4563. Derick Sibley

Information from 1988 IGI (7450365/0).  His birth appears in
Woodstock Vital Records, p.212.  "The History of the Town of
Montpelier...For the First One Hundred and Two Years" [Miss A.M.
Hemenway, publisher, Montpelier, VT, 1882, pps. 292, 307-309]
indicates Derick published "The Freeman's Press", a "Democratic
newspaper" and the second to be published in Montpelier, VT,
commencing with the first issue 25 Aug 1809 and continuing until
sometime after the end of the War of 1812, about 1815.  "It [was]
interesting as giving many quaint views of life and times in those
early days, the advertisements, especially, possessing much
interest.  The paper was devoted mainly to national politics, only a
small space being given to local and State matters."  In "Early
Rochester Records", Vol.2: Derick is listed as a member of the
Pioneer Society of Rochester, arriving from Woodstock, CT, in 1816
(G.S.017,896).  The same film includes newspaper copies of 1st
Presby- terian Church records: under date of May 3, 1818, "Derick
Sibley from the church in Mont Pelier [sic], VT.  Dismissed May 3,
1825. Brick Church."  A note in "Historical & Statistical Gazeteer
of NY State, 1860", indicates he and his brother, Levi,
obtained the first newspaper published in Monroe county, "The
Rochester Gazette", in 1821.  They changed the name to "The Monroe
Republican", with Levi as publisher and Derick as editor.  The year
of his first marriage is estimated based on him appearing in
Rochester alone in 1816, wife Nabby being mentioned as coming with
him from Montpelier, Vermont, in 1818, and only [apparently]
daughter being born in Dec, 1818].  Later in same church records:
"Removed to Cincinnati, OH" [no date given-- probably between
1846-1850].  His name appears in Revolutionary War widow's pension
file for claim initiated by his mother, Irene Carpenter Sibley,
about 1840.  Information regarding second marriage from "10,000
Vital Records of Western NY," p.206---gives date, place of
marriage, name of second wife, death date for first wife.  Both
items from "Geneva Gazette"; item also states he was "former editor
of the Republican".
1827: he appears in the first Rochester City Directory; auctioneer
living on Hughes Street.
1830, 1840 census indexes: could not find a listing for Derick---?
1850 census, OH Hamilton Cincinnati 2nd Ward, p.129 (p.257): 661/609
Derrick Sibley, age 62, dealer in periodicals, born CT; with second
wife; daughter, Carrie; Diane Wales, age 19, born NY [a
married daughter?] (G.S. 444,680).
1860 census, OH Hamilton Millcreek, p.163: age 72, born CT; with
wife, living in household of married daughter, son-in-law
(G.S.803,980).
Death date: "Index of Death & Marriage Notices Appearing in the
Cincinnati Daily Gazette, 1827-1881", which states his age was 88
[977.178/V27h SDReg].
G.S.2,023,914, Item 2: death date 12 Nov 1875, recorded 13 Nov 1875,
age 88, p.5.
A JOURNALIST.

Abby Risley

First name, date* and place of death, husband's name from "Geneva
Gazette", quoted in "10,000 Vital Records of Western NY",
p.206; surname, birth state, place of burial from Cem. Records
of Monroe, NY, giving CT connections.  1st Presbyterian Church
records printed in newspaper contain following following entry:
"Nabby Sibley, from the church in Mont Pelier [sic], VT.  Dismissed
Nov. 17, 1827" [just prior to her death].  Death date* appeared in
newspaper: "Abby Sibley, wife of Derick, age 37" (G.S.017,896). She
does not appear in 1993 IGI or Addendum; not listed in Woodstock
records. [* Death date in first source listed as 26 Dec 1827---may
be burial date?]  Checked Barbour Index for CT: only Abbey\Abigail
Risleys mentioned are in East Hartford, have death dates
inconsistent with my information (G.S. 002,947).  Cem.
microfiche states she died 29 Nov 1827 at age 37; there are no other
Risleys in Mt. Hope Cem..  There are no Risleys in Walpole or
Montpelier records; thus it appears marriage probably took place
somewhere in CT.

