8472. Nancy Carpenter

History of Washtenaw County, Michigan, page 1324 for members of family, and of son's (J. Edgar Rogers') family.

1850 U.S. Census of York Twp., Washtenaw, MI. taken 14 Aug 1850, Film 443580, Salt Lake City, Family History Library.    In the home of Evan Begole 29 and Margaret 17, were:  Clark Rogers 35, Nancy (Carpenter), 33; Edgar 13; Mary 11; Jane 10; Ira 8; Spencer 5; Adeline 3 and Clarence 1/12.  Also a Mary I. Harris 17.   Clark, Nancy and Edgar show birthplaces of NY, but Mary and the rest were born in MI. (This could mean Clark and Nancy were in MI between 1837 - 1939).  Clark is shown farming 1500-1600 acres. (History of Washtenaw  pub. 1881 by Chas. C. Chapman &  said they came to Michigan in 1834.)    Clark's parents, Francis Rogers 67 and Mesilda 63 are also on this same census.  Hiram Caton 21 male, and Abigail Rogers 19 Female and Elenor Rogers 27 female are in the home of Francis and Mesilda.  They all show birth place as NY.

1860 U.S. Census of York Twp., Washtenaw , MI,  taken 23 July 1860.  Film 803563, SLC-FH Library,  Household #972/950, page 189, Clark Rogers 46 male b. NY;  Nancy 44, b. NY;  Mary 21, b. MI; Jane 20, b. MI; Spencer 17 male, b. MI; Madaline 11, female, b. MI;  Hebron, 8, male b. MI; Willie 2, male b. MI.  Calvin Monroe is in the house 18 male  b. MI.   Close by, household 974/982 is Nancy and Clark's son Edgar Rogers 24, male b. NY, and Harriet (she was a Parsons and her parents lived next door) 20 female. b. MI.

1870 U.S. Census of Washtenaw  MI, Film 552206, SLC-FHL  Household #318-318, Rogers, Clark age 55 male;  Nancy 53;  Madeline 22; Willie 12 and Jenny Carpenter 13. (Believed to be Robert O. Carpenter's daughter. Robert and Nancy were brother and sister.)    Household 310/310, James E. Rogers, (Nancy's son) is also close.  James is 33; Harriet 30; H. Jane 51 female; Burt E. 1 male.    Also at  Household 313/313 is Kanouse, Walter age 30 male; Mary 31 female (Nancy's daughter) and Peter F. 4 male. Also in home is Heron H. Rogers, 18. (Probably Nancy's son Hebron, which would be Mary's brother).

1880 U.S. Census of York, Washtenaw, MI, page 384, Household, #279/284, Rogers, Clark age 66.  He gave both of his parent's birth places as Rho. Nancy age 63 gave her birthplace as NY; Father's as unknown and mother's as CT. (This would be wrong.  Father was Mass, mother RI--these have been verified. Nancy left home very young and probably did not remember) In same home is Anthony Bruch, 22 who gave his birthplace as Rhine Proineer. Again, not sure what that means, but it might explain the Rho by Clark's father's birthplace.

On that same census (1880) is her daughter and husband, Kanouse, Walter 39; Mary 41 wife; Peter F. male 14 son;  Clark D. male 8 son; Oscar male 6 son. Also in the home was John Brombs, b. OH, parents Germany, and Polina Jedele 21 b. MI, parents b. Germany.   Nancy's son and wife were also on this census:  James E. Rogers 48; Hattie 41 wife; Burt E. 11 son; Olie M. female 8, dau; Tinnie A. female 1, dau; also Harriet Parsons 63, Mother b. NY, Father of Harriet age 63 was b. NY, Mother b. CT.  Also in the home was Ribbie Servire, 18; Alfred Bond 22, and James Washington 22.

Nancy's daughter, Madeline, married Nancy's sister's (Rowena's) son, Daniel Pierce from New York. They were 1st cousins.  It is said they met at a family reunion, fell in love, and got married.

