PARENTS: Possibles
- Maybe Nathaniel Carpenter-70678 - Group 3 line? NO. He was born Charles Nathaniel Carpenter b. abt Apr 1850 IL from his father Nathaniel C-68937 (b. abt 15 Sep 1792 MA) and his second wife Emily Teague b. abt 1817 ME).
- Maybe descendant of Nathaniel C-28305 b. 1799/1800 NY? - NO. Group 2
- I did a list of Descendants of William C-584 then used births in NY and any place containing OH, males, born 1775 to 1805 and got 25 names. All but the following were easily eliminated.
Ezra C-46127
1) Ira C-185089 - barely possible first marriage?
2) Jacob C-25813 - maybe undocumented children?
3) James C-67502 - barely possible first marriage?
4) John C-194374 - interesting - b. NY, unk 1st wife, child b. 1825 OH then movement to IN and marrying with children b. in IN and he dying in IA in 1877.
5) Joseph C-95188 - possible first marriage?
6) Moses C-22839 - maybe - child b. NY in 1827 - maybe some b. in OH earlier???
7) Robert C-13179 - need to look for marriages before 1831 - He was b. abt 1784  NY d. OH 1851.
8) Samuel C-145488 - missing children - wife b. CT - M. OH 1809 -
9) Thomas C-130643 - barely possible first marriage?

NOTE:
Per common children naming tecchniques ...
First son James may have been named after the father <---- matches up
Second son Hezekiah named after the father in law    <--------- matches up
First daughter Mary -  often named after the father's mother <---- matches up - her name was Maria
Second daughter Sarah often after the mother in law
The above of course is speculation.

NOTE:
Cumberland County, IL was form in 1843 from Coles County.

Gilbert Carpenter Passes away Last Friday
Was 91 years of age and came to the Big Sioux Valley to Live about 44 years ago.
Gilbert Wallace Carpenter one of the pioneer residents of the Big Sioux Valley died Friday evening June 2nd at the home of his daughter, Mrs. G. P. Lake after an illness of little over a week, at the age of nearly 91 years. In spite of his advanced age he has always been in good health and his death comes as a shock to all who know him.

Mr. Carpenter was born in Ohio Sept 13, 1825. He came to Iowa and located near Akron 44 years ago this month. In 1847 he was united in marriage with Miss Alpha Elam. Five children were born to them, three of whom died in infancy, and one daughter Mrs. Fred Larkin in 1883. His wife died in 1867. Although of quiet and retiring nature he has endeared himself to those with whom he came in contact and “Pap”, as he was called by all who knew him will be greatly missed.

Most of his immediate family have preceded him in death, but surviving him are on sister, Mrs. Sarah Beatty of Oklaoma City, one daughter Mrs. G. P. Lake of this city, with whom he has made his home, nine grandchildren, nineteen great grandchildren and three great great grandchildren.

Three grandsons, Ed Larkin of Hudson, Lake larkin of Sioux Falls, Fred Larkin of Chatsworth and three nephews, James, John and Charles Carpenter of Chatsworth acted as pall bearers.

Brief services were held at the home Sunday afternoon and his body was laid to rest beside his loved ones in the little Mt. Hope Cemetery in Union County, south west of Chatsworth.

Sue Carpenter Lake
Birth: 15 Sep 1857
Death: 18 Apr 1930 (aged 72)
Burial: Grace Hill Cemetery, Hawarden, Sioux County, Iowa, USA
Memorial #: 126656741
Bio:
Mrs. G.P. Lake, a pioneer resident of Union county and a long time resident of Hawarden, passed away at her home here at 11 o'clock last Friday morning. Although Mrs. Lake had been in poor health for the past 22 years her death came suddenly and peacefully. It was known that her condition was critical but she was up less than an hour before she passed away and talked with those about her. For a number of years during her long illness she was tenderly cared for by her daughter, Miss Alpha, who spared no efforts in doing all she could to relieve her constant suffering.
Funeral services were held at the home at 2:30 Sunday afternoon with Rev. G.A. Patterson, pastor of the Baptist church, in charge. Interment was made in Grace Hill cemetery. Her two grandsons, Philip and George March, her two grand nephews, Lester Wakeman of Sioux Falls and Gilbert Wakeman of Akron, and J.E. Tilgner and Rayford Anderton acted as pall bearers.
Sue Carpenter was born near Springfield, Ill., Sept. 15, 1857, and passed away in Hawarden April 18, 1930, having attained the age of 72 years, 7 months and 3 days. She came to Union county with her sister and family in a covered wagon when she was but 14 years old and they located near Akron. She was united in marriage with George Palmer Lake Oct. 14, 1877, and to this union were born three children, one of whom, Agnes M. precede her in death Nov. 17, 1925. Mr. Lake passed away Oct. 28th of last year. After her marriage she lived on a farm four miles southwest of Big Springs until 1892 when with her family she moved to Hawarden. After the death of her sister, Mrs. Mattie Larkin, with whom she came west, she looked after the needs of her six nieces and nephews and was practically a mother to these young children. She united with the Baptist church in Akron when a young girl and when she came to Hawarden she united with the local Baptist church. Later she united with the First Baptist church in Sioux City and she remained loyal to her faith until her death. Besides her two daughters, Mrs. Elizabeth March of Vermillion, and Miss Alpha Lake of Hawarden, she is survived by two grandsons, Philip and George March, and one great granddaughter, all of Vermillion, and six nieces and nephews.
Out of town relatives and friends who attended the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. Lester Wakeman, Lake Larkin, Mr. and Mrs. Lou Crammond and Miss Catherine Crane of Sioux Falls; Mrs. Gust Johnson of Montrose, S.D.; Mr. and Mrs. Ed Larkin of Le Mars; Mr. and Mrs. Geo. Wakeman, Mr. and Mrs. Gilbert Wakeman and Mrs. E.E. Mellon of Akron; Mr. and Mrs. Fred Larkin of Vermillion and Mrs. Cora Holten of Sioux City.

Birthday dinner for Three Saturday evening, July 19, Mr. and Mrs. A. L. Carpenter of South Cherry Street entertained at an eight o'clock dinner in honor of their three granddaughters the Misses Eva Ladesa Johnson, Bethe Belle Mertz and Florence Mae Brown, whose birthdays are all in the month of July.
A four course dinner was served and the color scheme of Nile green and white was very prettily carried out. Carnations of the two shades were used to decorate the table. A birthday cake, standing fourteen inches high with a candle to represent each year in the ages of the three girls, stood in the center of the table.
The three girls were cleverly dressed in evening gowns of Nile green. House games were played during the evening after which a program consisting of readings and musical selections were given
At 12 o'clock the birthday cake was cut by the three girls and hot coffee and waters were served. Much merriment was had where the futures fortunes were found in the pieces of cake.
The invited guests for the evening were: Miss Ian Gerrals and Messrs Donald Holt and Forrest Cory all of Ames IA; Miss Mae Bowers and H. J. Bowers of Fort Dodge; Aden Arnold, Paul Arnold, Miss Dorothy Outtrim and Mrs. Mae Mertz of this City.
