BURIAL:
Buried Lot # 652, Angelica Cemetary, Angelica, NY.
CARPENTER, SAMUEL  Pound Master, 1836, 44; highway Commissioner, 1837.  Lot 652.  CARPENTER, SUSAN A.  Lot 652.

So far, the research does not show that Samuel ever farmed.  In 1836 his
occupation is listed as Pound Paster. In 1844 he is the Highway Commissioner,
the 1850 census states his occupation as a blacksmith.  Samuel's house
was still standing on the main street of Angelica when we visited in
1998.  It has at least three additions but there is a map at the Belmont,
NY courthouse that shows the original shape of the house.... Source:

4221. David Howell Carpenter

NOTE:
"David H. Carpenter, a native of Elmira, Chemung County removed with his
father's family to Angelica, in 1814, and about 1819 to Black Creek, in
this town, where the family were the first settlers.  After attaining his
majority, he and his brother Ellison, bought a piece of wild land about a
mile distant from the old homestead: But Ellison soon after sold his
interest, leaving David to occupy it alone.  At the age of about
thirty-four or thirty-five he married Miss Elizabeth Warner of Angelica.
by whom he had eight children. One of whom died when a year or two old.
Later in life he became financially envolved and lost most of his
property in satisfying the demands of his creditors.  Being a man of
irritable temper this made a lasting impression on his mind and
character.  In April, 1863, he had some difficulty with a young man named
Timothy SaGregory, whom he shot, inflicting a slight wound in the face,
for which he was tried in July of the same year, convicted and sentenced
to three years imprisonment at Auburn.  He was discharged shortly
previous to his term on account of good behavior.
On September 25, 1868, he shot and killed his brother Ellison, with whom he
was living, while the latter was in bed.
He was arrested and taken to Angelica on the
26th and committed on the 28th.  He was brought to trial at Belmont the
25th of the following February and after a trial of two days was
convicted and sentenced to be hung on Friday, April 16th, 1869, which
sentence was carried into effect at the time designated."

MISC: 1814 - Removed with his family from Elmira, NY to Angelica, NY.
1819 - His family moved into West Almond, NY and settled on Black Creek.
Also known as "Hote" or "Uncle Hote".
BET. 1830 - 1860 resided on Farm, Twp  4, Range 1, Lot #24.
David was b. in Elmira, NY.  He removed with his father, mother and
siblings to Allegany  NY (to what is now known as Angelica, NY) in the
year 1814 when he was just eight years old.  They farmed a large portion
of land(about 100 acres) in the town of  Angelica for about five years.
On the 16th of November, 1830 David and his brother Richard Ellison
bought seventy acres of wooded and undeveloped land.  They cleared and
farmed the land  until a few years later Richard E. sold his interest.
This became the David Howell Carpenter family farm.  It was located about
one and a half miles North of his father, Richard Carpenter's farm which
was on Common Rd. West Almond, NY.  It was directly East of his uncle,
William Smith Carpenter's farm.  The actual location is; Township 4,
Range 1, Lot #24.

NEWSPAPER: ARTICLE FROM THE CUBA TRUE PATRIOT, FRIDAY, OCTOBER 2, 1868
Fiendish Murder!  A most brutal murder was committed in the town of West
Almond on the evening of Friday last, 25th inst., the particulars of
which, as we learn them, are as follows;
Mr. R. E. Carpenter, a bachelor, owns a farm in the town of West Almond,
upon which he resided, and had living with him a brother, David H.
Carpenter, and a son of David H., Judson, a young man of about 23 years
of age.  Friday afternoon the two brothers went to Angelica to a
political meeting, the young man going with them a short distance to a
neighbor's.-- These three comprised the whole family.
The young man Judson returned home near night, and was doing chores when
the brothers came home about dusk.  Having finished the chores,  he went
again to another neighbors a few rods distant, leaving his uncle and his
father at home.
About ten o'clock he again went home, and upon entering the house, in
which there was no light at that time, heard heavy breathing in his
uncles room, and at about the same time saw a light coming toward the
house from the direction of still another neighbors's.   He asked his
uncle R. E. Carpenter, what was the matter.  His uncle replied, "Uncle
Hote shot me, and I am dying."  The brother, David H. was called Hote,
and  Uncle Hote.  At this time there was no person in the house but young
Carpenter and his uncle.   The light which Judson had seen was now near
the house.  and he called to those with the light to hurry and come in
with the light as soon as they could.  When they came with the light, the
young man saw that they were two neighbors, who were accompanied by his
father. Uncle Hote, and also saw his uncle lying on the floor in front of
his bed.  His uncle again repeated that Uncle Hote had shot him and that
he was dying.  Upon examination, it was found that the dying man was shot
in the shoulder, the ball passing entirely through, and it was afterward
ascertained that a large artery was cut off by the ball.  One of these
neighbors immediately started for more help. and before he returned the
wounded man was dead.  "Uncle Hote", or David H. Carpenter, had, it
appears, shot his brother and then went to the house of these neighbors
who came with the light, and told them there were robbers in his brothers
house and they had shot his brother, and had shot at him as he left the
house.
Circumstances, as well as the assertion of the dying man, pointed to
David H. Carpenter as the murderer, and he was kept in the house during
the night while one of the neighbors went to Angelica and procured a
warrant, and a officer to arrest the supposed murderer.  A coroner's
inquest was held upon the body the next day, and a verdict rendered that
the deceased came to his death by the hand of his brother David H.
Carpenter.  The accused had his examination at Angelica Monday, and was
held for trial.  The evidence against him was overwhelming, and he is now
in jail awaiting a trial date.