Oakwood Cem. is in Saline, MI "M" section, Lot 48.  Their graves are in the newer part, right down off the hill from the old section. The only older markers in the new part.  They are small stones, and some small children or infant markers are there too.

Saline Observer, Thurs. Feb. 21, 1895, Obituary of Mrs. Nancy Carpenter Rogers (15 Feb 1895).  "She was born in New York state, Nov. 19, 1816" "Four sons and three daughters survive her."  "Bert Rogers was home. . .to attend the funeral of his grandmother."  (His name is given as Albert not Bert in other obituaries.)  (We found additonal information in 1994 on several of the families, see her husband's and the children's files).

Clark Rogers

See wife's documentation for Census records and other data.

"Mr. Rogers came to Washtenaw , in 1834, located in Pitsburg Twp..  They had 12 children, 7 are living, . . .deceased are Ira, Clarence and 3 infants."

Court Records in Ann Arbor, Washtenaw, Mich., were searched in 1981, and gave mg. and ages.

Tombstone in Oakwood Cem., Saline, Mich. for their son, William gave 1848-1912, but Census Records would indicate birth was 1858, not 48.

On Microfilm in the Saline Library, an article in Saline Observer, Thurs. June 29, 1882, "Sudden Death of Clark Rogers."  (Age 68, died Friday, June 16, 1882 near Damon, Ogemaw County, Michigan.  He was 22 when he married Miss Nancy Carpenter, his surviving wife. . .Had lived in Saline until last winter, rented his farm to his son and homesteaded 160 acres of land near a son [in Ogemaw ]).  "He leaves a wife and seven grown children to mourn his loss."

Although the rest of the Rogers family are on the 1870, 1880 and 1894 State Census, around Wastenaw, this family has not been found.  A letter from Mrs. Maritt Martin of Saline, Mich to Helen Fox in NY,  said she knew the family of the Rogers, but didn't mention this Cowan family.  They must have moved away.

Newspaper Article in Bristol Ontario NY Town Hall Scrapbook 66, Page 43. "A very enjoyable event occured at the residence of Mr. & Mrs. C. W. C. which stood for Robert C. died the next March.  P. M. was Phila, but the family records have Phila A.  Phila, named for the grandmother on her mother's side, was the third child and the first one to live past her first year.  Out of six children, only three lived to maturity.  Edward died at birth, Mary, the second child, was only 12 days old when she died.  R. C. died at about 8 or 9 months. William and Martha's child #5, William Arthur, and child #6, Phebe A., lived.

Information from Mrs. Merle Fox, Canandaigua, NY, said, "Arthur, Phila and William are in E. Springwater Cem..  William b. 1857 may be another family.  William 1821-1896 (dates on tombstone) are buried in E. Springwater Cem..  Phebe, their daughter, is buried in Wayland, Steuben , NY, three miles from E. Springwater."  William Arthur may be just "Arthur" as that is what is on the tombstone, but family records had William Arthur, and Livingston County records said William Arthur.

History of Livingston County 1687-1881 974.785 H 2sm p. xxii, gave information about early residents of the county.

A visit was made to the E. Springwater Cem., Livingston , NY. ( Directions are on Hwy 21 to Wayland, take Co 37 at or near Tabors Corner Rd. Some mileage on the note was 5.7-3.8 = 1.9 miles ) William and Martha are buried by William's parents, Robert and Phebe McNair Carpenter. They share the same tombstone with their engravings on the different sides of the same stone. (Robert and Phebe Carpenter graves were moved here by William from Naples.)  Martha's parents Joshua and Phila Jones, are buried very close.  The graves are way back from the road, in a corner. A house is over the fence and can be used to help locate the gaves.  Robert and Phebe's are almost unreadable in 1992, but William and Martha can still be read on the stone.  With the help of shaving cream and a squeegee in 1995, the names could all be read.  We also received more information about William's family from one of his descendants and from Helen Fox, Canandaigua, NY.