Rachael Roberts

Name, state of origin [OH, which disagrees with 1850 census] from
"10,000 Vital Records of Western NY", p.206.
1850 census, OH Hamilton Cincinnati 2nd Ward, p.129: Rachael R.
Sibley, age 50 [birthyear calculated from same], born NY; with
husband; daughter, Carrie; Diana Wales (G.S.444,680).
1860 census, OH Hamilton Millcreek: age 60, born N.Y.; with husband,
married daughter and son-in-law, grandchild (G.S.803,980).
There is no entry for her in "Index of Death...Notices Appearing in
the Cincinnati Daily Gazette, 1827-1881", suggesting either she
didn't die there, or lived longer than 1881.

4564. Sophia Sibley

Birthdate, place from 1988 IGI (7450365/0).  Birth appears in
Woodstock Vital Records, p.212.  A publication of the Pioneer
Society of MI ["Pioneer Collections: Reports of Counties",
pp.419ff] indicates Sophia was one of the original 49 members of The
First Protestant Society of Detroit when it was formally reorganized
23 Jan 1825.  [In 1823, that organization obtained the services of
"Rev. Mr. Moore, another missionary from the Board of Missions".  My
guess is that this exposure may very well be what gave Sophia's son,
Edwin, the idea which resulted in his going to HA as a printer
and secular member of that mission with the A.B.C.F.M. (American
Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions)].  Register of Church
Members, First Presbyterian Church of Detroit [which was formed from
the foregoing church] shows that Sophia was the 39th member of the
church listed; that she was received by letter 2 Feb 1826; page of
record, 9; and that she was dismissed 10 Aug 1829 to Rochester, New
York (G.S.959,144).  Death date, burial information from Mt. Hope
Cem. Records (G.S.6,048,646-5) which indicate she died at age
50; she is listed as "Sophia Sibley Seymour"; neither husband is
buried in this Cem..

Oren Hall

According to the book, "Genealogy of Peter Cushman Jones and
Cornelia Hall Jones", "Very little is known of the Hall family, but
quite a lot of material has been prepared about the Sibley family,
the maternal ancestors of Mr. Edwin Oscar Hall, father of Cornelia
Hall Jones---which is here given copied from a book prepared by
Derick Sibley, an uncle of Mr. E. O. Hall.  The Hall family have no
records of the Williams family on their mother's side, Sarah
Williams Hall, beyond the names of her father and mother" [which the
author does not include!!] [p.32].
Walpole records indicate he was a chaisemaker [which is defined as
"a two- wheeled, one-horse vehicle for two Persons, having a calash
(folding) top, and the body usually hung on long leather straps;
(or) a light, four-wheeled carriage, usually open", per Funk &
Wagnalls]. Walpole town records show name as "Oren"--appears for
first time in poll tax records, 1807 (G.S.15,332).  Year of birth
estimated, based on age 20 being age when NH law required
a man to begin paying poll tax.
1810 census, NH, Cheshire, Walpole, p.248: "OWEN" Hall,
head of household, with 1 male under 10 [Edwin Oscar, born in 1810];
1 male 16-26 [Oren]; 1 male 26-45; 2 females under 10 [Sophia Edna,
b. 1808 + ?]; 3 females 16-26 (G.S.218,684). [APPARENTLY THERE WERE
OTHER FAMILY MEMBERS LIVING WITH THEM AT THIS TIME.]  His name
appears variously in other records as "OREN" and "ORIN" but there is
no one with that name listed in the 1810 census. [Chapter titled
"Genealogy of the Sibley Family", written by Derick Sibley and
quoted in "Genealogy of Peter Cushman Jones & Cornelia Hall Jones",
refers to him once as "Owen" and once as "Oren"; predominance in
most records is "Oren" or some spelling thereof!]
1814: Living in Drewsville, NH, near Walpole, with interest in saw
mill.
1814: Oren Hall chosen highway supervisor in Langdon, 8 Mar 1814
["Genealogy of the Town of Langdon", by Frank Burnside Kingsbury
(internet)].
1816: Sold land in Walpole.
1817: Oren and Sophia were involved in a land transaction in
Canandaigua.
1820 census: NY Ontario Canandaigua, p.212: "Orrin" Hall, with 2
males under 10 [Edwin would have been 9, with Oct birthday, Asa, 2];
1 male 18-26; 1 male 26-45 [Orrin]; 1 female 10-16 [Sophia would
have been 11]; 1 female 16-26; 1 female 26-45 [mother Sophia would
have been 29]; Orrin listed in "manufacturers" column (G.S.193,717).
[UNACCOUNTED FOR: 1 male 18-26--Asa Hall?; 1 female 16-26---his wife?]
Searched all Ontario County Cem. records in SLC; could find no
entry for Oren.  He is not buried in Mt. Hope, Rochester, either.
Derick Sibley's chapter in Peter C. Jones' book, p.41, says Oren
died in Canandaigua, NY, December 1819, but he must have been
a year off, per the above 1820 census, where he is listed.
While there is an entry in 1830 census as follows, it is apparent
that this is another person, since Sophia appears to have remarried
in 1822 [NY Ontario Bloomfield, p.150: "Orrin" Hall, with 1 male
10-15; 1 male 30-40; 1 female 10-15; 1 female 30-40; 1 female 70-80
(G.S.017,161).]
There are Oren Halls in IGI: one with father Benajah Hall/mother
Ruth Francis
has wrong wife; one with father Stephen Hall/mother Mary Crittenden
has no wife listed [in archives].
Brent checked "Families of Ancient New Haven" comp. by Donald Lines
Jacobus in SLC [974.68  D2j]; no reference to either Oren or Asa
Hall  10/98.
A chaisemaker.

