COMMENT: Per Mark Carpenter
It looks like David's father Solomon went to Wisconsin, but we don't know what happened to Solomon after that.
I have a copy of Thomas G's will mentioning his wife Jane and children Jonathan, Solomon, Sylvester, Robert, Deborah Knowles, Susannah Foster, and Cornelia Sweet. Actually, I can only lay my hand on a transcript at the moment, as I'm not sure where my father saw a scan/copy of it. But it does mention giving land in Murray, Orleans Co., NY to a Solomon. I have scans of other documents related to the will, such as notices and an inventory list. "I also give and bequeath to my son Solomon Carpenter and his children, the use and occupancy of a lot of land number thirty two in the town of Murray and in the county of Orleans and state of New York. Said lot is bounded on the north by lot number thirty three, on the east by lot number thirteen, and on the south by lot number thirty one, and on the west by lot number fifty one containing one hundred and four 16/100 acres of land."
"Landmarks of Orleans County, New York" by Isaac S. Signor also has some pertinent info. p. 386/434 Solomon Carpenter, born in Rensselaer County, NY in 1787, came early to Murray, and took up land joining Holley on the east. In 1823 he moved to Wisconsin, where he died in 1846. Of his eight children only David is living.

On February 7, 1791, Saratoga County was formed from its parent, Albany County. Within the county’s borders are the Adirondack Mountains, the Kayaderosseras Creek and Sacandaga River, numerous lakes and streams, and rolling farmland. The Hudson River forms the eastern and northern boundary of the county, and the Mohawk River, the southernmost boundary. Originally, Saratoga County had four towns: Ballston, Stillwater, Halfmoon and Saratoga.

BOUNTY LAND:
A Richard Carpenter served in the Montgomery company, in the 14th Regiment of Infantry and given warrant number 496 with details in Register 96.
A cross check on line indicates that this was the company of Captain Thomas Montgomery of the 14th Infantry Regiment during the War of 1812. See:
– Sadly most of the names that have discharge certificates are not listed because of a series of fires. Such is the case with Richard Carpenter.
Bounty lands received in this series was given in south west corner of Michigan.

Joan Cady forwarded your inquiry to me on behalf of Heritage Hunters.
The listed a Richard Carpenter and noted that his father was William Carpenter who was married on September 13, 1787 to Rachel Armstrong. Ritchie did not cite the source, but it was in the records of the Ballston Center Presbyterian Church. Ritchie also noted that there was a William Carpenter in the 1790 Federal Census in the Town of Stillwater, Saratoga County. (One William Carpenter was listed in the 1788 tax assessment list for Stillwater, also.) Both Richard’s and William’s entries in the Ritchie Collection cite a reference to Will Book 7, page 63.
Saratoga County Surrogate’s Court probate records, Will Book 7, page 63
Last Will and Testament of Richard Armstrong of the Town of Ballstown dated 15 September 1794
He left to his mother a life estate in his property in Ballstown, and which after her decease was to go to his three nephews: Joel Avery, Benoni Armstrong and Richard Carpenter. Specifically, “to Richard Carpenter, son of William Carpenter the one equal fourth part” of that property.
Saratoga County Clerk’s Registry of Deeds, Volume H, page 211
1 July 1818 Richard Carpenter “of the township of Norton in the County of Medina & State of Ohio” sold to Ephraim Miller of Ballston, Saratoga County NY; for $180, land in Ballston willed by Richard Armstrong to Richard Carpenter by will dated 15 September 1794.
Is the location of Norton, Medina County OH one that fits with your Richard Carpenter? There is an intestate estate indexed for a William Carpenter whose death occurred about 1814, but I haven’t had a chance to look at that file yet. Intestate means without a will, so there probably is not much in that file about his family.