Barry County Death records, Hastings, MI:  24 Oct 1877, Phoebe Jones of Orangeville, female, white, married, 53y6mo, b. NY.  No parent's names were given.  Her death was recorded June 7, 1878.

We visited the Prairieville Cem., Prairieville, Barry , MI in 1992 and have pictures of John and Phebe's graves and their son's, Calvin's.  Lydia is buried in the same Cem., but is not buried by her parents.  Rowena is also buried in the same Cem. by her husband, Henry C. Rogers, and family.  Death records of Barry County, MI, gave death date and place of death.

In 1994 a trip was made by Donna H. Hellewell, Aptos, CA, and Elma Carpenter,Battle Creek, MI, to Northern Michigan to search for Phebe's daughter, Estelle, and Margaret's step-daughter, Martha New.  Both were found, as well as Phebe's son, Melvin.  We had found them on a record earlier in a library, but we were not sure it was the same Melvin Jones.  It was.  They are all buried in a Cem. right outside of the town of Bellaire in Antrim County, MI.  The death records were in the Antrim County Court House, but it was Melvin's second wife.  On our way back to Battle Creek, MI, we stopped at the Allegan City Library and found an inquiry about John and Phebe Jones.  We were able to contact a descendant of Melvin's first wife, Walter Knoch Sr. of Cedar Springs, MI.  We
received a many names and dates of Phebe's descendants from him.  Estelle had no children but adopted one.  Melvin had a large posterity.

17050. John Jones Jr.

1870 U.S. Census, Orangeville, Barry, MI. Film 552160,  John was 14 yrs. old. It was his name, John Jones Jr.. that led us to correct a family record. The family record had Margaret Carpenter married to John Jones, but it was easy to determine that her sister Phebe was the one who married John Jones by following the Census each ten years.  It took a lot longer, however, to determine who Margaret did marry, once  we had John Jones with the proper wife, Phebe.  A list of children of Phebe Carpenter Jones was sent to this typist, and with a John Jones Jr. it was easy to see her husband should have been John Jones Sr. rather than Mortimer as the family records had stated it (who was actually her son).

1884 U.S. Census, Orangeville, Barry, MI. Film 915281, Household 130/131 Mortimer T. Jones 40 b. NY, parents b. NY; Mary A. 39 wife, b. We hope we can find more information on this John Jones Jr.  We have very little.