10173. Asa Sibley Hall

All information from chapter written by Derick Sibley in "Genealogy
of Peter Cushman Jones and Cornelia Hall Jones", p.41
(G.S.1,697,553); place of birth assumed, based on movement of
parents indicated in notes on father, Oren Hall.  Sibley's
information was that Asa "died in MI in 1849 from disease
contracted during the Mexican War.  Never married" [ibid, p.41].

Joseph Willard Seymour

Information for him and his father's family from "A History of the
Seymour Family: Descendants of Richard Seymour of Hartford,
CT for Six Generations", George Dudley Seymour & Donald
Lines Jacobus, comp., New Haven, CT, 1939, pp.117-118 (G.S.496,633);
source states he had 5 children, doesn't say how many by each wife.
Death reported in Hudson Star & Times, 30 Jan 1867.
1820 census, NY Ontario Canandaigua, p.225: 1 male 0-10 [John]; 1
male 26-45 [Joseph]; 1 female 10-16 [could not be their child--just
married 4 years]; 1 female 16-26 [Dorcas]; 1 engaged in agriculture
(G.S.193,717).
1825: The second regular newspaper, the "MI Herald", was
started in Detroit by "Chipman and Seymour" ["Historic MI",
Vol.II, George N. Fuller, editor, National Historical Assn., Inc.,
1924, p.874].  Could this have been Joseph W. Seymour?
1827: Joseph W. Seymour, MI Territory, petitioner---?
1830 census, NY Madison Smithfield, p.417: FILM ILLEGIBLE due to
damage; don't know if this is the right person [probably not].
1833: Joseph W. Seymour, MI Territory, petitioner---?
1837 Detroit City Directory:  no Seymours.
1840 census, NY Monroe Rochester 2nd Ward, p.295: 1 male 10-15
[Theodore], 1 male 15-20 [Orren]; 1 male 50-60 [Joseph]; 1 female
15-20 [Mary], 1 female 40-50 [Sophia] (G.S.017,193).
[1849-1850 Rochester City Directory: NO Joseph Seymour listed;
apparently had gone to MO already, since his daughter was
married there in 1845 [see below].
[1848-1850 index, Canada Ontario: DOES NOT APPEAR under any
spelling, even though his son, Orren, had a child born in Canada in
1847.]
[1850 census, NY: checked 2 entries in Washtenaw, 1 in Wayne,
Canton: all Jos. Seymours born in England; also checked MI, WI, IA,
OH, IN index entries.]
1850 census, MO Carroll 15th District, p.3: Joseph W. Seymore [sic],
age 68, printer, born Miss [wrong---probably meant MA]; living
with family of Thomas Dobbins, farmer--no known connection
(G.S.443,603).  Apparently, his daughter, Mary, was married five
years earlier in the largest town of the neighboring county because
she must have been living with Joseph at the time.
1860: not in Carroll County, MO.
1867: death information from Hudson Star & Times, 30 Jan 1867, p. 1,
col.4, which indicates he died of pneumonia "in the 85th year of his
age".
[1870 census, WI St Croix Hudson, p.63: his son, T.S. Seymour and
wife Esther appear---this must have been where he was living at time
of death three years earlier.]
Not in archives (G.S.1,275,051).
A printer.

