Notes for Charles Carr Carpenter:
Pepin County Courier; Friday, October 5, 1882; Stockholm News
"Again the citizens of our town have to mourn the death of one of their number. Mr. C. C.
Carpenter dead at his residence on the 27th. For more than a quarter century Mr. Carpenter
enjoyed the respect and confidence of his community, and it is with sad hearts that they followed
his remains to their last resting place on Friday last. He was buried on a little eminence beneath
sheltering branches of a leafy oak near the hearth stone which only knew him as an affectionate
husband and father, and an obliging neighbor. The sorrowing family have the sympathy of the
community in their hours of grief and mourning."

Charles Carr Carpenter - Historical and Biographical Album of the Chippewa Valley Wisconsin....
ancestral records of leading families......." 1891-1892

"Charles Carr Carpenter (deceased) was born in Newburg(h), NY, April 26, 1827, and died in
Stockholm, WI, September 27, 1882. His ancestors were living in Newburg when Gen. Washington
made that place his headquarters. His parents, Wilkins and Millicent (Watkins) Carpenter, had
three children; Phoebe Ann (Mrs. C. Wood), Charles Carr, and Verdine E. who died in the service
of his counry during the rebellion. While Charles was still a small boy, his father died, and his
mother afterward married Nathan Lockwood, by whom she also had three children; Submit (Mrs. H
Brewer) Lockwood, Samuel Lockwood, and George Lockwood, now a practicing physician at
Rome, Wisconsin. In 1846 the family removed to Jefferson county, Wisconsin, setttling first in
Concord and later at Rome, where Mr. and Mrs. Lockwood died a few years since. Charles C.
received a fair education for those times, and learned the trade of weaver in a factory at Newburg.
In 1855, he came to Stockholm and purchased 160 acres of wild land, and began to make
improvements thereon. He was married at Concord, Wisconsin, July 24, 1860 to Miss Martha Jane
Quiner. Her parents, Henry and Charlotte (Tucker) Quiner were old settlers of Jefferson County,
WI. Mr. Quiner was a native of Boston. His mother, then an infant, occupied a cradle in a house
into which several shots were fired at the battle of Bunker Hill.

Soon after their marriage, Mr. and Mrs. Carpenter took up their abode at the farm in Stockholm,
where they became the parents of fourteen children, twelve of whom are still living: William
Augustus (deceased), Joseph Q, Lettie Jane, Nancy C, Martha E (deceased), Millicent Ann,
Charles Carr (now running the family farm), Emma B, Martha J, Caroline and Emeline M (twins),
and Thomas Q and George L (twins).

Mr. Carpenter spent the remainder of his life in the improvement and cultivation of the farm, where
most of the family still resides. He was a republican in politics, and served his townsmen as school
clerk, supervisor and justice of the peace.

Martha Jane Quiner

Her parents, Henry and Charlotte (Tucker) Quiner were old settlers of Jefferson County,
WI. Mr. Quiner was a native of Boston. His mother, then an infant, occupied a cradle in a house
into which several shots were fired at the battle of Bunker Hill.

Notes for Martha Jane Quiner:
Plainview News, Plainview MN, January 1927
"Pioneer Women of This Section Called Past Week"
"Mrs. Charles Carpenter, Twice Mother of Twins, Dies in This City Monday Night."
Mrs. Martha Jane Carpenter, resident of this city for the past sixteen years, passed away at the
home of her daughters, Misses Myrtlie and Marion Carpenter, at 9:30 Sunday evening, January 16,
1927, at the age of 89 years, two months, and ten days.

Martha Jane Quiner was born at Richmond, Indiana, on November 6th 1837, and two years later
moved with her parents to Milwaukee, Wis., later coming to Concord where on July 24, 1860, she
married to Charles Carr Carpenter. To this union were born fourteen children, nine girls and five
boys, all of whom lived to reach mature age except Martha Eliza, who died at the age of three
years.

