Father of William Carpenter-584 (b. abt 1605)

Notes

5106. Thomas Francis Carpenter

The Hon. Francis Carpenter was the son of Comfort A. Carpenter,
but not by his wife, Widow Elizabeth Smith.  His father educated
him and made him a legal heir by an Act of the Legislature, and
he became a very prominent man in the state of ,RI.

Extracts taken from Reminiscences of the ,RI Bar
written by Abraham Payne, Esq.: "On the 14th day of September,
1840, I entered the office of Gen. Thomas F. Carpenter as a
student at law.  I swept the office and made the fires and did
all the errands now usually expected of an office boy.  On
entering the office, he came in and laying down his green
satchel upon the table, greeted me with much dignity and
courtesy, asking me to be seated.   He commenced the
conversation by explaining to me that a lawyer should make
himself familiar with the Bible, and taking the book, he read
some passages in confirmation of his advice.  He said that it
was his daily habit to read a chapter in the original Greek in
his house every morning.  He then proceeded to impress upon me
the importance of treating everything that should pass in the
office as strictly confidential, remarking that in his safe
there were wills and conveyances, which,  if known, would
startle the community.    He was of middle height and had a very
large head.   In his intercourse with clients, his students and
brethren of the bar, he was always courteous,  and when
appearing before the courts he was a model of dignity and
deference to the tribunal.

While I was in his office, he rarely looked into a law book and
yet he was in one sense the best lawyer that I have ever known.
In his early life he must have been a careful student of the
common law.      He attained a competent acquaintance with
equity jurisprudence the practice of which was then recent in
the court of ,RI.  He never gave any bad advice.   No
person got into a foolish lawsuit who consulted General
Carpenter.  It was his custom to say to a client who was anxious
to get his grievances into court, `No doubt but that you have a
perfectly good case, but there are some technical difficulties
in your way, and I think it is for your interest to make a
settlement.'  In this way he seldom lost a cause for which he
appeared in court, and the reputation of success largely
increased the number of his clients.

General Carpenter was a Democrat, and was several times a
candidate for governor and member of Congress.     The Whigs
being at the time the strongest party he was consequently
defeated,  but not on the ground of honesty and ability to fill
the offices acceptably.

His charges were always moderate, and to persons unable to pay
even those charges, his services were frequently and cheerfully
rendered.  When he came to an argument, his manner of speaking
was formal and precise.  He indulged in neither wit nor humor
and never made any exhibition of rhetoric; but he knew what to
say to a ,RI jury and a ,RI court.

He stood well as a common lawyer and excelled in criminal cases.

Mr. Carpenter always spoke in the highest terms of the Carpenter
family; he was much interested in the genealogical history and
rendered assistance and encouragement to the compiler.2  SOUR S203

is the only one mentioned in the above record.

Thomas Levitt Haskill

He was a farmer in Stratford, VT until 1812 when he sold his farm and not long
after (abt 1813 or 1814) took his residence on Hanover Plains near the college.
He died there.

His family is on page 600 (#1022).

Lived in Cornish from about 1784 to 1786 when they moved to Stratford, VT.
Thence to Hanover in 1796.  He was in the merchantile business until he became
an invalid and moved to Hanover.  He died there on Sept. 23, 1851.  His remains
were deposited in the Carpenter Lot on the burying ground on College Plain.
He died aged 67 years, 6 months and 9 days.

The calculator with PAF gives age at death 67 years, 6 months and 11 days.

Anna Stafford Ormsted

DIED: June 8, 1875, aged 78 years, 4 months and 28 days.  This calculates out
to a birth date of 11 Jan 1797.  Records has her as a "Miss" before marriage.

The PAF calulation on her husband's birth and death dates is 2 days off
tombstone records.  It is logical to assume the same margin of error exists
with her birth date and PAF calculations.  Thus born abt 11 Jan 1797 is
appropiate.

10982. Harvey Carpenter

Number 5958 in the Carpenter Memorial on page 600.
He left home (his parents house in VT) on the morning of Nov. 22, 1842
for Boston where he served a three year course of study at Kimball's Union
academy, NH and entered Dartmouth college in 1842 and was appointed by
President Lord as monitor of his class and was honorably discharged from the
same college in the same year in consequence of his poor health.  He engaged in
more active duties of the mercantile trade, which business he was in until his
death.  Among his papers, we find the following:
"Boston, May 24, 1881.  As I intend to leave Boston, the city of my adoption, I
hope that when I die the circumstances may be such that the last verse in my
poem on Mt. Auburn cemetery may prove true in relation to my remains."  The
verse he referred to reads thus: "With kindred's dust e'er unforgot, Let mine
repose when life hath fled, Within thy gates dear hallowed spot, 'Mt. Auburn,
City of the dead.'"

5126. John Carpenter

Hi John,
I'm attaching a short writeup about John Carpenter of Williamstown VT, who was the father of James B. Carpenter of St. Johnsbury, VT.  James was my great-great-grandfather.
...
Best, Steve Whitelaw

John Carpenter was born about 1792, according to his gravestone.  (He died January 7, 1846, at age 53).   His older brothers and sisters and his younger brother were all born in Pomfret, Vermont, so it is likely that John was born in Pomfret as well.  There is no listing of his birth in the Vermont Vital Records, but there are many events around that time that are not listed in the Vermont Vital Records (families were not required by law to register births at that time).

