Edson Carpenter was born in Michigan on May 17, 1842. He was a 21 year old farmer when the war began. He volunteered on March 30, 1864, and became a recruit assigned to refill the ranks of the depleted First Minnesota. It had arrived back at Ft Snelling and was waiting to be mustered out of service. Edson was assigned to Company D. When the unit was mustered out on May 5, 1864, Edson and the other new recruits, were transferred to its successor unit, the First Battalion of Minnesota Infantry. A few of the veterans of the "Old First" re-enlisted and joined the Battalion as well. Edson was assigned to Company A. He was 5' 7 1/2" tall. He had blus eyes, auburn hair and a fair complexion.
On June 22, 1864, at the battle of Petersburg, a group of Minnesotans were cut off and captured. Edson was one of them. He was confined at Richnond on the 24th and sent to Lynchburg, Virginia, on the 29th. From there he was sent to Andersonville Prison. On Oct 31, 1864, he was sent briefly to Millen, Georgia. He was returned to Andersonville on Dec 31, 1864, and sent to the prison hospital suffering from diarrhea.
Edson was paroled at Jacksonville, Florida, on April 28, 1865. He was sent north to a hospital at Hilton Head, SC on May 11th, now suffering from chronic diarrhea. He was sent to the College Green Barracks on May 17th. He was again moved and on May 19th was sent to Benton Barracks, Missouri, arriving there on May 24th. (Benton Barracks is now the Fair Grounds Park in North St Louis.) Two days later he was sent to Minnesota, where he was mustered out of service on June 9, 1865.
Edson married Eda L L McClure of Anoka on Dec 24, 1867.
He died in Santiago, Sherburne County, Mn, on Dec 9, 1911.

Elizabeth Henion

E-MAIL:   Mary C. Henion Carpenter d/o Joseph H. Henion and Elizabeth "Lizzie"
Date:  Fri, 30 Mar 2001 From:  "The Hahn Family"
I was checking my records for the Sussex Co., NJ, Henion line and have found
the parents of the above Mary and probably the Elizabeth in the info I
received the other night as a result of a PML Search Result for Henion.  I'm
not sure what PML search means but I receive it secondhand from the
administrator of the Ackerman/Hennion rootsweb site.
I copied and photographed gravestones at Sparta Presbyterian Church Cemetery
in Sparta, NJ, several years ago.  My records show that Joseph H. Henion b.
19 Dec 1848 and died 14 June 1895 married Elizabeth "Lizzie" who was born
1848 (census).  She does not appear to have been buried with Joseph unless
it was just not noted on the stone.
Three daughters are buried with Joseph as follows:  Mary C. (Henion)
Carpenter, Nettie Henion (d. age 2), and Emma Henion (d. age 2).
Mary C. (Henion) Carpenter b. 6 May 1869 d. 17 June 1912 bur. Sparta
Presbyterian Churchyard, as copied from gravestone.
Joseph and Lizzie also had a daughter Lizzie b. 1871 and apparently not
buried with her father.  This could be the Elizabeth Henion from your data.
I believe 1871 is from census records done by my fellow Hennion researcher
who lives in Utah.
I hope this is of interest to you.
Cheryl Hennion Hahn
