Subject: Others looking for Oxford
I checked The 1790 and 1800 Census today There is no town [called Oxford] in Grafton County in Grafton, or any other county in NH only "Orford, Grafton NH We are not alone. I did not check Orford for these people. I did find a Eli Carpenter head of House in 1790 and 1800 Census . I also checked "Inhabitants of NH 1776"by Emily S. Wilson pub by Hunterdon House,Lamberertville, NJ 1983" That book has Carpenters from Cheshire County, NH.
I am assuming you are referring to Orford, NH. If so, may I suggest that you take a look at their town web page: or contact their Town Clerk for specific answers to your questions: 353-4404 or townclerk@orfordnh.us

MORE:
An early resident of Orford, Dr. Eli Carpenter, lived on Lot 69 north of the present Clark house. When he came to town in 1780 his only pos· session was one horse. The next year he owned two horses and two cows. He was not credited in the Orford records with land until 1785 when he was taxed for an acre of plowing land and two acres of pasturage. Listed in the Orford Centennial Report as one of the town's earliest senlcrs, Dr. Eli Carpenter remained a resident for over thirty years. In 1798 his buildings were valued at five pounds. He owned four horses and three cows. He had cultivated more of his land by then, being taxed for two acres of tillage, six of mowing and six acres of pasture land. He seems to have enjoyed a moderate prosperity. Nevertheless hard times were coming for him. In 1805 he lost seven acres and one hundred fifteen rods out of lot 69. The land was set off to Bethuel Cross on execution in his favor against Dr. Carpenter whose wheat field was part of the land sacrificed to Mr. Cross. Thereafter Dr. Carpenter was taxed for eight acres of improved land, plus one horse and a cow. No buildings assessment appears under his name, although he continued to live on the premises. In 1808 he reo ccived $220 from Abiathar G. Britton for Lot 69 "that I now live on, except what was set off to Bethuel Cross." In 1841 Dr. Eli Carpenter's name is missing from the tax records. The next year Mr. Britton sold the Carpenter place "except all buildings on the premises" to John Kemp for $400: In 1836 Bethuel Cross sold his Carpenter land to John Kemp for $175. The fate of Dr. Carpenter's dwelling house is not known. There is no trace of it on the property today. Source : "Thanks to the Past " The story of Orfford,NH, by Alice Donan Hodgson Published 1965

COMMENT:
This brief on Dr. Eli Carpenter-17853 gives the impression that Dr. Eli lived past the 1810/1811 time period. His son Eli died in 1863. Could if be in the 1841/1842 time period the wife of Sr. Eli or the son Eli sold the property?
H’mm ... Eli Carpenter-17789, the son, moved to Homer, Cortland, NY in 1816 and was sole owner by 1835/1836 and he died there 14 Jul 1863.
Dr. Joel Ruggles Carpenter-17795 and his wife did not show up in Cortland County until documented in the 1850 US Census. Could it be that Dr. Carpenter missing in the 1841 Orford, Graton, NH tax record was the second Dr. Carpenter?

12877. Rosina B. Carpenter

DEATH: Died age 15.
It appears we have two Rosina Carpenters - Rosina B. (for Baker?) & Rosina – This similar to the two Joels in this family.
The find-a-grave gravestone pictures appears to show two sides of the headstone. Yet, looking carefully at it, it appears to be two different stones? That both died in their 15 year is a shame.

Rosina born May 2, 1777 Passed away April 1, 1792 Age 15 - Compare the following to this.

Looking for any information about the children of Dr. Joel Ruggles CARPENTER and his wife Beulah (BUTTERFIELD) CARPENTER. They were in Cortland Co. NY at the 1850 census. I am particularly interested in their daughter Mariva or Meriva CARPENTER, born c1826. Did she marry in Cortland Co. NY? Any leads on her after her enumeration in the 1850 census would be much appreciated.

Subject: Re: Carpenter link
I think the marriage record will work to link William to his parents if used maybe with census records. I take it that Huldah Pettis is a 2nd or 3rd wife?
I found the record of the Elijah Carpenter family in the CT town records on FamilySearch. They are in image 34 of 715 in Film # 007730722. I also found the marriage of Daniel Carpenter and Olive in the same records in image 66. That page has the marriage and the birth of the first two kids (James & Daniel) even though I have an index for 5. I flipped through that section of the film, but never saw the other 3 kids. I may have missed them or maybe because the last three were born in a different town. It looks like the marriage and first 2 kids were in Thompson. The information on the index doesn't say what exactly was being indexed. I usually find a GS Film number listed in the Document Information. I'm attaching a screen shot of the Thompson CT records.
