Group 3 - Descendants of William Carpenter-98-
Father of William Carpenter-584 (b. abt 1605)

Notes

466. Nehemiah Carpenter

Number 307 in the Carpenter Memorial.  Page 84
He resided in Walkill and Goshen in Orange county, NY.  Probably not married
per the above record.  Ancestor File lists a family for him though.

WILL: Will dated 1 Dec 1789 and proven 17 Jul 1790.  Wills to sister Hannah,
brothers Michael, William, James and Benjamin, nephew Solomon, eldest son of
Michael and William son of William.   NOTE: Does not mention wife or children!

He enlisted from Goshen in the Revolutionary war, was appointed by Gen. James
Clinton in 1776 as Quartermaster of his regiment.  He was in the assault of
Fort Montgomery in 1777. was taken prisoner and exchanged 25 Oct 1780, and was
appointed an Ensign.  He was honorably discharged 3 Nov 1783.
He was a member of the "Society of the Cincinnati"; his signiture was
on the roll. In a letter from John Schuyler, Secretary of the NY State
Society of the Cincinnati he says:
"While he was a prisoner, being a good writer, he made money in writing for the
British officers.  On one occasion he was called upon to get a drink of water
for one of the officers: the officer asked him if the water was poisoned, and
being very thristy himself he asked for the the cup, and he drank a very heavy
drink himself."
It is claimed that the foregoing record belongs to Nehemiah b. 29 June 1757,
the son of Nehemiah of Jamaica.  The compiler of the Carpenter Memorial thinks
this is a mistake and that it belongs to Nehemiah, son of Solomon of Goshen, b.
abt 1750.  It is evident that the latter served in the war and the State
Records refer to him when they speak of "Carpenter, Nehemiah, Ensign: appointed
29 June 1781, to date from 5 June 1779 when mustered as Ensign: late
Quartermaster of the 5th NY returned from captivity."  From official
records Nehemiah Carpenter, Ensign in 2nd NY Regiment: Phillip Cortland,
Colonel:Robert Cockran, Lt. Col., and Nicholas Fish, Major, 1777 to 1780.
The "Revolution Pledge Association" of the Goshen Precinct which contained
Goshen, Chester, Warwick, and a part of Blooming Grove, was signed  by the
folowing named CARPENTERs: James, Moses, Benjamin, Daniel, Samuel, Solomon,
Michael and William in 1775.  In Cornwell precinct were the signitures of John,
Benjamin, Timothy, Joseph Jr, John, Elijah, William and John - three Johns.
There can be added those that signed in Salisbury.

DEATH:Goshen Western Division.   SEE BELOW.
BIRTH: AF has birth as 1730 and the Carpenter Memorial has 1750.

Dear John:
Found this at the Fonda Archives today in a book entitled "Calendar of Wills". I love it because it is a collection of way back stuff that we can no longer actually get our hands on.
I'm researching the Dunning family who lived in the same area as my Carpenter family, ie. Hope and Northville, Hamilton Co. NY. Came across this:
Will of Jacob Dunning written 1770 Oct 15, probated Nov. 1, 1770 of Goshen precint, Orange Co., NY yeoman, mentions son John, Jacob and Benjamin, dau.. Bathsheba, Mehitabel and Mary. Real estate some in Wawayanda Patent and personal property. Exec. 3 sons Witnesses: James Carpenter of Orange co, schoolmaster, John Conkling and Elizabeth Dunning.
Don't know if you had all those Orange Co. Carpenter's or not but if you do, here is a tidbit for James..at least now we know he was a schoolmaster!

NEHGS - Marriage Notices from the New York Evening Post, 1801-1890
At Goshen on Tuesday the 2nd instant by the Rev. Mr. Ker, MR. JEROMUS JOHNSON, merchant of this City to MISS MARY CARPENTER, eldest daughter of James Carpenter, Esq. of that place.  Date: 1802 3/8

