Mr. Carpenter:
Thank you for the quick response and the data that you sent.  I think that we
have a match except I have the mother of Augustus-26308 as Elizabeth or Betsey
(1850 &1860 federal census) rather than Sally Tompkins-26305.  I wonder if
there were two wives or do I have the wrong Augustus?

PROBLEM:
Many think Michael is an artifact or a mislabeled person on the 1850 US Census. Some claim he is not really a Carpenter but had some other surname and was enumerated as Carpenter by mistake. They think he is a day laborer or similar working for the Carpenter family. They indicate the pattern given on the census page supports their belief.
When I proached the idea of an adoption, formal or informal, after Michael's immigration in 1844 (age 14) they allowed for the idea. But other than the 1850 Census, no other document supports the idea.
So we have a possibility both ways.  JRC Dec 2018.
For example:
NOTE5:
Many of the MacIntyres of Northern Ireland are believed to be descended from the Scottish Clan MacIntyre whose ancient seat was in Lorne, Scotland.
A documented instance of the surname Carpenter being adopted by an Irish McIntyre in America is that of Ireland-born brothers Owen Patrick McIntyre of Placer County, California and Michael Carpenter of Ottawa County, Michigan as shown in McIntyre's last will & testament dated August 25, 1875 and filed September 11, 1875 naming his brother Michael to direct the education of his nephew and namesake Michael's son Owen Patrick Carpenter.

E-MAIL: Wed, 29 Nov 2000 From: Stuart Howell
Thanks very much, John, for responding to my inquiry about Harriet
Carpenter.  I have seen THE CARPENTER FAMILY IN AMERICA, by Daniel
Hoagland Carpenter.
I wondered if Warren Carpenter wasn't Enoch's brother, rather than son,
for he was b. 24 Apr 1822, just five years after Enoch's birth.  David
Carppenter's will, dated 8 Nov 1858, proved 4 Sept 1860, gives to wife,
Betty $200 per year, to son, Warren his home, etc., to son, Enoch F. and
his wife, property in Greenport, etc.  Perhaps, there was a Warren
Carpenter, brother to Enoch, and also, a Warren, son of Enoch.
The 1850 U. S. Census for Southold Town (Greenport) listed harriet N.
Carpenter as 14 years old, living in the household of Enoch Carpenter,
33, merchant.  Also in the household were Mary C. Carpenter, 29;
Margaret E. Carpenter, 5; Dennis Pratt, 18, clerk; Thomas Fordham, 17,
sailmaker.  There was no Warren Carpenter listed, so I suspect he was
Enoch's brother, not his son.
On 19 November 1850, Elijah Pierson Raynor (my great grandfather), 17,
married in Greenport by Rev. John Reid, Pastor of the Church in
Franklinville, L.I., Harriet N. Carpenter, 14, of Greenport.  I have a
copy of the marriage certificate.
Elijah Pierson Raynor was listed in the Southold Town Census of 1850 as
17 years old, a carpenter, living in the household of Richard Benjamin,
30 yrs. old, in Greenport.
In 1857, Enoch Carpenter was fire chief in Greenport.  According to THE
SOUTHSIDE SIGNAL, Babylon, NY, Saturday, November 3, 1883, p.2, Enoch F.
Carpenter died 12 September 1883 in Newport, Clay County, Texas, and is
buried in Sterling Cemetery, Greenport, L.I.  I saw his and his wife,
Mary's gravestones several years ago - while trying to determine where
their daughter, Harriet N. (Carpenter) Raynor was buried.  Enoch F.
Carpenter's wife, Mary E. Carpenter, died 24 June 1873 (RIVERHEAD WEEKLY
NEWS).
Elijah Pierson Raynor had seven sons, the oldest of whom, Franklin
Carpenter Raynor, was born 26 Sept 1856.  Two months later, 14 Nov 1856,
Elijah Pierson Raynor married Harriett N. Goulder (or Golder) of
Greenport, b. 1839 in Newtown, L.I., d/o James and Mary Goulder.
What I am trying to determine is what happened to Elijah Pierson
Raynor's first wife, Harriet N. (Carpenter) Raynor?  Did she perhaps die
in childbirth with the birth on 26 Sept 1856 of Elijah Raynor's oldest
son, Franklin Carpenter Raynor?  If so, perhaps he married less than two
months later, Harriett Goulder,  on 14 Nov 1856, so his infant son would
have a mother.  The 1860 U. S. Census for Greenport lists Elijah Raynor
as 28 (or 27) years old, ship's carpenter.  Also in the household were
Harriet Raynor, 24, Franklin Raynor, 4, and Charles Raynor, 2.
I have been trying for years to determine when and where Harriet
(Carpenter) Raynor died, and where she is buried.  I do know from Elijah
Raynor's biography that he didn't reside continuously in Greenport.  He
was there first as a carpenter's apprentice, then he spent three years
in New York City and a year in Connecticut before returning to
Greenport; he later, moved to Westhampton Beach, L.I., where he was
born. That's where I am, John, with this one.  I shall be grateful to
you for any suggestions or information you can offer to help me
clear up this puzzle.
Thanks for your interest.
Stuart Howell.

