Based on his marriage and death records, he was born in Winsted,CT, and he is found in the 1850 census there in the household of Luman Smith and Huldah Burr Smith. At first glance, it would be assumed that they are his parents, but both his marriage and death records indicate his father was named Orlow Smith as well, and his death record suggests his mother's maiden name was Holt. His mother's name is difficult to read on his 1873 marriage record.
