>     Ironton Register, Thursday, April 14, 1892
>     EDITOR REGISTER - I see in the St. Louis Republic a
>statement from Portsmouth, Ohio, that on the old farm of
>Joshua Kelley's at Union furnace landing, and under the old
>house there was unearthed a lot of human skeletons, that
>produced a sensation among  the citizens in that part of the
>country. When I read it, it did not surprise me in the
>least. I  was raised one mile above Hanging Rock on the old
>Wm. Carpenter farm, and one mile  below Ironton and left
>there in 1841 to come to Missouri when I was 8 to 12 years
>old. I used to visit John Kelly's mid one-half mile below
>Union Landing and often went up to  the Kelly farm before
>the Union furnace landing was established to look at old
>Indian mounds not far from the landing in the Kelly field,
>to find old bones of humans, dogs, horses, deer and other
>animals. It was said then to me, by old settlers, old aunt
>Amy  Davidson wife of ------- Davidson, that there used to
>be an old Indian town there, and on the John Kelly farm just
>below it, and at an early day it had been a battle ground of
>the  Indians and many were killed and buried there. After
>the Ohio river had been up in the  spring of the year, the
>banks caved off from Union landing to opposite Mrs. Austin's
>old
>brick house, and there were many human and other bones left
>on the bank after the water went down. I with other boys
>have picked up five or more barrels of them when  we went to
>mill, and waiting for our grist. I heard my grand father,
>Samuel Clark, who did the work on John Kelly's log house, in
>the Fall of 1804, say that while he was there at work, some
>of the work hands found close to the line between the Kelly
>farm and the Austin farm a pile of lead bullets; that filled
>a peck measure full; and when digging the cellar for the
>Kelly house, in the southwest corner of the cellar, about 4
>feet down, they dug up big human skeletons that were nearly
>7 feet long and the jaw bone with teeth in it would slip
>over the jaw bone outside of the flesh of grandfather's face
>and not press it
>any. He was 5 feet 9 inches high and weighed 165 pounds. The
>leg bone from the knee  joint to the ankle joint would, put
>on the floor, come to the top of his knee; and that there
>was a bone spear in the shape of a straight knife blade 11
>inches long found with the skeletons when dug up there.
>            I have heard many thrilling stories told about
>the Indian doings at the head of the Ferguson bar in the
>river at and below Union Landing; of the murdering of a
>whole family going down the river in what was then called
>family boats, made to move down the river  in taking the
>family and stock in the boat, and the bar in the river
>forced the boats close  to the bank there, they became an
>easy prey to the Indians and many of them were murdered for
>what they had in their boats. These things were talked of
>many times by  the old settlers, such as the Trumbos,
>Austins, Dollarhides, grandmother Yingling, Mr.
> Gillruth, Mr. Neff, father of George and Jacob and
>grandfather of Gabriel and Samuel Neff and by Mr. Osborne
>and Mr. Norman who lived at the mouth of the branch at

>Mr. Norman, who lived at the mouth of the branch, on the
>lower side of the branch. The upper branch, Osborne run,
>that divided the old Bartles farm from the Hanging Rock the
>place just where the road crossed the bridge just west of
>the ground occupied by widow Ellison, west of the Ellison
>house. And on the farm just opposite, where I was engaged,
>on the old Clancey  farm, there were many Indian mounds full
>of human bones; that many of them were  thrown out the
>ground by plow. I have heard old Mr. Warnoch and old Mr.
>Dugans talk of
>the big Indian town on that and the Mead farms and the
>stories they told would make the hair stand straight on

Child per Larry:
1) John S (1787-1861), see attached for records showing marriage index identifying his wife as Joanna McGee, 1850 Census, death index which indicates he was born about 1786/87 and he was the only child I have found that was born in New York ... death register (attached) also indicates his parents were John and Anna Carpenter
Larry has the following note for ...
John S Carpenter: oldest son of John and Ann Carpenter

3) 1820 Census Records: he is listed as John Jr. for the 1820 US Federal Census, Eastern Monongalia County VA Census; it is the same record that contains the record for John (124706) ... the children seem to match those in the household, i.e., 2 males [John & William] under 10, a female 10-15 [Lourenna], and a female under 10 [Nancy] ... the only discrepancy I can see is that family records indicate a 3rd daughter (Phoebe) was born in 1816, but I can find no records of her living, marriage, or death; thus, Phoebe may have died before the 1820 Census ... and, the 1820 records indicate the adults were 45+ which might simply be an error ... bottom-line, I think there is a very good chance that the records for "John Jr." for the 1820 census matches John S (124944).