NOTE: Chemung county was created in 1836 from parts of Tioga county, NY.
Tioga county was created in 1791 from part of Montgomery county, NY.

Dear John,
I have received new information as to the birth dates of the David H.
Carpenter family, Allegany Co. NY ...
My brother in law, Lynn Carpenter, researched the original papers at the
National Archives in Robert Carpenter's C. W.pension file.  He found the
family birth record page taken from the Carpenter Family  Bible and
notarized in Butler Co. NE, 1911.
It was sworn to have been written by Elizabeth Carpenter and signed by he
son Charles Carpenter.  This was used by the Gov. to establish his
birthdate.
Birthdates:
Elizabeth Warner Carpenter; b. Aug. 6, 1819, Erie, PA        Mother
Elizabeth Carpenter                b. Feb. 14, 1840    West Almond, NY
Dau.

"             Son
*Viola Victoria Carpenter       b. Oct  1,  1857             "
"            Dau.
*Viola Victoria is a major change.  In Geo. Morton's "History of Allegany Co.
he states that David and Elizabeth had 8 children, one dying between the age
of 1 and 2 yrs.  He states that he "thinks" this was a son.  He was not sure of
the birth squence but guessed it to be the 2nd child, born after Elizabeth.
I had this written as a male child born abt. 1840/41.  That should be
removed.   ...
Regards, Dawn.
Info supplied by Dawn Carpenter at < DawnCarpenter@msn.com >.

Elizabeth Warner

The 1850 census lists the Carpenter farm as dwelling #45, The Common farm
(Robert Common married Elizabeth's sister, Philena Warner) as #46, and
Parley Warner's farm as # 51, (Parley was Elizabeth's father.)  So it
appears as if the
Common family and the Carpenter family lived next  to each other at this
time.  The 1860 West Almond map shows the Warner farm about  a mile and a
half north of the Carpenter farm.

Signs of times, and doctrinan advocate and monitor, 1902, Vol. 70, p. 381
Kezia L. Brees died at the residence of her son, A. B. Brees, May 16th, 1902, aged 85 years, 9 months and 12 days. She was born August 4th, 1816, in Chemung Co., N. Y., whence she emigrated to the territory of Michigan, with her father's family, and other relatives, about 1831. She was married to Solomon M. Brees, Feb. 10th, 1841. When about sixteen years old she experienced a hope in Christ, and joined the Baptist church, to which faith she has unwaveringly held ever since, and when the division occured she remained steadfast in the original faith of the Baptists, needing no improvements in methods or means of salvation upon the merit of Christ, and redemption by his blood. She always appreciated sound doctrine and order in the church, and endeavoured to set an example of humility and love, yet faithful and forgiving. She died with no malice toward those whom she had thought were inconsiderate and ???sh. Her last words breathed the sentiment of peaceful regard for all on earth.
Elder Jacob Gander spoke comfortingly at her funeral.

Subject: Hello

I can't afford the DNA testing and from what I've seen on the page it's mostly for male testing and not us females. I hope you can help me. I've traced many of my ;ines going bacl to the 1400's and 1600's but no luck with the Carpenter's in my line.Thank you for any help you can give me.

I am related to RUFUS B. CARPENTER who was born 1816 in New York. I'd like to find out where his parents came from. My Mom thinks they came from France but Ive been told by others that they could be German, Swiss, or English.. He later moved to Indiana where he married FRANCES WADELL/TWADELL (I've seen it spelled both ways, the latter is on the marriage records. Sep 24, 1839 in Jennings County, Indiana. I last found them in Dickinson County Kansas. One of the family stories is one of the older boys died fighting in the Civil War. My Mom told me she has the gun that the Army sent back to the family along with his clothes. The family had to burn the clothes and passed the gun down.
I have no idea what happened to the 2 girls. I don't know if they died young or married and moved somewhere else, or what. My great grand parents and their two children ended up in Colorado. Two of his brothers went to Washington state and another brother either stayed in Kansas or went some place else. It seems after the family ended up in Denver they lost touch with some of the others in the family.

Children of RUFUS CARPENTER and FRANCES WADELL/TWADELL are:
i.JOHN W. CARPENTER, b. 1843, Marion, Jennings, Indiana. Found out he is the one that died in the Civil War.
ii.WILLIAM A. CARPENTER, b. 1845, Marion, Jennings, Indiana.
iii.MARTHA A. CARPENTER, b. 1848, Marion, Jennings, Indiana.
iv.FRANCES CARPENTER, b. 1854, Marion, Jennings, Indiana.
***3.v.DAVID BYRON CARPENTER, b. May 4, 1855, Marion, Jennings, Indiana; d. Jun 25, 1929, Denver, Denver, Colorado. (my line)
vi.RUFUS A. CARPENTER, b. 1857, Marion, Jennings, Indiana.
vii.HIRAM CARPENTER, b. 1860, Marion, Jennings, Indiana; d. May 15, 1932, Everett, Clallam, Washington.
viii.WINFIELD SCOTT CARPENTER, b. 1861, Marion, Jennings, Indiana; d. Dec 10, 1925, Skagit County, Washington.