10176. Theodore S. Seymour

Information from Hudson Star Observer biographical and vital
statistics index
(G.S.1,292,201); also "Foster Genealogy", p.307 [see father-in-law's
notes]
which gave his birthdate, "Res., Milford, Iowa, and Duluth, Minn."
1840 census, NY Monroe Rochester 2nd Ward: appears he is the boy
listed as
being age 10-15 [would have been 12].
1856-1864: "Names closely associated with this paper [Hudson
Chronicle, later
Hudson Star Observer] were: ....T.S. Seymour" (from "Historic
Hudson, 1840-
1940", Willis Miller, Hudson, July 1940, p.31.
1864: T.S. Seymour was city clerk 10 Jun 1864 ("Hudson Tales
Retold", Willis
Miller, Star-Observer Printing, May 1980, p.38).  Same source, p.64,
mentions
Seymour as one of the pioneer names in the Willow River Cem..
1864: letter in previous source (p.38) refers to writer going up "to
Mr. (Theodore) Seymour's [in Hudson] last evening to see if they had
heard from Ira (Foster)", Esther Foster's brother, who was
apparently then serving in Co. A, 44th Reg. WI Volunteers at
Nashville, Tennessee.
1870 census, WI St Croix Hudson, p.63 (247/256): Seymour, T. S., age
39, bookkeeper, real property $2000; personal, $1000; born MI;
with wife, Esther, age 35, born MI; Willie Foster, 6; Ella
Foster, 3; both children born WI [apparently her brother
Andrew's two oldest children] (G.S.553, 236).
1870 census, IA Dickinson Okobogi, p.601: HE ALSO APPEARS living in
a hotel,
age 41, merchant, real estate value $3,000, personal property
$4,000; born MI; his brothers-in-law, Andrew & Ira Foster, listed in
same hotel with him (G.S.545,887).
1880 census, IA Dickinson Okobogi Twp, Milford town, p. 15: age 47,
miller,
born MI; father b. MA, mother b. NH; with wife, Esther
(G.S.1,254,337).
1900 census, IA Dickinson Milford: searched with no luck
(G.S.1,240,429).
1900 census, WI St Croix Hudson (G.S.1,241,815): couldn't find any
Seymours in Hudson City---ordered Soundex [S-560] for WI,
Minnesota, Iowa--no
Theodore or Esther.
Information from Peter Cushman Jones family history seems to
indicate that Theodore and his wife moved to Duluth, Minnesota---may
have died there.
A Bookkeeper

Esther Foster

Information from same sources as husband; also, 1850 census, MI
Washtenaw
Scio, which provided parents' names, confirmed her birthyear [age 16
in this
census], born MI, with brothers Andrew and Ira who were mentioned in
newspaper index as being her brothers (G.S.443,580).  Individual
ordinances from IGI, which stated "no parents listed", so not sealed
to them; endowment may not be done either: "pre-1970"; Rel: Ruth C.
Cornia.
1870 census, WI St Croix Hudson:
1880 census, IA Dickinson Milford: age 46, born MI; father b. RI,
mother b. MA.

