E-MAIL: Carpenter 2000 project Date: Mon, 05 Jul 1999
FROM: John W. Carpenter
Hi John,
I am a descendant of William of Rehoboth, MA.  My Aunt Ruby Austin did
research in the 1930-40's and found our Carpenter line to be the
following:
Noah (b. March 28, 1672)
Stephen (b.July 23, 1706)
(Deacon) Stephen (b. October 15, 1740)
Darius (b. January 19, 1783)
Daniel (b. 1809 -- all that is listed on his gravestone in Cheshire, MA)
George A. (b. March 07, 1840)
George E. (b. 1861)
Albert Edgar (b. June 19, 1886)  --- my Great Grandfather
I am excited to hear that you are working on compiling all the
information that you have gathered over the last 20 years.  My wife and
i have been working on it for a couple of years now and are up to 7,800
names in our tree!  I can just imagine the hours you have put in to have
over 45,000 names --  I would be interested in anything you have related
to my ancestors listed above.  In particular, the location of Stephen's
(b. 1706) gravesite.  If i can be of assistance on my line of
Carpenter's - please write back.  (DONE!)
Sincerely, John William Carpenter.
NOTE: John & his wife Debra provided the Descendants of this Daniel Carpenter.
I appreciate the effort they took to help!  JRC 5/2000.

John Carpenter (1806 - Unknown)
Be aware of the word "Potential" on photos and documents on the above web page.

Based on the 1790 to 1840 US Census - This seems to indicate that John Carpenter-20563 is not the right John Carpenter as father.

From 1790 to 1810 there is one John or Jonah in 1810. From 1820 to 1840 the pattern is two Johns.
The 1830 makes sense because John Carpenter-20567 is listed as having his first child in 1830 and 3 children – 2 males and 1 female by 1840.
The 1820 John in Dover is puzzling unless he is single about age 17.  NOPE 1776/1794

Number 8628 in the Carpenter Memorial on page 802.
Place of birth unknown.  He died when a young man.
NOTE: It is SPECULATION that this John Carpenter (son of John & Lucena (Thompson) Carpenter) who married Lois Grover.  But this is not proved.  See next.  See 1860 Census data below.
Per Pam White: Mother was "Anna" and father was "John Carpenter."

BIRTH:  Birth abt 1802 but 27 Mar 1804 claimed by a "confirmed source" NOTE Should be "unconfirmed source" - source not given, so it is speculative. See:
http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=peblood&id=I4011
He was born 1800 by the 1860 census, 1803 by the 1870 census, and 1804 b y the 1850 Census. An confirmed source claimed he was born 27 mar 1804 i n (Dover?) VT. Do not confuse with Deacon John Carpenter (1793-1880) w ho married Polly Warren and died in Guilford, VT.
NOTE: Later he referenced:
http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=gegenealogy&id=I15460
DEATH: 1 Oct 1880 but his wife is listed as a widow when she died on 17 Mar 1880.
If 1/10/1880 was used as death date and read wrong, then he died on 10 Jan 1880.  This is the reasonable explanation, but needs to be confirmed. But it is wrong.
WARNING: John Carpenter-8577, a Deacon, was born on 26 Feb 1793. He died on 1 Oct 1880. IE Not for this John Carpenter.

The following data supplied by Marque Carpenter on 29 Dec 2003.
Source: 1850 US Census Vermont, Windham County, Town of Guilford, Roll M432_929, John Carpenter living with wife Lois (age 42) and children.  His age is 46 thus being born Abt. 1803 in Madison, Vermont. Occupation: 1850, farmer.
John and Lois do not appear in the 1860 Census for Guilford.
MARRIAGE: . Marriage was found in Guilford Center town hall book "D" page 252
Married by J.P. Joseph Boydson to Lois Grover.
Record found in Town of Gulliford, Vermont BRD P.252

NOTE:  Vermont has a town called Madison Brook in Essex county.  This is near the NH border west of Route 3.

Subject: [CARPENTER] John CARPENTER of Guilford, VT
I am researching the CARPENTER family of Guilford, VT. Can you answer the following questions on John CARPENTER's family? I will eventually want to prove this information using published sources and may ask you about yours.
a.. When was he born (about 1790 to 1805)?
b.. When did he die?
c.. Did he marry Lois GROVER January 09, 1827 in Guilford , Windham, VT?
d.. Was she born LOIS GROVER 13 Sep 1808 in Guilford, Windham , VT? Did she die . 17 Mar 1880 in Halifax ,Windham, VT? Was she the daughter of Elijah GROVER and Lydia GALLUP?
e.. Was there a daughter Lydia CARPENTER born to John CARPENTER and Lois GROVER 29 Jun 1853 in Guilford,Windham,VT? If so, her father John would have been in his 50s or 60s.
f.. Did daughter Lydia die in 1867 (age 14) or did she marry Daniel CARY in 1868, move to MA and die after 1920?
g.. Who were John CARPENTER's parents?