In 1860, Mr. and Mrs. Carpenter moved to Stockholm, Wis., then a wilderness, where Mr.
Carpenter secured from the government a patent to a quarter section of land and proceeded to
make a home for his wife and family. Actively interested in her husband's work, Mrs. Carpenter
shared with him the hardships and burdens and won success which only comes by perseverance
and untiring effort. This farm still remains in the family, having been purchased by Thomas Q
Quiner.

Mrs. Carpenter was preceded in death by her husband September 27, 1882. Five children were
also called to answer the summons of death pervious to their mother, Martha Eliza, William A., Etta
M., Charles C., and Joseph Q. She is survived by two sisters, Mrs. Eliza Ingalls, aged 85, of
Winchester, Colorado, and Mrs. Lottie Moore of Ft. Atkinson, Wisconsin. Nine children are also left
to mourn the loss of a loving and patient mother all of whom were present at the bedside during
her last hours. They are: Mrs. Lettice J. Axtell and William A. Axtell of Pepin, Wisconsin, Mrs.
Emma B Longsdoft of Arkansaw, Wis., Mrs. Nancy C. White, Mrs. Martha Grieve, Misses Myrtle
and Marion Carpenter of Plainview, Thomas Q of Stockholm, Wis., and George L. of Washington
DC. Mrs John Bruce of Racine and Mrs. Earl Proue of Arkansaw, granddaughters of the deceased,
were also present at the bedside. Besides her immediate family, Mrs. Carpenter is mourned by 28
grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren.

Funeral services were held at the old farm home at Stockholm, Wis., on January 19, where many
friends of the deceased, who had known her for many years gathered to pay their last tribute to
one who had been a kind neighbor and true friend."

There are discrepancies on exactly where Martha Jane was born. On the Census forms where it
asks about birth, Martha is marked as born in Indiana. Also, most records I have come across,
state she was born in Indiana, however, I came across this biography by Charles Longsdorf (her
son-in-law) where he indicates she is from Connecticut. I believe he wrote that because her family
is from Connecticut, the latest record being the 1830 Census where her family is indeed there. But,
my 1840 they are in Brookfield, WI, so it is my belief that she was born some time in between on
the family's journey from Connecticut to Wisconsin.

(Exerpt from Charles Longsdorf Biography from History of Buffalo and Pepin Counties
Wisconsin.....)
When speaking about Charles' wife - Emma.... "daughter of Charles and Martha (Quiner)
Carpenter. Her father was a native of New York State and her mother of Connecticut......"
Excerpt of a letter Martha wrote on her first journey to Stockholm:

"we took a team to Janesville, Wisconsin, where we took the train to Prarie du Chien, Wisconsin
then went on a large boat to Lake City, Minnesota. Stayed overnight there and the next day went
across the beautiful lake and only walked a mile and a half to the farm to start our life work on the
farm, an honest and upright one, but an old fashion one....."

"At the time of Charles death, Martha was left with 13 children, the youngest twins only four months
old. She continued to run the farm, but at one point was forced to sell 40 acres. That land was later
repurchased by the family."

"On one occasion, the town board came to the farm to hold a meeting to discuss plans for
making a road run across the farm leading to Bogue Valley. Mrs. Carpenter was opposed to the
proposal. The meeting was held in Swedish, a language that she did not understand. This, the
board felt, was a way of settling the dispute. Martha was firm in her stand and argued that it was
illegal to conduct a meeting in a foreign language. The road was never constructed."

John,
Below is all I have compiled to date on descendants of Wait and Miraette
(HIGBY) Carpenter.  If I come across any additional I will forward it on to
you.  I am trying to find a living descendant of Beecher HIGBY - if you know
of any through Wait and Miraette's line I would greatly appreciate being put
in contact with one.  I am researching an historic building in Essex Co.
that Beecher designed and built.  My e-mail address is staudt@cptelco.net or
they could write me at:

Thank-you for the help you've given me!  I very much appreciate your time
and effort.
