Margaret Carpenter was born August 26, 1787, but the location of birth is
unknown.  She is recorded in neither Ashford nor Landgrove.  I have been told
that she was born in Sandgate, VT but have been unable to substantiate this.
She died in White Creek, New York on November 22, 1837 and is buried in the
Woodlands Cemetery in nearby Cambridge, NY.
Margaret married Dr. Henry Gray on November 23, 1808.  He was born May 27,

Col Daniel Carpenter

Barre

Death:  Aug. 31, 1884
Greeley

Colorado, USA
son of William Barney Carpenter / Sarah Blodgett.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Veteran of the War of 1812
He received his early education in Barre, Washington Co., VT but quite early in life moved with his family to Canada. Upon finding the war with England imminent he then went to Genesse Co., NY, and from there enlisted in the War of 1812, first as a Wagoneer and later in the ranks. Daniel along with his brother Justin Carpenter served in the War of 1812, Daniel valiantly served through out the entire war and participated in a number of sanguinary engagements. He was fortunate in that he was not wounded.
After peace was restored he returned to Le Roy, Genesse Co., NY. He was one of six volunteers of his company of his company to enter active service on the Niagara frontier.
Shortly after the conclusion of his term of enlistment he removed to Richland Co., OH, where he was successfully engaged in merchandising for about 20 years, all the while farming in Iowa.
He still took active interest in military affairs and was made 1st Lieutenant of a company of the state militia while a resident of Richland Co., OH, and by successive promotions was advanced to the rank of Colonel of his regiment, remaining in that position for 3 years.
In April 1871, when he was 75 years of age, he went to Colorado with his sons and purchased the farm which was operated by Fred. G. Carpenter. He moved to Greeley about a year before he died 29 Aug 1884 at the age of 88 years. He is the only known soldier of the War of 1812 who found his last resting place in Colorado. In politics he was a Whig, and at one time was a candidate for representative in the party ticket.
Subject: Re: Fwd: Original Family Record - Justin & Elizabeth Brown Carpenter of Lexington, OH
John:
You are correct - it is a MARRIAGE certificate. The State of Delaware document reads, in part: "Whereas, application hath been made according to law, by Heinrich Utendorfer of the County of New Castle in the said State of Delaware, single man, and Mary Brown of the County of New Castle in the state aforesaid, single woman, to be joined together in the holy bonds of Matrimony...at Wilmington the Eleventh day of June in the year of our Lord, one thousand eight hundred and forty two..."
I've been in contact with a local history society in Franklin Township, Sauk County, WI where the six sons of Justin Carpenter of Lexington, OH established farms in the 1850's. According to the society's website, a large number of German immigrants also established farms in that township. A society volunteer/researcher indicated that it was not uncommon for the local German immigrants to interchange first/given names with middle names and to "Americanize" those names. So "Heinrich Utendorfer" became known as "George Heinrich Utendorfer" and then "George Henry Utendorfer" and "Mary Brown Utendorfer" used "Maria" - per her obituary and headstone - as her first name. The researcher did not offer any formal name-change documentation. (I'm wondering if "Brown" was originally "Braun".)
Subject: Re: Favor - Birthplace of My Great-Grandfather, John HiramCarpenter- 4
Hi John:
I finally have some breathing room and can pretty much put the "Birthplace of John Hiram Carpenter Issue" to rest. - It was Richland County, Ohio. If it was the wife who answered the questions of the census taker while the husband was tending to farm choses, you'd think she would remember if one of her eight living sons was not born in Ohio but in Illinois instead. Per the 1850 and 1860, the census reports for all children had recorded "Ohio" as their birthplaces.
You asked me to: 1) confirm the land purchases by Justin Carpenter-8729 in Richland County, Illinois, and, 2) offer my thoughts on Illinois land speculation in the mid-nineteenth century as described in the book image you sent.
...
As for land speculation. Justin could have used his second cousin, Daniel Carpenter, or any close friend(s) from western Richland County, Ohio, to act as his agent(s) in Illinois. The State of Illinois says that the Olney area in Richland County, Illinois, was settled by Ohio transplants, many from Richland County, hence the source of the name for the Illinois County. Reports must have relayed to Justin that all of the properties were unsuitable for farming because of poor drainage and extensive standing water. Thus, he probably just abandoned the venture.