This image is difficult to read, but this is a JPEG that you can extract … about half way down you will find Carpenter John S … it is easier to look to the far right for Carpenter and then pan back to left … record indicates that John S Carpenter was 74+ in 1861 when he died; this would have made his birth year to have been 1787 … his parents are listed as John and Anne Carpenter … the record indicates he was born in New York … interestingly right above his record is that of a 5-year old Carpenter; of interest is that the parents were J. M. and Sarah Carpenter.

Marion County History
Marion County was created by an act of the Virginia Assembly on January 14, 1842, from parts of Harrison and Monongalia counties. The county was named in honor of General Francis Marion (1732-1795), the legendary hero of the American Revolutionary War.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fairmont,_West_Virginia
Fairmont is a city in Marion County, West Virginia, United States. ... It is the county seat of Marion County. ...
It was incorporated on January 19, 1820 as Middletown. It is unknown if the town was called Middletown because of its location mid-way between Clarksburg and Morgantown or because Boaz Fleming's first wife, Elizabeth Hutchinson, was originally from Middletown, Delaware. Middletown was named newly formed Marion County's first county seat on February 18, 1842.
At that time, William Haymond, Jr. suggested that the town's name be changed to Fairmont because the town had a beautiful overlook of the Monongahela River, giving it a "fair mount."
The Borough of Fairmont was incorporated in 1843 by the Virginia General Assembly."
Established in 1820 as Middletown, then in Monongalia County, it was chartered by the Virginia General Assembly in 1843 as Fairmont, a contraction of "Fair Mountain".

Palatine, Marion County WV (history)
... In 1838, Palatine was established opposite Middletown [which is on the west bank] on the east bank of the Monongahela river [within a large oxbow].
... [William] Haymond [Jr.], along with Jacob Polsley's sons, Daniel and John, laid out the town of Palatine in 1838, and was legally formed in 1867.
...  In 1899, Palatine became part of the city of Fairmont.

9349. Ashman Carpenter

Child per Larry:
Ashman was proved son of David and David had parents John & Ann Carpenter.
Descendant tested Y-DNA shows Group 3 - Rehoboth, MA Carpenter Y-DNA - Not Group 7 Y-DNA.

NAME: Ashman D. Carpenter - Several of his children have his middle initial listed on their death records.
and ...
Middle initial D has no proof per Larry Carpenter:
Ashman D. Carpenter, b. 26 Apr 1801 ... this was my grandfather's great-grandfather; I had many discussions with Ashman's great-grand-children back in the late 50s/60s, i.e., Ora, Cora, Eloda, Walter, Lulu, and Columbus ... none of our family records, nor the US Census, nor any records in the WV Culture Vital Records website show that his middle initial was "D" ... one of his sons was named David and David did name one of his sons David Ashman Carpenter ... family records are sketchy in that someone name John Carpenter migrated from NY to (W)Va; but after that good documentation exists for the families of Ashman->David->Albert->Walter->Oscar->Me.

BIRTH:  26 Apr 1801 based on AFN 1W77-L23 & D050-L1 - no documentation given or found. See also AFN 1SVM-8NH which lists the name as "Ashmond."

Note: This image is typed.  And the info for Ashman's marriage is typed twice on the second page with the same info.
On the first page is a John Carpenter who married Mary Bunner on 18 April 1820 and the marriage was executed by Joshua Hickman.
COMMENT:  by Larry Carpenter
1) WV Culture Marriage Registry indicates that Ashman and Emelia were married in 15 June 1822 ... however, this is a typed document; thus, somewhere along the line someone attempted to recreate the original document ... original thoughts were that this was done in error, but since Ashman/Emelia are in between several other 1822 marriages then I accepted that the marriage did occur in 1822.

CHILDREN:
If the first known marriage is 4 Jun 1822, then where did children Lavina C-131117 b. 3 Apr 1819 and Uriah C-128117 b. 8 Jan 1821 come from? Either the birth dates are wrong or we have another marriage?
Larry Carpenter comments ...
5) Overall Observation: from my notes, I questioned the two individuals as they were born prior to the marriage AND 6-8 years prior to any of their reported siblings ... the space in years for the remainder of the family is 1-4 years.
I had a note (theory) that Ashman & Emily probably did not wait 5 years to have their first child; although possible it just seems to me that getting married in 1822 and not having your first child (Catherine Louisa) until 1827 seems odd ... my theory was that Lovina was probably born soon after the marriage in, e.g.,1822, and that Uriah was probably born a couple of years later, i.e., around 1824/25; this would have nicely placed them in the spacing with the other children; HOWEVER, I never have found any official records to support my theory.

