Hi John,
I saw the Carpenter Cousins Website online and wanted to update you on the family tree. I found that there was another sister to George, Higbie, and Amanda Melvina Carpenter. Eliza Snow Carpenter. She married an Edwin Hillyer.
I also found the exact birth date of John Carpenter and his date and place of death. He is buried in Jamaica, Queens, New York – I assume Old Prospect Cemetery with many of the Carpenters – but I cannot confirm that. His obituary just mentions burial in Jamaica, New York. He is not in Old Springfield Cemetery. He has nothing to do with Orange County, New York. John also served in the War of 1812.
Also, he married Mary Mayo’s sister Elizabeth after Mary died. They had a daughter, Louise Mary Carpenter who married a John Hartt.
All this info is in the attached document to update the Carpenter Cousin Descendants. Since it is in Word, perhaps it can be cut and pasted. I hope this does not foul up the numbers you assigned to each individual.
I created the descendants from Increase Carpenter and down. I came across other information for other descendants of his in the process.
Regards,
Brian

I attached John Carpenter’s obit, death record, and Muster Park Card for the War of 1812.
Correction for John Carpenter’s date of birth and date of death; born 28 February 1799 and died 23 September 1843 at 67 Orchard Street in New York City. Buried in Jamaica Long Island, New York – not sure exactly where in Jamaica. Perhaps you have an idea – I think it is possible that it was Prospect Cemetery. I know it was not Springfield Cemetery.

COMMENTS: by Gene Zubrinsky
The 1855 New York State census record of James and Mary Carpenter’s household informs us that William H.’s father had then been a Brooklyn merchant for the previous six years and, before that, had lived in Manhattan from at least 1839 (daughter Serena 16 in 1855, b. N.Y. County [Manhattan]). Moreover, James's first wife, Mary (Ward), died in Manhattan in 1837 (obit in Manhattan Newspaper).
It is therefore appropriate to exclude Sing Sing, Westchester County, and Newburg and Minisink, both in adjacent Orange County, as residential locations of William H.’s father, James Carpenter.

NOTE:  Errors in his submission have been fixed as cited below and elsewhere.

xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx Newer notes follow - these take priority xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

BIRTH:
Clearly born in New York, but his actual birth date and place have not been found.
The 1855 state census gives James’s birthplace as New York County (i.e., Manhattan); that of 1865 has it as Queens, which could mean Jamaica. Perhaps Manhattan should be mentioned as a possibility. Per Gene Zubrinsky.

MARRIAGE:
He is clearly married by 1825, and maybe as early as about 1818/1820, to Mary Ward who died in 1837.
He marries again to Mary Ann Jube in 1838.

Mary Ward

NAME:
Sarah Wood or Mary Ward? Per son Cornelius his mother was Mary Ward.
Gene Zubrinsky writes in an email dated 29 Mar 2019:
...
James’s first wife was not Sarah Wood but Mary Ward:
“DIED ...
On Wednesday morning [2 Aug. 1837], after a lingering illness, Mrs. MARY, wife of Mr. James Carpenter and daughter of Israel Ward, deceased, of Westchester County, New York, in the 32nd year of her age"
Citation: New York Spectator, Thursday, 3 August 1837, Vol: XL, Issue 46, page 2, image at genealogybank.com
...
; I have a chart confirming that Wednesday was 2 Aug. 1837). Son Cornelius’s death certificate identifies his mother as Mary Ward and gives her birthplace as Ossining (Sing Sing) (Cornelius Adriance Carpenter, "New York, New York City Municipal Deaths, 1795-1949" —  FamilySearch.org ). It seems likely that a submitter to the Carpenter genealogy confused James’s residence with his first wife’s birthplace. Israel Ward is said to have died at Sing Sing in 1820 (The American Biographical Sketch Book - William HUNT (Publisher, at Albany.) - Google Books ); no probate record found.

PARENT:
Israel Ward is said to have married a daughter of John Rossell (The American Biographical Sketch Book - William HUNT (Publisher, at Albany.) - Google Books ). A fragmentary online posting names Israel’s wife as Sarah Rossel (Israel Ward (1763 - d.) - Genealogy ). This is unconfirmed, but if accurate, it might explain how the Carpenter genealogy got wrong both the forename and surname of James’s (first) wife: while her name wasn’t Sarah, perhaps her mother’s was; and Ward morphs easily into Wood. The Seventh Presbyterian Church of Jesus Christ was organized on March 27, 1818, by Rev. Elihu V. Baldwin, D. D., in the home of William Badoe, and the first house of worship was located on Sheriff Street, near Broome. In 1842, a new church was built, as designed by Napoleon Le Brun. For more than twenty years the church was known as "Dr. Hatfield's Church," due to the pastorate of the Rev. Edwin F. Hatfield, D.D., who led the congregation from 1835 until he resigned in February 1856 to become pastor of the North Presbyterian Church. For many years, Seventh Presbyterian Church had the largest Sunday school in the United States. On February 4, 1934, the Seventh Presbyterian Church had its last service, after which it merged into the Church of the Sea and Land on Market and Henry Streets.  ...

Lucretia Carpenter Lowell was older than her husband NPL (per death record) and she simply matched his age in the various census records. She still outlived him. She was likely the daughter of Elizabeth "Betsey" Smith and John Carpenter.

