 1840 US Census - several possibilities from FamilySearch.org

William Cook Carpenter was raised by the Isaac Denton family in Wawayanda, N.Y. and lived there many years.
Col. William Cook Carpenter was a Justice of the Peace for 40 years, lived on the John M. Cash farm, owned the farm of Revolutionary War veteran Joshua Davis and in his later life bought a home in Ridgebury. He also served as a highway commissioner. His military rank was from his Civil War service, 1861-65, as a Colonel of the Third Brigade, New York National Guard.
The family tradition is that William Cook Carpenter had 23 children. His known children to his third wife, Emeline Carpenter, are:
(1) MARY E. -- born 1862; died July 1, 1865.
(2) ANNA B. -- born 1863; died July 2, 1865.

E-MAIL: Mon, 1 May 2000 From: Robin Carpenter
Hello Carpenters:
Here is another Carpenter burial I found on my recent visit to Orange County NY.
In Ridgebury, along Route 6, is the "Primitive Baptist Church of Brookfield," est. 1792, with a modest cemetery adjoining.  Brookfield was the old name for Ridgebury.  Strangely, this church seems to have NO parking area, and NO directly useful path-or-walkway access from the road.  Yet the church itself seems very well maintained, and the grass is neatly trimmed.
The cemetery, on the other hand, is a mess...with trash around and broken and fallen stones common.
In the cemetery of the Primitive Baptist Church is found "Abigail, the wife of Benjamin Carpenter, died June 14(?), 1836."  I don't know which Benjamin this Abigail is the wife of.
(Also in this cemetery is Mary the wife of Holloway Stephens d. 4/19/1812 aged 38.  I noted this Stephens burial only because Holloway Stephens was an abutting neighbor to my Carman Carpenter in Minisink.  There is no particular Carpenter meaning to it...but there it is in case someone out there has some interest or connection.)
Robin.

Hello All:
Ruttenber & Clark's "History of Orange County" NY refers (pp.680, 684) to a Col. William C. Carpenter owning a farm in Wawayanda, "...about a mile and a half south of Brookfield..." in the mid 1800s.  ... (partial)
Robin C.
MORE: 3 Apr 2001  Thanks, John and Ida for your responses.  I now recognize this line as among the antecedents of Raymond George Carpenter.
In case it's of peripheral interest for you, synopsis of the 1798 tax lists describes the house of John Knapp (30x26, 6 windows, in good condition, value $300) adjoining Joshua Davis...and says Col William C. Carpenter was later the owner of the Davis house.  The Davis property was "a stone and a wooden house in good condition, the stone size 30x35 feet, one floor, four windows, the wooden house size 24x18 feet, one window one floor valuation $367.50".
I realize I'm a bit more interested in this "locational" stuff than most others...but there it is.
Robin