E-MAIL reply to Stuart by John R. Carpenter.
Dear Stuart,
A couple of questions ...
Does the 1850 marriage certificate give the bride's full name or partial name?
Check the dates.  Could the zero be a six?
Do you have a copy of the 1850 census?  What is the occupation of Harriet N.?
What is her relationship to the head of the house listed as?  She may have been
working or visiting there. Could she be a niece? Was Enoch Carpenter a
Godparent?
14 Nov 1856  Harriet N. Goulder - B. 1839 in 1856 per your note.
                             and B. 1836 per the 1860 Census.
19 Nov 1850  Harriet N.         - B. 1836 per the 1850 Census.
My guess with all of this is the two Harriett N.s are the same person.
The 14 Nov is the actual marriage date and the 19 Nov is the filing or
certified date.
14 Nov 1850 is a Thursday.
14 Nov 1856 is a Friday.  Friday marriages were common for working people.
19 Nov 1856 is a Wednesday.
Franklin Carpenter RAYNOR b. 26 Sep 1856
Franklin           RAYNOR b.        1856 - Age 4 in the 1860 Census.
These two children raise the odds of both wives being the same person. That the
parents married after Franklin was born makes me think that Franklin was
adopted by Elijah Pierson Raynor.
This brings up the question of the name Carpenter as a middle name. Was he
sired by a Carpenter?  But By which one?  In 1856 Harriet was age 20.  Was it
by Warren - the son or uncle or were they the same person? Note their death
dates.

I hope these questions help.  I have sent a copy of this message to John L.
Carpenter who has a greater understanding of the Carpenters in Long Island that
I.
Let me know what you think.