John's parents were Nathaniel Carpenter and Anna (Nancy) Walcott.  Nathaniel died on March 5, 1796, at age 40, leaving his wife with at least seven, and probably eight, children. John was only four at the time, so he was too young to have been apprenticed out like his older brothers and sisters.  It is likely that John remained with his mother and his older sister Nancy, who was only 9 years old when her father died.

On April 28, 1800, when John would have been eight and his sister Nancy 13, their mother married James Thwing in Pomfret.  James's wife Hannah had died on January 1, 1796, just two months before Nathaniel Carpenter died.  James had 10 children when his wife died, but the two oldest, Prisca and Susannah were 19 and 18, and so they would have been old enough to look after their younger brothers and sisters.  After James and Nancy were married, they moved to nearby Barre, taking young John and possibly his older sister Nancy with them.

John's older sister Nancy married Elisha Flint in Williamstown, Vermont on June 19, 1806, when John would have been about 13.  John is not listed in a household of his own in the 1810 census, but he would have been only about 17.  It is possible that he was living at the time with his sister Nancy and her husband, as the census (which did not give the names of any but the head of the household) lists their family as having a male aged between 16 and 26 in the household.

On September 2, 1812, John Carpenter took the freeman's oath in Williamstown, Vermont.  To take the oath, the person was required to be at least 21 years old, but if John's gravestone is correct, he should have been only 20 at most.  He could have been fudging a little on his age, or his gravestone could be incorrect (as was often the case in those days).

In 1812, John was listed in the records of the War of 1812 as having served for six months in 1812, and then for several days in June, 1813.

John Carpenter married Clarissa Hawes on December 2, 1813, in Williamstown, Orange County, Vermont.  They were married by Mr. Enoch Burnham, J.P.

Notes:
His existence and date of death and marriage place and date are from
Vermont vital records.
His birth location is inferred from the birth records of his brothers and
sisters, who were born before and after him in Pomfret.  His birth date
is from his gravestove, which gives his age as 53 when he died in 1846.

Clarissa Hawes

Father:   William Hawes
Mother:   Sophia Hyde

John and Clarissa were married by the town clerk, whose name was Mr.
Burnham.  This could explain their son James' middle name.

She is listed in "Richard Hawes of Dorchester, Mass.", by Frank Mortimer
Hawes, 1932.  In the book (p. 95), the author says she was born probably
in Brookfield, Vt.

Death information is from her gravestone, personally visited by Alice
Eichholz in October, 1991.

10986. Charles Pinkney Carpenter

Birth date is from IGI.
Also from Vermont VR Index.
NAME:  Middle name is Pinkney or Pinckney or similar.

Theodocia

"Robinson" is apparently the name of her first husband, Augustus S.
Robinson, by whom she had at least one child, Martha T. Robinson, who
died 12 Oct 1845, ae 15 years, ll months.
On her gravestone, her name is spelled "Theodotia".

10987. Nancy Ann Carpenter

Her birth date and place are from the Williamstown VRs, vol. 2.  These
are in the Vermont public library.

Subject: Re: Carpenter Cousins Y-DNA Project - lineage update 52435 - on hold
Yes, I now know that the lineage shown is wrong. My Joel is Joel Monroe Carpenter, born circa 1785 in VT or Mass. My Joel is the one shown in the 1820 Census in Cambridge VT. In 1822 he moved with family to Gerry, Chautauqua Co. NY. He married circa 1810 Sophronia Wright (b. 1793 in Templeton, Mass). I suspect that they were divorced as Sophronia becomes head of household in Gerry, NY starting 1830. He appears to marry second wife Emily Greenleaf in 1841 in Chautauqua Co. NY and then moves to Wisconsin where he dies before 1849. (There is a land record from WI that is clearly him.) I believe that he was a War of 1812 veteran who served in the VT militia and hence the land grant.
The Joel born in Pomfret in 1795 is too young to have married Sophronia Wright in 1810, and an early record in Pomfret confirms that he was orphaned with guardian appointed at age 16 - 1811. He is the one that goes on to Minnesota in the records you identify below, and who has the son named Wheelock.
That leaves the question of who was my Joel's father? My best current theory is that he may be Barnard Carpenter, born in CT, son of the Barnard identified in the Beekman Patent papers. A record in Cambridge VT indicates that my Joel (with a David Carpenter, possibly brother?) acquired property from Barnard Carpenter in 1809. I need to do more research on site in northern VT and western NY!
I would be grateful for any thoughts and ideas.
Paul

Yes, thanks John. I actually had those pages previously. They identify a Barnard Carpenter, born 1760, son of Barnard born 1723 in Swansea MA, son of John born 1691 in Swansea. This was the John who was one of the subjects of Gene Zubrinsky’s research and publications a few years back. So the key for me is to prove that my Joel is indeed the son of Barnard Jr.

10998. Emily Adele Carpenter

In doing a little research on Emily, it turns out that her husband Hector Sharp, froze to death in January 1870 on a business trip to Minnesota from South Dakota where they were living!  (Being a native Minnesotan I understand this completely.) The whole family subsequently went west to Montana, Idaho and eastern Washington state.