... In the late 1820's to early 1830's almost all of this family of Carpenters save David G, thought that it would be a great idea to move to the middle of Ohio and start farming there. Didn't last long though, 6 or 7 years later most everyone moves back with some exceptions.

E-MAIL:
Larry wrote on 5 April 2016 to the possible Group 3a (not 3b) & related group which I recap and comment on.
Larry wrote:  1) Ashman (125406) was married several times; WV Culture records for his 3rd marriage to Elizabeth Stanley (maiden name was Robinson, but used her widowed name on marriage record); the record indicates his parents were John and Ann Carpenter ... if Asman's father was John M (10030) and he married Sarah Radcliff, then we need to verify that her middle name on nickname was Ann or determine the record is in error.
I had missed the 1856 marriage record in citing parent names. I cite it in full, see [MARRIAGE: 1856 below.]
John Carpenter is once again cited as the father just like his brother David Gs record that has J. Carpenter.
The mother is cited as Ann Carpenter and her maiden name is not given. Some have assumed it is Miller. His brothers record cites mother a R. Carpenter, maiden name not given.
Larry is right, many times middle names were used as the common name. Excellent point!
Larry wrote: 2) Not sure this shows anything other than a relationship, but Ann Carpenter's testimony in a Revolutionary War Pension Record indicates Ann was a sister to Mary Miller who lived in Orange County NY ...
This is where the association with the surname Miller comes from. Likely Miller was the sisters married name and not a maiden name. His later comments sounds reasonable and the conclusion reasonable based on the information of movement from NY to VA (now WV) by the sisters family.
But, the only proper sic genetic line I found went from NJ to VA (now WV) before many descendants went to OH. See the quandary?
Larry wrote: 3) Early land record shows John Carpenter's heirs sold land in Marion County (W)Va in the late 1830s which was the timing of John's death: David (Ashman's brother) was the administrator.
This is were most show that John Carpenter by or before 1837. For them to have sold land there was likely a will, probate or other documents. That would be nice to find!
And please cite all those land records. Someone may see something that another does not. We can do far more by team work and make less mistakes!
Larry, Thank You for rededicating your self to this challenge!
Good Hunting! John R. Carpenter

BIRTH-MARRIAGES-DEATH: "Carpenters of the South", SLC FHL 929.273 C225ctl, entitled "John of Monongalia Cny WV," page 2, prepared by Terry L. Carpenter of Memphis, Tennessee.  "Ashman Carpenter, born 26 Apr 1801, died 6 Dec 1886, married first Emily Martin on 4 June 1821, second Eliza A. (Robinson) Stanley on 1 Jan 1865."  His children were listed as: Uriah, Ethan, Louisa, John, David, Rowena, and Ashmond Jr.  See C-3, #1 in the files of Janet Gesas Hornick, Englewood, CO.  NOTE: the 1850 Census incorrectly reports Ashman and his son and grandson as "Ashmond."  Further, it appears that Ashman was married three times with Eliza as his third wife.

BIRTH-MARRIAGES-CHILDREN-DEATH: Information from Paul Shroyer, April 2000: Ashman Carpenter, b. April 26, 1801, Mon. Co., W.Va; d. December 06, 1886, Marion Co., W.Va."  See "Carpenter - Shroyer" in Word files of Jan Hornick.

SPOUSE-SON: Ancestral File, 1993 Edition provided Ashman Carpenter and Emily Martin as the parents of David Carpenter born 1833 Marion Co., WV.  See C-3, #6.  NOTE: Patty Carpenter Helms reported by e-mail on June 3, 1998 that Ashman and Emily were married in Monongalia County.

THIRD MARRIAGE: "Taylor County WV Marriages; 1853-1905; FHL 975.455 V28c; Feb 1987; page 33: "Carpenter, Ashman, 63 (W), Marion Co.; Stanley, Eliza A., 47 (W), Ireland; Taylor Co."  Ashman's parents were given as John and Ann.  Eliza's parents were given as "_____ and _____ Robinson.  They were married 1 Jan 1865.

