The son of Elisha I am descended from is Stephen Decatur Carpenter. Anyways, the two people you showed me as children to Elisha are both daughters I believe. So then both would lose their Carpenter name.
A interesting fact for you might be about where the Carpenters move to from New York (As I know). Stephen, son of Elisha(Revolutionary Veteran), served in the War of 1812 where he was granted a tract of land in Illinois. It was 160 acres. From my Gr Grandpa's scribbling, who passed away in 1987, right before Stephen's family was to move to Illinois he became ill.

So my next descendant, gr gr gr gr grandpa, the oldest son of Stephen, O.D. or Ormal Decatur(Captain of the Illinois 103rd in the civil war) took charge and traveled covered wagon to the unsettled land. In fact their were two or three squatters on the land when they got there... Enough about that. My great grandpa who did this research lived on this farm(oldest one still in the same family name in Illinois) and his wife, my gr grandma still lives on the farm in an old farmhouse. She still drives and use to be a school and music teacher and is just now starting to lose her short term memory a bit. I know she has quite a bit of information on our history. As you can see Decatur was a popular name, wonder if it was passed down. A county pioneer book of Fulton County, Illinois says that Elisha was born in 1748 (we know) and died in 1808... If this turns out there is a relation, my gr grandma still has a clothes dresser and some other furniture that came covered wagon from New York. This is getting interesting. I know of another cousin of the carpenter family I met through the internet who has much more info than me. I believe she is also trying to get through this Elisha block. She may have names of siblings that I don't. She is descended of Stephen also but the sister of O.D I believe. I have her e-mail if you would like to contact.

Number 3746 in the Carpenter Memorial on page 414.
Family on page 802 (# 1739).  A farmer.
NOTE:  Children numbers: 20565, 20566, 20567, & 20568 placed as children with Spouse - Lucina Thompson.
NOTE:  Which John Carpenter of two who is the rightful parent of this line is unknown.

He had 6 sons and 1 daughter.  He probably resided in Dover.
A lease of land and stock was made by Barlow Carpenter to his son John, in July 1817. Barlow then lived in Dover, Windham county, VT, where he probably died. Film #: 442737, Page #: , Ordinance #: 07902

FINALLY:  12 Aug 2014
The John Carpenter who married Lucina Thompson and went to Ohio is John Carpenter-20563 and not John Carpenter-20358 of John Carpenter-15737 and Hannah Record-18659.  This was done by census work where John & Lucinda were found in the 1860 and 1850 US Census records with John listed as being born in MA. See his notes.
John L. Carpenter of NH supplied the key piece of information, even though at first it appeared to have conflicting information (data typed in wrong from the 1860 US Census image). Once backtracked everything fell into place.  JRC

E-MAIL: Sun, 20 Feb 2000 From:
Andrea Carpenter
John,
I'm having a hard time with the marriage of John Carpenter to
Lucena Thompson. I have them being married in Dover(Wardboro), Windham,
Vt on Jan, 17, 1813  per LDS batch# 7809601, call#7126269 film. John and
Lucena moved to Coe Ridge Ohio, and had a son Barlow Green Carpenter
named after Barlow Green( father of Martha Green) Barlows mother and
wife of Oliver Carpenter.
The other kids George, etc. all show up in Coe ridge, Ohio. They also had
a son named Jonathan, after the father of Lucena Thompson. Jonathan
Thompson married Pricilla Sears
Also Sarah Goss was born 7 Feb, 1757(date o.k.) in Mendon, Worcester,
Mass daughter of Richard Goss and and Martha Robbins.
---------------------------------------------------
Richard Carpenter b. 16 Jan 1789 Mendon Worcester, Died Nov 8, 1863
Bennington,Bennnington,Vt.  Married Elizabeth Austin(daughter of John
Austin and Amy Lydia Downer) Oct 20, 1920 Bennington,Bennington, Vt.
Elizabeth Austin was born Dec 4, 1799 Bennington, Bennington, Vt. Died
Aug 23, 1862 Bennington, Bennington, Vt
children of Richard Carpenter/Elizabeth Austin are
Henry Goss Carpenter b. Sept 27, 1822 Bennington, Bennington, Vt
Edward Austin Carpenter b. Jul 2, 1824 Bennington, Bennington, Vt
John Downer Carpenter b. Jan 14, 1826 Oberlin, Lorain, Oh
Franklin Carpenter b. Feb 2, 1830 Oberlin, Lorain, Ohio
Richard Carpenter b.
Louisa Shewall Carpenter b. Jan 24 1839 Bennington, Bennington,, Vt
d. May 3, 1848 Bennington, Bennington, Vt.
---------------------------------------------------
I know this will either help or confuse the issue. I believe that
Richard went to Ohio with his brother John and then came back to
Bennington. The confusing factor is the land lease grant Barlow gave to
John in 1817.

on the VR books I found a John Carpenter JR born Sept, 9 1821 Dover VT to John Carpenter and lucena Thompson
also Jonathan Carpenter b. 1834 in Dover Vt to same parents
to John Carpenter and lucena Thompson dates do jive with other children

Lucina or Lucena Thompson

POSSIBLE DUPLICATE.

17414. Lydia Lorne Carpenter

Number 8627 in the Carpenter Memorial on page 802.

John.
I find it quite a coincidence that John Carpenter/Lois had a
daughter Lydia Lorne born in 1853, and John Carpenter  had a Lydia Lorne
Carpenter born Mar 15, 1819 in Dover Windham, Vt per LDS batch#7450047,
source call no. 0027501 film. John/Lois didn't get married until 1827.
Is this the sister of John who married Lois?  If so them we know that
John of John/Lois father was also a John.
       Gene
P.S. It seems more than a coincidence as Lydia Carpenter I could
understand, but Lydia Lorne is not a common name."

NOTE:
I  (JRC) checked the IGI source of the Lydia Lorne Carpenter born Mar 15, 1819 in Dover Windham, VT with a father named John Carpenter per LDS batch #7450047, source call no. 0027501 film. See next.
