I am trying to find out information on Clarissa's son
Albion Dyke. Albion married according to my grandmothers
records a Sarah Edmunds, however all other records show
he married a Sarah Mitchell. Can anyone help me solve this
problem?

10070. Ebenezer Carpenter

Same person or the older Ebenezer born in Cheshire county, NH?

The Dartmouth College Library bought the Papers of Judge Frederick Vose  from
Charles Apfelbaum, Rare Books and Collections, Valley Stream, New York, in
1987. A fine selection of records from early (1825-ca. 1855) Cheshire County,
New Hampshire courts, this collection will provide researchers with a rare
glimpse of the legal and economic problems faced by New Hampshire residents
during the mid-1800s. Although the majority of the suits were brought for
non-payment of debts, there are also cases concerning theft, assault and  battery,
breach of promise, divorce, arson, and the settlement of  estates.

10071. Enoch Carpenter

E-MAIL: Fri, 10 Mar 2000 From: Peg Carpenter
Hi Folks:
Would anyone have any info on the Carpenters from Littleton, NH or just
across the river in Concord, VT? My husband's great grandfather was Luther
Calvin b:2-Nov-1861. Luther's siblings were Mary Jane, Belle, Hod, and
Henrietta. I believe his father to be Enoch b: 1822-1826 in Littleton. Enoch
married a ----Goodale and his parents were Obadiah Carpenter and Nancy Morse
(b:11-May-1791 in Concord). Enoch may have had a sibling named Ebenezer.
Nancy Morse was the daughter of Joseph Wheat Morse and Susanna Bemies. Most
of the lists I'm on aren't as active as this one seems to be. Very nice.
Thanks.  Peg.
MORE: 04 Jun 2000 From: Peggy Carpenter
I'm hoping to find connections to anyone else who might be searching for
descendants of Luther (Lute) Calvin Carpenter. He was born to Enoch
Carpenter and Sarah Goodell on November 2, 1861 in Littleton, NH. Enoch
Carpenter died in Concord, VT by the time Luther was 17 at which point
Luther came west to Illinois. He arrived in Aurora by train about 1878
and went by horse and wagon to Montgomery, ILL. Luther met and married
Annette (Nettie) Davis and they had 16 children. Annette was the
daughter of Chester Davis and Sarah Vaughan and was born and raised in
Kendall County, Ill. The Davis' were from New York State. Lute and
Nettie's sixth child, Jesse Ray Carpenter (b:Nov. 1, 1889-Aurora,Ill.),
is the progenitor of our branch. If there is a fellow lister who has
connections to this line, please contact me.
Peg.

10081. John Wright Carpenter

UPDATE:  By "Robert McNeal"

Brimfield St. Cemetery
Brimfield St., Town of Kirkland

The following information was taken from Historical Sketch of the Old Clinton Burying Ground, published by J. B. & H. B. Sykes, 1896, Clinton, New York

Brimfield Street Burying Ground, by R. C. Ellinwood, pg. 25-26

This enclosure contains about seventeen rods.  The title to the same is in lease form, dated May 20, 1820, given by Nathan Marsh, of the first part, to Hannaniah Ellinwood, Nathaniel Butler, James Look, Jared Andews, Moses Dickinson, Reuben Ellinwood, Simeon Robbins, John W. Carpenter, William Carpenter, Augustus Carpenter, Eli Ellinwood, Samuel Coe, of Paris, and Charles Babcock of Whitestown, for and in consideration of five dollars, and the sum of two cents annual rental, payable May first, if legally demanded.  It is signed by Nathan Marsh, and the witnesses were Jeremiah Matthews and Adolphus Ellinwood.
By the above dates it appears this burial place has been used for interments seventy-six years, and possibly longer.  The remains of one soldier of the Revolution honors the enclosure as the guardian of his sleeping neighbors, the roll of whom is as follows:

Carpenter, Augustus died Nov. 21, 1873 age 81 yrs
Carpenter, Capt. John, of the Continental Army, borm at Brimfield, Mass 1739, died in the town of Kirkland 1805
Carpenter, Caroline, wife of Augustus Carpenter, died Oct. 18, 1885 age 87 yrs
Carpenter, John W. died Jan. 27, 1833 age 50 yrs
Carpenter, Sally, wife of John W. Carpenter, died May 24, 1856 age 53 yrs
Carpenter, Sarah, wife of William Carpenter, died Oct. 5, 1835 age 71 yrs
Carpenter, William died April 15, 1816 age 59 yrs
Carpenter, Winthrop, son of John W. Carpenter, died Oct. 30, 1846 age 43 yrs