I ran across your name a couple of times regarding Lurenna (sp?) Carpenter and I know a little of her story from a Cyclopedia of the area produced in the late 1800's regarding John Harr (Son of Richard Harr and Lurenna Carpenter Harr). Do you have any good leads on when/where Lurenna's father came from? I've got a lot of local court proceedings info on him (road maintainence and other common issues of the time) and land purchases (he liked to buy land) but can't nail down who his father was. I recently sent off some DNA samples for y-DNA analysis and while they are not entirely finished with the processing, I match either the Providence or (more likely given that my family comes through Ashman (Lurenna's brother)) the Rehoboth branch (these two branches are so closely related they need to run additional assays to determine which one)."  Resolved to Group 3. BIRTH-SPOUSE-DEATH-BURIAL: Bunner Cemetery; Fairmont, Marion County, WV; USGENWEB on 25 Oct 1997.  NOTE: Her name is given in this source as "Lovina".  CORRECTION: From the website http://www.wvpics.com/bunnercemetery.htm: "Bunner, Lavina Apr 3, 1819 - May 23, 1911, w/ Jacob."  Jacob is buried there, also.

MARRIAGE: FHL Film 464, 975, Marion County Marriages 1842-1865: "Jacob Bunner and Lavina Carpenter, Sept. 20, 1842."  Record Book A, page 3.  See I, page 109.

CENSUS: 1850 Virginia, Marion County Census; DPL Film 1850-VA, page 123: Dwelling 160/161: Jacob "Boner", Farmer, 28 (could be 25); Luvina or Luvinnia, 27, f.  Both born in Virginia.  See VI, page 2.   NOTE: No children are listed.

CENSUS: 1900 West Virginia, Marion County, Winfield Census; ancestry.com: "Bunner, Jacob, Head, May 1819, 81, married 57 years; Lovina, Wife, Apl 1819, 81, married 57 years; 0 children born."  NOTE: They and their parents were born in West Va.

CENSUS: 1910 West Virginia, Marion County, Winfield District Census; E.D. 76, Family #13: "Carpenter, Jacob B., Head, [appeared to be] 33 [prob 53], M2, married 22 years; Lavina, wife, 44, M1; Vista G., Dau, 15; Harry C., Son, 9; and Bunner, Jacob Sr., Head, 91, M1; Lavina, Wife, 91, M1, married 71 years."  All born in West Virginia. See C-7, #2b.  NOTE: Jacob and Lavina (Carpenter) Bunner were living with Lavina's brother David's son.

PARENTS-SIBLINGS-SPOUSE: "History of Marion County, WV"; 1985; FHL 975.454 H2h, Q Area, page 119 submitted by Sherry Carpenter Heston. See M-24. CONFLICT: "Luvina married Jacob Bunner.  They had no children."

More Larry Carpenter notes:
2) Lovina or Luvina Carpenter: I only have family records that she was Ashman's first child born in 3 Apr 1819 and died in 23 May 1911 ... she only shows up in the 1870, 1900, and 1910 Federal Census; and her age for each was 48, 81, and 91 which would translate into birth years of 1822, 1819, and 1819 ... HOWEVER, the only official records are her marriage record and her death registration (listed her age at death was 92 in 1911 which would translate into a 1819 birth-year); neither record makes any mention that she was the child of Ashman and Emily (Emelia) ... I kept her listed as the first child, but it is with some degree of uncertainty because of the birth years and Ashman/Emily's year of marriage.

18133. Ethan Carpenter

PARENTS-MARRIAGES: "Carpenters of the South", SLC FHL 929.273 C225ctl, Chapter entitled "John of Monongalia Cny WV," page 2, prepared by Terry L. Carpenter of Memphis, Tennessee.  "Ethan Carpenter, born 16 Mar 1825 in Marion Cny WV, died 7 Aug 1915, married first c 1848 to Matilda Weaver (born Dec 1824 or Jan 1825, daughter of Uriah M. and Rebecca (Mitchell) Weaver), second Martha Friel."  His children are listed.  See C-3, #1 in the files of Janet Gesas Hornick, Englewood, CO. QUESTION: Were all his children born to Matilda?  NOTE: His place of birth was given as Marion County, West Virginia.  Neither Marion County nor West Virginia were in existence in 1825.  The parent county from which Marion was formed was Monongalia, thus he was most likely born in Monongalia, Virginia.