An unanswered question remains: where did Justin and Elizabeth Carpenter, and their 8 living children, live from April 1843, when the Worthington Township farm was sold, and April 1844, when Justin purchased the Troy Township farm northwest of Lexington where he and Elizabeth lived out their remaining years? I won't lose any more sleep in trying to find an answer to that  question.
Thanks again for bringing clarity to the birthplace question. I'll be in touch with info on Justin-8739 and his family, and on his son, Daniel-135139 and his descendants.
Jim
LAND:  1830s  (from Jim)
20 July 1836  Grantor, Henry Mayfield; Grantee Justin Carpenter
100 acres in Worthington Township, Richland, Ohio
Recorded in Richland County, Ohio
LAND: 1840s
April 11, 1843    Justin & Elizabeth Carpenter sold 100 acres of land in Worthington Township, Richland County, OH, to George Maxted Miller. The sale price was $1,300. (Worthington Township is adjacent to Berlin Township, Knox County, where Elizabeth’s parents lived.)
April 11, 1843    Justin Carpenter purchased 120 acres of land in Bonpas Township, Richland County, IL from Georger Maxted Miller, the transaction took place in Richland County, OH. The deed was recorded in Richland County, IL, on November 23, 1843. The purchase price-$800.
                         E½ of NE¼ of Section 31, Town 3N and Range 14W – 80 acres in Bonpas Township
                          NE¼ of NE¼ of Section 5, Town 2N and Range 14W – 40 acres in Bonpas Township
April 13, 1843   Justin Carpenter purchased 160 acres of contiguous land in Olney and Madison Townships, Richland County, IL, from George Moses Miller and his wife; the transaction took place in Knox County, OH. Recorded in IL the same date as the other two. The purchase price was $500.
                          W½ of SW¼ of Section 27, Town 3N and Range 10E – 80 acres in Olney Township
                           W½ of NW¼ of Section 34, Town 3N and Range 10E – 80 acres in Madison Township
I've shown those four parcels as three white rectangles on the attached contemporary satellite image of the area south of Olney and USH 50 (the probable general route from central Ohio to central Illinois in the mid-19th century) Also on that attachment is a GLO abstract of the sale in 1853 by the BLM of the same 40 acre parcel in Bonpas Township that Justin Carpenter purchased from George Maxted Miller ten years previously.
16 April 1844 Grantor, Nathan Balding, et ux; Grantee, Justin Carpenter
80 acres in Troy Township, Richland County, Ohio
Recorded in Richland County, Ohio
21 June 1848 Grantor, Joseph David, et ux; Grantee, Justin Carpenter
35 acres & 52 sq. rods (35.325 acres) in Troy Township, Morrow County, Ohio
(Note – Troy Township became part of Morrow County on 01 Mar. 1848
Note 1 The 80 acre parcel in Troy Township was landlocked; the 35.325 acre parcel,
with a corner of each parcel touching, purchased four years later provided
access to the Lexington-Bucyrus Road.
Note 2 Justin and Elizabeth Brown Carpenter lived the remainder of their lives on these
properties. Thus only one residence, northwest of the Village of Lexington, was
their homestead after 16 April 1844.
Note 3 Morrow County plat maps show the two parcels remained in the immediate Justin
Carpenter family into the 1920’s ....
Item of Note: See the attached surveyor’s drawing, dated 1859, for 50 of the 100 acres in Section 33,
Worthington Township that JC-8739 sold in 1843, with the owner, and tax-payer, noted as “G.F.
Carpenter”; most probably the eldest son of JC-8739’s older brother, Colonel Daniel Carpenter.
2. 1857 Plat Map showing two (2) parcels owned by JC-8739, 80 acres labeled "J Carpenter" and 35.325 acres labeled "JC"; the two are adjacent at the Northeast and Southwest corners, respectively. (Top center of the map.)
3. 1871 PLat Map showing same two parcels with other "Carpenter" properties as well - A (Thomas Alonzo) Carpenter-134978 (45 acres), directly east and L (Lafayette) Carpenter-134528 (15 acres), just north of the A. Carpenter parcel.
Note on all three Plat Maps that the Culley/Cully family owned the companion 80 acre parcel directly west of the Justin Carpenter 80 acre parcel. Two daughters of Levi Culley, Julia and Elizabeth, married two sons of Justin Carpenter, Timothy-134542 and John Hiram-134377, in Richland County, Ohio. Both couples relocated to the White Mound Settlement, Franklin Township, Sauk, Wisconsin immediately after the mariages.
Compiled by N.N. Hill
Page 422, from History of Townships, Chapter XLIV, Berlin Township
“The third race to occupy this territory began coming about 1808, or before. Bedford county, Pennsylvania, probably has the honor of sending Berlin its first settlers; these were the Markleys. Henry Markley came in 1808 and erected the first cabin in the township, upon the farm now owned by James McIntire. Mr. Markley was accompanied by John Brown, sr. Mr. Markley purchased one thousand acres of land… His family consisted of his wife, three sons, and two daughters, viz: Henry Markley, Jr., John, James, Mary and Amelia; all now dead. John Brown’s family consisted of his wife, three sons, John, Jeremiah and Thomas, and a daughter who married John Pinkley. None of these are now living.