John in NH.
The use of middle names seems fairly consistent in this family.
Olin appears to be the brother of John "Draper" Carpenter b. abt 1797/1804.  The 1860 census indicates age 60 which means born about 1800.
Lewis Elijah Carpenter b. 1830 is consistent with 1860 Census age 30 or born abt 1830.
John Draper Carpenter-24175 was born 12 Mar 1842/1844/1845 is consistent with the age 16 in the 1860 census this works out to be born abt 1844.
Mary Jeanett Carpenter-24173 was born in 1841 - you did not give the age from the 1860 census.  Age 18 or 19 would be consistent.
Lydia Lorne (Lydie) Carpenter-24992 was born about 4 Jul 1852 - you did not give age from the 1860 census.  Age 7 or 8 would be consistent.
Other children not mentioned except "other children 11 & 5?"  Nancy M. Carpenter-24176 was born in 1849 and would be about age 11 in 1860. The child age 5 or born about 1855 is missing.
All in all it is fairly consistent with this family.
Good find!

John,
How have you been? Have you ever identified the parents of John CARPENTER of Vermont who married Lois GROVER?
I saw a military record for a John CARPENTER who reenlisted 17 Sep 1832 age 28 in Boston. he was born in Danville, Caledonia, VT.  That would be a 1804 birthyear. Do you know this guy?
I didn't even realize that there was a standing army in 1832. What was going on then?

Mrs J. Carpenter 1808-1880 - Green River
-- Mrs Lois Carpenter, a charge of the town, through the neglect of hygeneic rules, and as a complication of wounds received last fall, has developed erysipelas. The disease had progressed so far before medical aid was called, that the bones of the hip were exposed to view as wax also the "socket" joint. Gangrene has set in, and all hopes of her life are despaired of.

When Lois Grover Carpenter died on 3/17/1880 she is listed as a widow so that means that John could not have died in Oct 1880 in Bennington.

Also it looks like Elijah (Lewis Elijah), Draper (John Draper), Jenett (Mary Jennett), Lydia, Charles (?? Lewis Elijah's son) are living with John and Olive Carpenter in 1860 and not with John and Lois.  My thoughts on this are the following possibilities:
1 - John and Lois or one of the children not in the 1860 census (Lois M., Catherine Janet, Nancy M.) are ill or in Nancy's case deceased and sent the children in the 1860 census to be with relatives.
2- I find it interesting that in 1860 census the children are in Woodford which is near Hoosick Falls as there always seems to be some connection to that area and the Carpenters and a connection has yet to be found.

Will keep searching for more answers and questions.
Pam

Asa P. Carpenter, retired farmer and teacher, resident on section 6, Croton Township, was born in Waterford, Caledonia Co., Vt., Sept. 2, 1802, and is the son of Asa and Erepta (Grow) Carpenter. His father was born in 1770, in Ashford, Conn., and died Sept. 10, 1826; he was a son of Jonah Carpenter, who came to American soon after the Pilgrims made their first settlement in Massachusetts. The mother of Mr. Carpenter was born in 1780, in Hartland, Vt., and died in 1862.

The father of Mr. Carpenter was a Congregational minister and gave his son a good available education. He commenced the vocation of teaching at the age of 18 years. He taught his first school in the town of Victor, Ontario Co., NY, in 1820. In 1824 he went to Canada. He was married Oct. 3, 1824, in Lewiston, Niagara Co., NY to Margaret, daughter of John and Catherine (Huff) Ulman. She was born April 27, 1789. Her father was born in 1754, in Lancaster, Pa., and died in 1833. Her mother was born about 1764, in Canajoharie, NY and died in 1835. Nine of twelve children born to Mr. and Mrs. Carpenter are living. Following are all their names in the order of birth: Joseph Warren, Alethia, John Grow, Henry Ulman (died of a wound in the army, and is buried at Alexandria, Va.), Margaret Ann, Asa and Erepta (twins), Benjamin, Charles Carrol (died by drowning) Elizabeth Catherine and Mary Jane. The latter were twins and Mary Jane is deceased.

Mr. Carpenter was exclusively occupied in teaching until 1853, when he came to Michigan. He bought 40 acres of land in Croton, Newaygo Co., and has added by purchase 80 acres more, where himself and wife now reside. The children have all scattered away to homes and interests of their own, except the son Benjamin, who lives upon a part of the homestead.

Mr. Carpenter has always been actively interested in politics, and records himself as an inflexible Republican. He has held the office of Town Clerk six years, Superintendent of the Poor seven years, has been Coroner of the county and Justice of the Peace 12 years, and has officiated as School Inspector most of the time since he settled in Croton. He has taken the New York Tribune 40 years. Himself and wife belong to the Congregational Church.
