Henry J. Carpenter was born 13 July 1817 in New York State, probably near Dundee in Yates County where his father and grandfather (or in Steuben County) had gone after the Revolutionary War. He died 28 August 1872 at Springville, Lenawee Co., Michigan and is buried here as well. His wife was Azubah Ostrander, daughter of Andrew Ostrander and his wife Betswey Eldridge.