CONFLICT-MARRIAGES: "Some Martin Cousins", Martin and Bayless, 1979, FHL 929.273 M363md, page 223: "Ethan Carpenter (grandfather of Mrs. Burr Marsh of Upshur Co.-about Rock Cave) was born in Barbour Co., and he m. Matilda Weaver, also a dau of John (as was Almira Jane Weaver who married Simeon Carpenter of Upshur County who was a grandson of Daniel, b. Barbour Co, 22 Dec 1829). NOTE: I find in Upshur County Court House the following:  Ethan Carpenter, widower, age 56, m. 17 Feb 1881 to Martha E. Friel, age 48, b. Barbour Co. His parents: Daniel and Louvennia Carpenter; her parents: Reuben W. & Elizabeth.  I feel sure this is the same Ethan as above.  But I have been told that Ethan's father was named William."  These notes were copied from Upshur County Court House by Mary B. Carpenter.  See M-17.  QUESTION: Were there two Ethan Carpenters??

FURTHER CONFLICT-SPOUSES-CHILDREN: "History of Marion County, WV"; 1985; FHL 975.454 H2h Q Area; page 119 submitted by Sherry Carpenter Heston: "Ethan married Matilda True.  They had two sons: Henry and Uriah.  His second wife was Clorisinda Fast.  They had one daughter, Emilie Jane."  See M-24.

See C-2, #1 and VI, page 2.  NOTE: Ethan lived next to his father, Ashman, and his brother, Uriah.
CONFLICT: If Ethan were 23 in 1850, and he was born the month of March, then he would have been born in 1827.

MILITARY: Ethan served in the Civil War in the Union Army, Company F. Information from Robert Hershman via GEDCOM/e-mail, 17 Apr 1998.

BURIAL: Cathy Layton, spaz.tbone@gte.net, reported 5 Aug 2001: "Daniel's father, Ethan Carpenter and both his wives are also buried at Bethleham.'  [Cathy reported that Bethleham Cemetery is located in Upshur County, WV.]

Child per Larry:
7) David (1803-1886), Jeff should have a lot of supporting documentation.
PARENT:  John & Ann Carpenter

NAME:
Middle initial G. not confirmed. But, George is a very common name in this descent line.
Lary, Randal & Jeff confirm that the G. is not proven.

BIRTH-SPOUSE-DEATH-BURIAL: Information from Patty Helms, April and May 1998, via e-mail.  NOTE: Both David and Sarah are buried at Maple Grove Cemetery. POSSIBLE RE-MARRIAGE: "Marion County WV Marriages, 1842-1899", SLC FHL 975.454 V2m, page 147: "Carpenter, David, 82, (W) (widower), Marion; West, Eliza Ann, 66 (W), Marion; June 17, 1886."  See IV, 51b.  NOTE: Patty Carpenter Helms reported this is probably correct.  If so, married in June, died in November.

DEATH:  "Marion County Deaths" SLC FHL 975.454 V23m, page 206: "Carpenter, David, b. Mar 1803, Marion Co. son of J. & R. Carpenter, d. 1 Nov. 1886, Marion Co. W. Virginia. (Married.)  See M-10, #1 in the files of Jan Hornick. CONFLICT: This date is Mar 1803. Patty Helm's data has 7 Jul 1803.  QUESTION: Is the "R." correct?   Is this the "unplaced" David Carpenter discussed by Terry Carpenter?  It would seem so.  Also, is this the same David Carpenter, 82, above?  NOTE: He would have been married 4 1/2 mo before he died.

COMMENT:  Larry indicates this is item is resolved.

?PARENTS-MARRIAGE: "Carpenters of the South", SLC FHL 929.273 C225ctl, Chapter entitled "John of Monongalia Cny WV," 1990, page 3; information prepared by Terry L. Carpenter of Memphis, Tennessee: David Carpenter, born 1804, married Susanna W. Sheets on 24 Apr 1824; ? died before 1828, when his "widow" married Parker C. Perviance, or living in 1850?  Terry also had an "Unplaced" who was a "David Carpenter, born c1803 in VA, married Sarah --- c 1834, who resided in Marion Cny VA in 1850 with children: Margaret A., born c 1835; Thomas, born c1843; George M., born c1848, no further information."  See C-3, #1 in the files of Janet Gesas Hornick, Englewood, Colorado.  NOTE: His parents were given as John Carpenter and Nancy Miller, for the first listing of David Carpenter.  CONFLICT: THIS David Carpenter was probably NOT the David who married Susanna.  That David was possibly this David's uncle.  See information from Patty Helms, C-9.
See COMMENT above.