REV. LEWELL CARPENTER DIES IN MISSOURI
Wabash, Ind., Feb. 14: Word was received today of the death of Rev. Lewell Carpenter, president of Bethany Park Assembly, at the home of his daughter Mrs. George Blue in Kansas City, Mo. He was known all over the United States. Mr. Carpenter during his missionary dedicated 72 churches in this and other states and raised $2,000,000 at the dedications. The funeral will be held Wednesday afternoon in this city.
===============================
BIOGRAPHICAL - by John T. Brown, Church of Christ
LEEWELL L. CARPENTER Was born in Norton, Summit county, Ohio, on the 10th day of December, A.D. 1832. His parents were poor and he grew up without many of the advantages of the more favored boys in the neighborhood.
He, however, received a common school education, and his parents managed to send him to Mt. Union Academy, where he prepared himself so he was able to teach in a district school, saving the money that he earned in teaching, and helped by his parents, what they could, he entered Bethany College in the autumn of 1855, where he received instruction from Alexander Campbell, W. K. Pendleton, N. C. Milligan, Robert Richardson, and other members of the splendid faculty of Bethany College. It is the boast of Bro. Carpenter that he cannot remember the time when he did not hear the primitive gospel preached by such men as Alexander Campbell, the Greens, the Haydens, and that splendid army of pioneer preachers, who in an early day, sounded out the word all over the old Western Reserve in Ohio.
On the 14th day of August, A. D. 1853, at the home church in Norton, he made public confession of faith in Jesus Christ, and surrendered his all to the loving Savior. The same day he was immersed into Christ by A. B. Green, and took his membership in the Church of Christ. In the spring of 1857, he went to Fulton county, Ohio, and began preaching the gospel in school houses, barns, groves, private houses, any where he could get the people together.
From 1857 to 1861 - four years - he had, with his own hands, baptized in that one county more than 1,000 persons, and organized seven congregations, which are now strong churches, wielding a mighty influence for primitive Christianity.
On May 16, 1861, he was married to Miss Mary E. Funk, a young sister that he had baptized three years before. God gave them seven children; one is in the better land. Four boys and two girls are living; all are honored and respected citizens, and all are members of the church of Christ. In 1868 he removed to Wabash, Indiana, where he still resides.
He was the first president of both the Ohio and the Indiana Sunday School Associations. He is identified with all the missionary enterprises of the church. For ten years he was State Sunday School Evangelist in Indiana. During these years he organized a large number of schools and then organized many of them into churches. He also held Institutes and Normals in nearly every county in the state.
He was also state evangelist of the Indiana Christian Missionary Society for years. One peculiar feature of his work was the grouping of weak churches and locating ministers for each group. He also established quite a number of new churches. The First church in Fort Wayne is one of them. He was the first life member of the Foreign Missionary Society. He is a life member or director of every missionary organization of our people. He is also an enthusiastic worker in the Y.P.S.C.E.
He was one of the founders of Bethany Assembly, the National Chautauqua of the Church of Christ, and for many years has been its president. He has quite a record as a church dedicator, having dedicated nearly 600 houses of worship, and raised more than $2,000,000 to pay for these houses. While but a small part of his time has been spent in evangelistic work, yet he has baptized more than 7,000 penitent believers. Although seventy years old he is as strong and able to work as at any period of his life. He is doing as hard work and as much of it, and standing his work [458] just as well as he ever did. He has traveled and preached in many of the states and territories of the Union, and in the King's Dominions. The older he grows the stronger is his faith in the word of God. He believes the old Jerusalem gospel with all his heart, and greatly delights to preach it. Although a preacher for forty-six years, he says that he has never had but one vacation, and that was when he had the typhoid fever. He says that he expects to make Wabash, Ind., his home until he goes to heaven.

found but no Sylvanus.  So by default, now listed with Copeland until further
information can be gathered. John Laird believes he should be in this generation
but where is unknown.  1/99 jrc.
NOTE: Cemetery records indicate Henry Pierce as the only child?
WOW! Were we wrong!  See E-MAIL below.  JRC May 2002