BOOK:
THE ANCESTRY AND DESCENDANTS OF COL. SOLOMON CARPENTER OF GOSHEN, NEW YORK. 1974. (Descendants of Col. Solomon Carpenter (1690-1762) of Goshen, New York)
...
(Following is a condensed version of an eight part series written by Goshen Historian Elizabeth Sharts for the independent Republican of Goshen a few years ago. Parts 1-7 are taken directly from a story in the Dec. 20, 1896 edition Of The Brooklyn Daily Eagle and the "historian's notes" are Miss Shorts' comments. Part 8 is based upon the book Traditions and Recollections by Carpenter descendant Roswell C. Coleman and in her note following this section Miss Sharts gives his family background.)
In the attic of an old Goshen, N.Y. homestead which has been in the Carpenter family for almost 200 years were recentlv found five trunks of letters, historical documents and keep sakes. They had never been out of family keeping and had not been exposed to light of day for upward of half a century, so were in truth rich With dust of ages.
Some of the documents were commissions bestowed upon fami- - 39 - ly members who gave long and honorable service in the Revolutionary War. Others told of quaint and amusing experiences in stage coach days, years before the iron horse had made its way throughout the land. Some of the letters related to the period when slavery was an established institution in even the good old Empire State. To sum up briefly the treasures discovered in that wonderful attic, it may be said that unbound volumes of unpublished history were found in those chests.
The treasure trove was discovered one day last summer when a visit was made to the garret by a young descendant determined to leave no trunk unturned. A former owner of the house, a Miss Johnson, had not allowed anyone to visit the garret. What a storehouse it proved to be -- old spinning wheels, rare autographs, old prints, etc.
Solomon Carpenter, original holder of the property, went in about 1703 from Jamaica, Long Island, to Goshen and purchased a small part of the farm which, under the ownership of the Carpenter family, grew to be 700 acres. His son James built the present homestead and the little shed in the rear is where the slaves had their quarters.
(HISTORIAN'S NOTE: 1703 is the date of the Indian deed known as the Wawayanda Patent. Official records indicate Solomon Carpenter came to Goshen with the first settlers in 1714. An old news item mentions a cabin built by a Frenchman named L'Hommedieu as being on the land he bought. Solomon Carpenter is listed as one of the original owners of the Town Rights Lots alloted in 1721.)
Nehemiah and James Carpenter were sons of Solomon. A daughter of James wed Jeromus Johnson, brother of Gen. Jeremiah Johnson whose name is interwoven with the history of Kings County. The old house has had no additions for 150 years, or since James Carpenter's time.
...
Jeromus Johnson and his wife, the former Mary Carpenter, had three sons and three daughters. Only one son and one daughter married and the house has descended to Mrs. Mary Peloubet and her daughter, Miss Fannie, who resided until recently at 482 Greene Ave., this city (Brooklyn), and who removed to the Carpenter homestead at Goshen in April. They will make the old dwelling their home. The house is sheltered by trees and surrounded by 10 acres.
It was Miss Peloubet (Fannie) who discovered the treasures, - 40 - which also included two Revolutionary cartridge boxes with bayonet, scabbard and cross belts. One of the most precious heirlooms is a carved mahogany bedstead almost identical to the one on which George Washington died.
Mrs. Peloubet was named for her grandmother -- Mary Carpenter who married Jeromus Johnson -- who was one of the school girls at Trenton who scattered flowers in the pathway of Washington as he passed through that New Jersey town. There was much that was romantic and heroic about the Carpenter women of Colonial days.

483. Benedict Carpenter

Number 320a in the Carpenter Memorial.  Page 86
No family listed.

This may be the Benedick Carpenter who joined himself to the Society of Friends in the 1740s and documented several times in the Shresbury NJ Meeting records as a member and being acceptable. He also had affiliation with the Philadelphia, PA Friends.  His name last appears tenth month of 1779.  While cited as of Monmouth, NJ, he is also cited as of Chester, PA. Many of the records found indicate his visiting. But none seem to indicate birth, marriage or family association.  A further detailed search and review is needed.

Number 320b in the Carpenter Memorial.  Page 86

COMMENT: Of the Cotleb Zimmerman line per James Usher. James Usher was wrong, however. Further research has confirmed why Usher mislabeled certain descendants.
SEE: Genealogical and Historical Record of the Carpenter Family, by James Usher
Page 30 regarding The Carpenter Family of Long Island and NY.
Archelus is listed as Archibald in the Usher record.
Apparently this line was a Loyalist thus not deserving to be of the winning side of
Carpenters.
