7606. William B. S. Carpenter

William B. S. was born in Delaware,,OH, in 1828.  His father
was a cripple early in life and his mother died young so he had
to educate himself.  He taught school for a number of years till
he saved money enough to put himself through a medical college.
He graduated at the Cleveland medical college in 1853.  In 1856
he emigrated west with his young wife and baby son. They spent
the winter of 1856 and 1557 in northern Iowa suffering great
hardships from the cold.  In 1857 he came to ,KS and located
in Lime , taking up claims and practicing medicine through
the country.  This was just at the time of the "Border Ruffian
war" which led up to the war of the Rebellion in 1861 and Lime
County was the scene of some of the most bloody massacres of
that bloody time.  In 1861 he enlisted in the army as a private
but was soon promoted and in a few months was elevated to major
and surgeon of the 5th cavalry.  He served three years under
General Powell Clayton, present minister to Mexico, was mustered
out in 1863 at Leavenworth where he remained and entered the
practice of medicine.  He died Dec. 16, 1893 after becoming one
of the leading physicians of that place.  He was a member of the
,KS State Medical association and for fourteen years was
physician to the ,KS state penitentiary.2  SOUR S203

ALFERD , ALFORD , CARPENTER posted by Mike Hill on Wednesday, September 22, 1999
Looking for information on ALFORD / ALFERD CARPENTER. Alford Carpenter was born about 1785 in New Hampshire or Massachusetts. He is listed in the 1840, 1850, and 1860 census records living in Macoupin County, Illinois. Alford may have been related to a JOHN CARPENTER (b. in Ohio about 1814). John was the father of 5-6 children including sons John SETH and CHARLES R Carpenter. John died in Iowa about 1853. Johns son Seth is enumerated as living in the Alford Carpenter household in the 1860 census. What is the connection between Alford and John? Are they father and son? Brothers? Cousins? Does anyone know this family?

I believe Mary Eliza Carpenter is her  name, not Mary Matilda.   I can not remember if I had sent you a previous query, but I feel I might have.  I know have seen census that I believe give the name of my ggg grandparents as Ira and Charlotte Carpenter.
I believe this is my gg grandmother who  married Albert Andrew Sleeper.
I finally found her on the 1870 Franklin Co. OH Sharon TWP. page 760 August 1870
250 250 Carpenter, Ira    53       M   W        Farmer     4000   2470   Ohio
                  Charlotte       43       F    W        Keeping House                Ohio
                 Flora               15       F    W        Attending School            Ohio
                 Mary E.          13        F   W        Attending School             Ohio
                 Lodoria          11        F   W        Attending School             Ohio
                 Martha            9         F    W                                                  Ohio
                 Annie  ?          6          F   W                                                   Ohio
                 Celia               4         F    W                                                  Ohio
                 Albert             1          M  W                                                  Ohio
In this same census:
274 274 Evans, Richard 32         M  W        Tin Smith       550 500    Ohio
                 Gobin             24        F   W        Keeping House                Vermont
Sleeper, Albert 18       M   W        Tin Smith  ,Jrn.                New Hampshire
( he is a long way from home in New Hampshire)
Mary Eliza was only 15 when she married in December 25, 1872.  She was born in 1857.
We do  not have the first names of the ggg  grandparents, but the family records from Great Uncle Thor Myers show as follows:
Grandpa Carpenter was born March 18, 1818 and lived 81 years.
Grandma Carpenter was born March 25, 1828 and lived 92 years.
Somewhere along the line  someone thought her maiden name was Savidge.  My grandmother said she didn't think that was right, but  she couldn't remember the right name.  I have not found this to be true.  I now think she was Charlotte Vroman.
Mary Eliza had 9 children, of which 6 lived to adult hood.  She died soon after her 9th child.  He also passed away soon after. Mary E. died 1891/2.  I have several census from Kansas showing the family, and two death times.  One from family records, and one a copy from some county records.  I also have Albert Sleeper in several town registers as owning a tin shop.
They are in Sedgewick Co, KS to start with, but later are listed in Reno Co. KS (very close neighboring counties)
My g grandmother Flora Murilla Sleeper was her 3rd child.  Flora and her brother Harley the 5th child lost their hearing from a childhood illness.  Both attended the Deaf School in Witchita Kansas.   I have a picture of Mary Eliza.  And I have two pictures of Carpenter ladies from Westerville, Ohio. ( Interesting Ira's sister Abigail went to deaf school and another sister married a professer and lived in Westerville.)
I believe that I have found my GGG grandparents.  Ira and Charlotte Carpenter.
Sincerely, :-) Barbara Long

Charlotte Cordelia Curtiss Broman

NAME: Charlotte Cordelia Curtiss /VROMAN/ or VRoOMAN.
However, Broman is correct.  See husband's notes.
She may have been married to a Curtiss but this is not confirmed.

15091. Mary Eliza Matilida Carpenter

NAME: Mary Matilida in one record and Mary Eliza (Mary E. in 1870 census).

(and) My g grandmother Flora Murilla Sleeper was her 3rd child.  Flora and her brother Harley the 5th child lost their hearing from a childhood illness.  Both attended the Deaf School in Witchita Kansas.   I have a picture of Mary Eliza.  And I have two pictures of Carpenter ladies