Nicholas was the son of Rev. John Carpenter (1772-1855) and Sarah Bush (1773-1855). He married three times and fathered at least fifteen children.
1st marriage: 7 Jun 1829 to Elizabeth "Eliza" Jackson in Lewis Co., West Virginia. They had eight children together:
David M. (1830-1906), Edward Jackson (1831-1880), Caroline (b.1833), John (1836-1858), Albert H. (1838-1893), Elizabeth (1841-1916), Mary E. (1843-1932) and Rachel (b.1849). I found Nicholas, Eliza, and five of their children on the 1840 Census. They were living in Saint Joseph County Indiana, where Nicholas was farming for a living. The five children with them would have been sons David, Edward, John and Albert, and daughter Caroline. After 1840, the couple welcomed two more daughters-Elizabeth in 1841 and Mary in 1843. Sadly, Eliza died six years later in childbirth along with infant daughter Rachel on 22 Feb 1849. With seven young children to care for, Nicholas waited only eight months before remarrying.
2nd marriage: 20 Oct 1849 to Abigail Scoops Brown in Marshall Co., Indiana. It was also a second marriage for Abigail. She had married George Brown on 9 Feb 1847 in Marion Co., Indiana. They do not appear to have had any children together. Nicholas and Abigail had five children together: Johnson/Luther (b. 1850), Catherine (b.1852), Elizabeth (1854-1917), Elizabeth (1854-1917), Byron (1856-1937), and Martha Jane (1859-1946). Nicholas appeared on the 1850 Census with Abigail, zoned in Marshall County. He was still busy farming while Abigail would have had her hands full with a newborn, a husband, and seven step-children in the house ranging in ages from 20-year-old David to 9-year-old Eliza.
By the time the 1860 enumeration took place, Nicholas and Abigail had welcomed five more children-Catharine in 1852, Elizabeth in 1854, Byron in 1856, Martha Jane in 1859 and Ellen Lee, born on 5 Feb 1862. Their blended family which included step-children David, aged 30, Albert, aged 21, and Mary, aged 16, were living in Green (today the Argos area), Marshall County, where their farm was located. David and Albert were employed, David as a baker and Albert as a laborer. I couldn't find marriage records for Edward or Caroline, but John had married Caroline Zumbaugh on 19 Oct 1860 and Elizabeth had married William Wolf on 24 Sep 1857, both marriages taking place in Marshall County.
Sadly, Abigail died three years after that census in 1863 at age 37. Nicholas married for the third time the following year.
3rd marriage: 15 Dec 1864 to Frances "Fanny" Rugg Nicholson in Marshall Co., Indiana. She was thirty years his junior. They had two children together. Fanny had previously married Thomas Nicholson on 1 Jul 1851 in Fulton Co. with whom she had at least six children-Nancy Anna (b.1851), William Henry (b.1855), Mary Alice (b.1857), Melissa Frances (b.1860), Sarah Ellen (b.1861, given away to Robert and Jane Railsbeck of Argos), and Viola (b.28 Sep 1864). Nicholas and Fanny's two children together were sons Niklos Lewis (1867-1936) and Leslie Brook (1870-1972). Nicholas and Fanny and their blended family appeared on the 1870 Census, still living in Green Township. Nicholas' name was transcribed as "Charles" for some reason. With the couple are Nicholas' six children with Abigail--Luther, Catherine, Elizabeth, Byron, Martha Jane and Ellen, two of Fanny's children with Thomas Nicholson-Mary Alice and Viola, and the two sons Fanny and Nicholas had together--2-year-old Niklos and 2-month-old Leslie. For some reason, Fanny's 10-year-old daughter Melissa was living in nearby Union Township with Henry and Caroline Garver. It is unclear where Fanny's other children William Henry, who would have been 19, and George, who would have been 16, were living.
Nicholas died two years after the 1870 enumeration on 5 Feb 1872 at age 68. His widow Fanny was only 39 years old.
Fanny appeared on the 1880 Census, still living in Green Township. With her were son William Henry, aged 25, daughter Melissa, aged 20, daughter Viola, aged 16, son Nicholas, aged 13, son Leslie, aged 11, and 7-year-old Edith Butcher, her daughter with third husband Alfred Butcher, whom she had married on 12 Jan 1873 in Marshall Co. Fanny gave her marital status as divorced, and she had gone back to her Carpenter surname. Fanny's daughter Ellen, Viola's twin, was living with half-sister Elizabeth and Elizabeth's husband Thomas R. Carlisle in New Castle, Fulton Co., Indiana.
Later that same year, Fanny would marry for a fourth time to Chesley Jones on 15 Oct 1880. Fanny appeared on the 1900 Census, widowed, aged 66, living with son Leslie, his wife Viola, and grandchildren Fanny, aged 5 and Nicholas, aged 2, both named after their grandparents. Leslie had become a farmer like his father. Fanny was still with them when the 1910 enumeration came around. Three more grandchildren had joined the family-Maudy in 1901, Selman in 1905, and Noah Ervin in 1907. Fanny reported that 7 of the 9 children she had borne were still living. Viola had died in 1893 at age 30. It is unclear which of her four husbands was the father of the other of those non-living children but a daughter named Sarah Ellen, born in 1860 and who died in 1894, is linked to Fanny's memorial. If this indeed is Fanny's daughter, based on that birth year, her father would have been Thomas Nicholson. This child may actually be one in the same as Ellen Lee but I don't think so.
Fanny lived another six years before dying two days after Christmas in 1916 at age 83.