BIRTH-MARRIAGE-CONFLICTS: "Some Martin Cousins", Martin and Bayless, 1979, FHL 929.273 M363md, page 222: "Carpenter, David G., b. 1804 m. 28 Apr 1824 Susanna W. 'Sheits'.  David was 56 in Aug 18, 1860 Fed. Cen. of 3rd Magis Dist. PO Boothsville, Marion Co., W.Va., page 39."  See M-17.  NOTE: This data was submitted by Mary B. Carpenter, Star Route 6, Box 198, Lewisburg, W.Va, 24901. CONFLICT: The above information from Terry Carpenter indicated David may have died before 1824 if Susana remarried.  Needs further research  CONFLICT: On 29 Nov 1997 Patty Helms reported that THIS David married Sarah Mundell.

Reference [to] Jeff ... and Larry's B) reference: I too do not know where the "G" is identified as accurate. Nothing I have found evidences that "G" middle initial. I know with 100% certainty my 2nd great grandfather, named as executor of David's estate and as the informer of death of David Carpenter, is George W. Carpenter. Genealogically, of the sons and daughters of Geo. W. Carpenter and Matilda Catherine Carrico had, one is my great grandfather Charles Scott Carpenter who married Effie May Reeves. They in-turn had Ester Gertrude, Genevieve, John (who died abt. 14 years of age) and my grandfather George Rex Carpenter.
Again I am not aware of nor in possession of any evidence of David Carpenter's middle initial.
As an aside Matilda Catherine Carrico's father was apparently a Methodist minister in Marion County and performed many marriages throughout the various Carpenter families. At least one of those according to WV Cultural records and Patty Carpenter-Helms, were performed at Geo. W. Carpenter's which coincides with the land which was his father David's and previously John and and Ann's. The last per information acquired via Patty Carpenter-Helms and other sources.
Although specific to my line, David, Geo. W., Charles Scott, Geo. Rex, my grandfather' s mother, Effie's, father, was 100% known by us and I have paper documentation, to be John Wesley Reeves. John Wesley Reeves was the son of Abner Reeves who fathered among other children, a daughter Mary Elizabeth Reeves who was the wife of Thomas J. Carpenter, a brother of Geo. W. and one of the sons of David Carpenter and Sarah Mundell-Carpenter. Per Patty Carpenter-Helms, and other sources, Thos. and Mary Elizabeth Reeves-Carpenter lived on part of the original John and Ann Carpenter property in Marion County across the road so to speak from David, then Geo. W., and Charles Scott.
If I can help with any further on my line don't hesitate to ask. Thank you for the work you collectively are pouring into this!
Returning to David Carpenter, I've seen one or so mentions throughout parts of this quest of David remarrying. Thanks in large part to Jeff and Patty, I found the digitized marriage record and David's estate record indicating he did in fact re-marry literally months before he passed away in 1886.
Sincerely,
Randall Scott Carpenter

9358. Samuel Carpenter

Samuel went to Kansas in 1874 and located at Oswego, where he engaged in the mercantile business and resided until his death, which occurred in 1903, the last fifteen years of his life being spent in retirement.

Resided in Bloomfield, Ia. and Oswego,,KS  Sarah B
Montgomery's father was a large land and slave owner of Bedford
,,TN  and traces his ancestry to the Montgomery's of
Revolutionary time and to county Antrim in Ireland.  Samuel
Carpenter embarked in the mercantile business in ill;; at
Palmetto ,TN with his brother-in-law Robert S Montgomery and
was very successful     During the civil war he and the
Montgomery's were loyal to the Union Samuel being a rank
abolitionist absolutely refusing to own slaves or traffic in
them.  His store was destroyed by the rebels in 1862 and he was
taken prisoner by Morgan's guerrillas and barely escaped with
his life; after which he hastily collected what property he
could and through the influence of his brother John a
confederate officer he was allowed to pass the rebel lines and
with his family and father started north.  He  located at
Bloomfield Iowa and again embarked in the mercantile business
and was remarkably successful. Owing to the rigorous climate of
Iowa his father died there and also his father-in-law, Thomas
Montgomery,  who also had to leave the south.     Thus these two
old patriots sleep their last sleep side by Side because of
their loyalty to their country and flag. In 1865 Samuel returned
to Tennessee where he resided until 1874, when he with his
family moved to ,KS and located at Oswego, in Labette ,
erecting the first business block in that town and he still
resides there though retired from business.  He is an elder in
the Presbyterian church and has been a member of the same from
his youth.