HI John, glad to reconnect with you! My Lucretia was born in New Ashford,Ma.  in 1816  (she was married to Napoleon B Lowell.)  he was the son of Diantha Simmons and John Lowell  He died 10/28/1862 she died in Pittsfield Mass of stomach cancer. I have that  date somewhere. Lucretia had a brother Nathan I believe (in the 1865  state census I find Lucretia's daughter Cornelia  living with him After Napoleon had passed away.)also in the same household I found John Carpenter and his wife Elizabeth both 70 also living with Nathan So I suspect that this is Lucretia's parents. I know that John was born in NY State I think, Hoosick NY and His wife may be Elizabeth (Betsey) Smith from Tolland Connecticut. Do you know if my suspicions are correct? I am trying to find out about this line of Carpenters can you add or help? I am also trying to connect John Lowell with the Lowell family from the Boston area. The sticking point for me is who was John Lowell's father/mother/ From his dad on I think I can document , of course I would also love to find out who John and Elizabeth's parents are, but I've been on Ancestry and have a dead end?  Thank you for whatever help you can be! Also is there a carpenter  group or association? or others who may be able to help? THANK YOU! My.ra ,  I am Me, My dad Ralph Lowell, His dad James Warren Lowell,b. MASS>, his dad John Lowell,,, his dad Napoleon and his mom Lucretia Carpenter.

Dropsy: An old term for the swelling of soft tissues due to the accumulation of excess water.
In years gone by, a person might have been said to have dropsy. Today one would be more descriptive and specify the cause. Thus, the person might have edema due to congestive heart failure .
Edema is often more prominent in the lower legs and feet toward the end of the day as a result of pooling of fluid from the upright position usually maintained during the day. Upon awakening from sleeping, people can have swelling around the eyes referred to as periorbital edema.
The Middle English dropesie came through the Old French hydropsie from the Greek hydrops which in turn came from the Greek "hydro" meaning water.

MILITARY: Civil War - Union

Lowell, Napoleon B.
BATTLE UNIT NAME: 37th Regiment, Massachusetts Infantry
SIDE: Union
COMPANY: B & K
SOLDIER'S RANK IN: Private
SOLDIER'S RANK OUT: Private
ALTERNATE NAME:
FILM NUMBER: M544 ROLL 24
PLAQUE NUMBER:
NOTES:
-----------------
COMMENT:
William T. Carpenter served in Company B and his second wife Mary A. Lowell was probably related to NBL as a sister. Two other Carpenters served in the same regiment but in different companies. Probably not closely related. They are 1) Carpenter, Albert H. of Company I and 2) Carpenter, George of Company H.
SEE ALSO:

The regiment was formed in September 1862 at Camp Briggs under Major Oliver Edwards and served until the end of the war in April 1865. Companies A, B, and C were Zouaves units known as the "Tremont Zouaves" under the command of Capt. C.S. Bird. Their uniforms consisted of a dark blue jacket with red trim, a long red wool sash, chasseur trousers of dark blue wool, a red stocking fez cap, and white canvas leggings.

Page 61-63: The 37th Regiment was mustered into service on 30 August 1862 with companies B, C, D, F, G, and H filled. Companies A, E, I and J were filled and mustered into service on 2 Sept 1862. Company K, with mostly Irish recruits and some relatively experienced soldiers from other companies was filled and mustered into service on 4 Sept 1862.
Company B was commanded by Captain Franklin W. Pease of Lee.
Company K was commanded by Captain Peter Dooley of Cheshire.
Page 87-88: Cherry Run (likely Maryland) on 23 October 1862 - a sick soldier from the 10th Regiment of MA was killed when the wagon he was in rolled off the road. His body was awaiting retrieval on the side of the road, when the 37th Regiment marched by. They had not gone very many miles when they were ordered to return on the same highway, past the same dead body back to their previous camp. Four more days were passed by in days of discomfort, due to a cold rain-storm setting in and drenching the Regiment who were without tents and many without wool blankets. All had a rubber blankets (aka rubberized ground tarps).
On Monday the 27th of October, the Regiment marched forth and that night reached Williamsport. That night the a frost hardened the soaked ground. On the 28th many sick men were ordered to permanent hospitals nearby.
While no movement was made on 28 October 1862, the Regiment with the rest of the Brigade (two or three regiments)
returned to the old camp at Downsville on the morning of the 29th where a thorough inspection was made in.
COMMENT:
This means likely that NBL was one of the sick due to the weather and died in route or at the unnamed permanent military hospital mentioned.

DEATH:  need - He likely died of sickness in a military camp.

Oh, I  saw some reference to Calvin someplace but not associated with Lucretia. but i bet they are related. Hi I didnt send this good! I have been doing research! Found Calvin Carpenter died 19 Aug 1864. He died of Typhoid, in Philidelphia Pa. He was in the army. 1st Mass Calvary co K this Calvin is buried in Center cemetery in Lanesborough wfe listed as Jane Eliza Carpenter, Maiden name Roberts.  i found them in the state census 1860  they had a child named Sanford age 8, then I found her in a later census in I think Pittsfield. So I would guess this is Lucrretias brother? It also lists John ans Elizabeth Carpenter as his parents   M