4566. Levi Waite Sibley

Information from archive sheet with him as parent (G.S.1,275,064);
place of death from sheet incorrect, as he is listed in probate
index for Rochester, NY, not NH; apparently, all children
born in NY also, as Levi purchased land in Rochester, New
York, in 1823.  He is listed as a teacher in one of four Sabbath
schools established in Rochester in 1822 (G.S.017,896: Early
Rochester Records).  He is also listed in the first Rochester City
Directory (1827) as a printer living on Fitzhugh Street.
Levi's brother, Derick, wrote that this child and the two younger
than he were born in Rochester, NY; however, the family
appears in the Walpole census in 1810, the year after the sixth
child's birth, so this seems unlikely.
A Journalist.

Nancy Ann Remington

Archive record (G.S.1,275,064) derived from Strong Family history,
which
apparently made a number of erroneous assumptions about year, place
of birth,
marriage; locations shown from IGI; MA corroborates state
of birth
shown in 1850 census, NY Monroe Rochester 3rd Ward, p.96,
where she
appears, age 48, living with married daughter, Amanda Hoyt, latter's
husband,
child, and George and Levi Sibley (G.S.017,106).

10177. Augustus Hurlburt Sibley

1850 census, NY Monroe Rochester, p.90: age 24, bookkeeper, born
NY, single, living in boarding house (G.S.017,106).
IGI shows guess-timated place for marriage;
another entry indicates Rochester.  Back of archive record
gives name of second wife, no other information.

10178. Amanda Maria Sibley

1850 census, NY Monroe Rochester 3rd Ward: age 22, with husband,
child
[Harriet M., 6/12, born NY], mother, two brothers.

John F. Hoyt

1850 census, NY Monroe Rochester 3rd Ward, p.96: age 33 [or 22?],
birthyear calculated from former, merchant, born CT; with wife,
child, mother-in-law, two brothers-in-law (G.S.017,106).
A merchant.

10179. William Wisner Sibley

IGI gives place of marriage; not certain of accuracy.  Death,
burial information from Cem. record.

10181. George Ainsworth Sibley

1850 census, NY Monroe Rochester 3rd Ward: age 14, born NY; with
mother, married sister Amanda Hoyt and family.  Grantee index
for same locality shows he was married to Sophia W.
Marriage does not appear in 1993 IGI or IGI Addendum.

10182. Levi Edwin Sibley

1850 census, NY Monroe Rochester 3rd Ward: age 10, born NY; with
mother, married sister Amanda Hoyt and family.

4567. Mary Ann Sibley

Archive record for her as parent did not give parents' names; says
she was "of Rochester", but 1850 census says she was born in N.H.,
which is consistent with brother, Levi, being born there.  Her
second daughter's middle name was Irene, strengthening connection to
Asa and Irene, and she would have been 18 when her husband began
boarding with Asa's family.  Later, chapter entitled "Genealogy of
the Sibley Family", written by her brother, Derick, and included in
"Genealogy of Peter Cushman Jones and Cornelia Hall Jones", states
she was the fifth child in Asa and Irene's family (G.S. 1,697,553,
p.40).
1850 census, NY Monroe Rochester, p.377: age 45, born NH;
with husband, two youngest children (G.S.803,980).
1860 census, NY Monroe Rochester 3rd Ward, p.189: age 55, b.MA; with
husband, daughter, Bertha, two others [listed in husband's notes]
(G.S.803,782).
1870 census, NY Monroe Rochester 3rd Ward, p.26: age 65, b. NH; with
husband; daughter, Bertha; servant (G.S.552,468).
Birth, death dates from Mt. Hope Cem. records (G.S.6,048,646-5).