MORE: Thu, 30 Nov 2000 from Stuart Howell.
Thank you very much, John, for the studied analysis of my Harriet
Carpenter puzzle.
Harriet Carpenter's name on the marriage certificate is handwritten in
ink:  Harriet N. Carpenter.  The date of the marriage is also
handwritten on the certificate "fifty" followed immediately by the
words, "joined Elijah Raynor...", so the date could not be fifty-six.
The handwriting is identical to that of the signature of John Reid,
Pastor the Church in Frnaklinville, so it is quite evident that he wrote
out and signed the marriage certificate.
The 1850 Southold Town Census for Greenport lists the family of Enoch
Carpenter as I presented it, with no relationship given for the children
(Harriet and Margaret), and no occupation for Harriet.
For many years, I was convinced that - as you suggested - Harriet
Carpenter and Harriett Goulder were one and the same person.  It seemed
almost too coincidental that the names of both wives were Harriett N.,
and that both marriages occurred in November, one in 1850 and the other
in 1856.  I thought perhaps Rev. John Reid mistakenly listed Harriet's
last name on the marriage certificate as Carpenter as that was Elijah
Raynor's occupation.  I further thought that the marriage of Harriett
Goulder and Elijah Raynor could have occurred in 1850, rather than 1856;
maybe, the 0 looked like a 6.  I later changed my view, however, when I
found that Elijah Raynor's oldest child, Franklin had Carpenter as a
middle name, and that he was born September 26, 1856, two months before
Elijah's marriage to harriett Goulder.  Also, there was a Harriet
Carpenter in Greenport in 1850 (age 14) and Elijah was in Greenport at
the same time as a carpenter's apprentice (age 17).  They seem a little
young to have married, perhaps, but quite possible.
According to Elijah Raynor's biography (written and published while he
was still alive), following three years of apprenticeship in
shipbuilding in Greenport, Elijah Pierson Raynor worked for eight months
in Connecticut, and then for two years in New York City.  He returned to
Greenport for three years, and then went back to Westhampton Beach.
I am very well acquainted with eastern Long Island, John; I was born and
grew up there (Westhampton Beach).  I now reside in New Hampshire.  I
have spent many hours researching this family in Greenport, as well as
elsewhere in Southold and Southampton Towns, on Long Island.  I even
checked out deaths in New York City during the 1850-1856 time period,
thinking Harriet may have died there.  I tried looking in the local
newspaper (THE TRAVELLER-WATCHMAN) of the time, but unfortunately, the
editions during those years were destroyed in a fire at the newspaper
office, and I wasn't able to locate copies at other locations - although
I perhaps should have tried further.  I thought Harriet's death may have
been listed in the newspaper.
Until I can find evidence to the contrary, I am continuing to go under
the supposition that Harriet Carpenter of Greenport was indeed married
to Elijah Pierson Raynor in 1850, that she probably died in childbirth
in September 1856, and Elijah Raynor then married less than two months
later so his infant would have a mother.  That's all speculation, of
course, but unless I find out what happened to Harriet Carpenter,
presumed daughter of Enoch and Mary Carpenter, I'll continue to hold to
that theory.
I shall review further all the information you sent me via email, John,
and respond within the next couple of days.
I truly appreciate all the time and effort you have expended on this
issue. Stuart.
MORE:
Hi, John -
Just a few more comments after studying the information you sent
yesterday:
I don't have a copy of the 1850 Census for Greenport (Southold Town),
but I've seen it and copied the entry for Enoch Carpenter's household:
       Enoch Carpenter, 33, merchant
       Mary C. Carpenter, 29
       Margaret E. Carpenter, 5
       Harriet N. Carpenter, 14
       Dennis Pratt, 18, clerk
       Thomas Fordham, 17, sailmaker
I presume the last two persons were boarders.
Harriett Goulder was born 1839, according to her tombstone inscription
(her husband was still living at the time (1904), so I would think that
an accurate date.  I recognize that her birthdate would have been
different based on U. S. Census data: 1860 (b. 1836), 1865 Southold Town
Census (b. 1837), 1870 (b. 1836), 1880 (b. 1838).  So, she evidently was
born sometime between 1836 and 1839.  Her death certificate gave only
her date of death, not a birthdate or age.
Elijah Pierson Raynor's biography, which appeared in PORTRAIT AND
BIOGRAPHICAL RECORD, SUFFOLK COUNTY, 1896, stated that Elijah Raynor
married 14 November 1856, Harriet Goulder, resident of Greenport and
native of Newtown.  At the time this book was published, Elijah was 63
years old, so I assume the information was accurate.  There is no
mistake that the year of his marriage to Harriet Carpenter on the
marriage certificate was 1850; the eighteen hundred was printed and the
fifty was written in longhand, no neumerals, so the 50 could not have
been mistaken for 56.
If Warren Carpenter was the son of Enoch and Mary Carpenter, and he was
born in 1836, why wasn't he included in Enoch's household in the 1850
Census?  I think Warren was Enoch's brother, not his son.
These are my additional comments, John.  If you have any further
thoughts regarding this puzzle, please let me know.
Again, thank you very much for taking the time and effort to respond so
thoughtfully to my inquiry.
Stuart.