Edwin Scrantom

Archive record (G.S.1,275,042); birthplace listed as Rochester,
which is in error, as Rochester newspaper lists him as a member of
the Pioneer Society of that city: "Edwin ScrantoM, from CT, 1812".
Hamlet ScrantoM, from Durham, Middlesex, CT, is listed as arriving
in 1812 also (G.S.017,896), and archive record lists him as Edwin's
father.  Edwin swore an affidavit which is included in Asa Sibley's
pension file, stating he was a boarder with Asa and his family from
spring, 1822, on in Rochester, NY.  [Archive record spells
surname "Scranton".]
1849-50 Rochester City Directory lists him as an auction and
commission merchant and general agent with office at 25 Buffalo,
home at 267 Buffalo (G.S.6,044,408-4).
1850 census, NY Monroe Rochester 8th Ward, p.377: age 47, merchant,
value of property: $15,400, born CT; with wife, daughters Beulah &
Bertha (G.S.017,107).
1859 Rochester City Directory: auction & commission merchant, 25
Buffalo; h. 92 Fitzhugh; advertisement states business established
1830 (G.S.6,044,413-4).
1860 census, NY Monroe Rochester 3rd Ward, p.189: age
55, auctioneer, b. MA; with wife; daughter, Bertha; Cora Sabin, 10,
b.NY; John Harrell, 19, servant, born NY (G.S.803,782).
1870 census, NY Monroe Rochester, 3rd Ward, p.26: age 67, commission
merchant, real property $45,000, personal $12,000, b.CT; with wife;
daughter, Bertha; one domestic servant (G.S.552,468).
Mt. Hope Cem. records show Edwin, wife, five children who died
as infants buried there (G.S.6,048,646-5).

10186. Hamlet Edwin Scrantom

Information from Mt Hope Cem. records, which indicate he died at
age 7 months (G.S.6,048,646-5).  [No birth or death dates were
provided for any of the children who died as infants---birth order
not known either---all are guesstimates for the purposes of sealing
to parents, whose names WERE stated in Cem. record.]

10187. Beulah Mary Scrantom

1850 census: age 15, born N.Y.

10188. Edwin Levi Scrantom

Died at 9 months, per Cem. record.

10189. Edwina Jane Scrantom

Died at 10 Weeks, per Cem. record.

10190. Clifford Sibley Scrantom

Died at 3 years, 10 months, per Cem. record.

10191. Melford Clark Scrantom

Died at 10 months, per Cem. record.

10192. Bertha Sibley Scrantom

1850 census: age 1, b.NY.
1860 census: age 12, b.NY.
1870 census: age 20, b.NY.

John:
Thanks for your note.  However, I don't have verified documentation on the Carpenter Genealogy.  We have included the Carpenter Name in my wife's family history because my wife's great grandfather, William Henry Bigelow (1863 - 1901) was married to Zimri's Daughter, Mary Elizabeth Carpenter.  She was his first wife, and she died around age 35.  My information regarding Zimri Carpenter was found at:

http://www.ci.keene.nh.us/library/vitalstatistics/births1ad.htm#C

If you'd like to know more about Mary Elizabeth Carpenter, I could probably help, but beyond her, I'm not much of a resource.  Best of luck with your searches.

Hello Neil & Roger,
Does your Zimri Carpenter of Keene, Cheshire, NH descend from Nathan & Mary (Riggs) Carpenter of Ashford, Windham, CT?   This is a Rehoboth Carpenter line.
If so, would you two be willing to share the information?
Let me know.

Amos Stratton

The Carpenter Memorial has his father as Stephen. However ...
FAMILY: Amos Stratton family based on
notes from Early Settlers of Rutland Vermont "Isaac Stratton served in the
Revolution from Grenwich, MA and moved to Clarendon, VT circa 1783." p 357...
The first of our Strattons to be born in Ruland VT was Amos
the eldest son of Isaac and  and Abigail (Wheeler) Stratton
b Rutland VT. Their third son Calvin E and Mary Anne Esty were married 1837
at Mendon[clueless Mendon; am a southernor after all].
we descend from their sixth son Hiram who married Lucy Maria Kennerston of
Pittsford 1 Jan 1874.
I concluded my line is Diane Gibbs (Stratton) Gambrell (Weston Bowen
Stratton, Hiram Asa Stratton, Hiram Stratton, Amos  and Zilpah (Carpenter)
Stratton, Stephen Carpenter, Benjamin Carpenter).