_________________________________________

The 1830 Census for Oneida County, New York lists John W. Carpenter, age bet. 40-50, with 2 boys 20-30, 1 boy 15-20 and 1 boy 10-15, a wife bet. 40-50 and 1 girl 10-15.  He is listed between Augustus and William Carpenter.  In 1830, those boys would have been (probably); either Winthrop (27), Lewis (25) or John R. (23), all bet. 20-30, William F. Henry (18), bet. 15-20 and Orson (15) 10-15.  Girl would have been Harriett (10).  2 out of 3 sons living with him is consistent with reports of Lewis having died at a rather early age (i.e. "Sue and Don Ryan have Lewis, son Of John Wright Carpenter, as "dying young" in Kirkland, New York (suedonryan@mchsi.com)") and no other Carpenter heads of household being listed nearby.

ELEAZER W. CARPENTER was born in New Hampshire, June 23, 1827. His parents, Willard and Betsey (Wason) Carpenter, were natives of New Hampshire, the former having been born in 1789. They were married in 1812 and had two children--Miranda, born in 1820, and Eleazer W., born in 1827; the former died in 1863. The father died in New York in 1841, and the mother died in Wisconsin in 1864. Eleazer W. Carpenter was married November 13, 1854, to Miss Emily M., daughter of John and Hulda (George) Plumer. She was born in New Hampshire, June 25, 1830. Her father was born in 1808, and was the son of Nathaniel Plumer, who was born May 29, 1764. The family of E. W. Carpenter consists of seven children, namely--John W., born May 15, 1856; Stephen, born November 16, 1858; Hulda, born March 7, 1861; Cyril, born September 4, 1863; Marion, born March 31, 1866; Miranda, born October 14, 1868, and Lydia, born May 31, 1871. Mr. Carpenter went with his parents from their native state, in 1840, to New York, where, at the age of sixteen, he hired out by the month to work on a farm. His next move was to Wisconsin in 1854, where he was married and settled down to farming. He enlisted in September, 1864, in the First Regiment, Minnesota heavy artillery. His regiment was stationed at Chattanooga, Tenn., and performed garrison duty during most of the service. He was mustered out June 17, 1865. In the fall of 1872 he started West to prospect for his future home. He arrived at Gibbon, Buffalo county, Nebr., after a long and wearisome journey made with an ox team. He remained here until the following spring; in the meantime, however, he busied himself looking for a location. He was especially pleased with the land in the Cedar Creek valley, and he finally took up a homestead there. He built a frame house, sod being the material mostly employed at this early date. 1861-1865

There was scarcely any settlement in this section at that time, and wild game was plenty, especially deer and antelope. There were hundreds of wild-cats and beaver along the creek, and hunting and trapping constituted the chief occupation of several of the early settlers. Mr. Carpenter had barely succeeded in getting his family comfortably housed, when one of the severest storms in the history of the country began raging. It was a blizzard of the most pronounced type and lasted for three days, during which snow fell and drifted to a great depth. Hundreds of cattle and other stock, without shelter, perished.
In a sod house near Mr. Carpenter's dwelling, lived a lady by the name of Mrs. Davis. During the awful storm a part of the roof of the house fell in, and the poor woman, whose husband was away at the time, became alarmed and started out in the blinding storm in the hope, it is supposed, of reaching the home of Mr. Carpenter. Soon after the storm ceased it was ascertained that Mrs. Davis was missing; a diligent search was at once instituted, which soon resulted in the recovery of her remains, frozen stiff on the prairie. Incidents of this kind are not uncommon among the frontiersmen. Mr. Carpenter was also among the early pioneers who suffered from the grasshopper raid. He describes them as appearing in the horizon like numerous black clouds, and as striking against his house like descending hail.
The first school district in the township was organized in 1874, and the first term of school was taught by Mrs. Carpenter in one of the rooms of her own house. Mr. Carpenter has served as justice of the peace of his township for eleven years and has been elected supervisor, the most important office in the town. He has also been postmaster of Major's postoffice since February, 1879. He is republican in politics and is one of the recognized party representatives in Buffalo county.

DEATH OF A PIONEER OF BUFFALO COUNTY
Mrs. Emily H. Carpenter of Cedar Township, Passes to Her Reward

Ravenna News: Mrs. Emily Carpenter died at the home of her son, Stephen Carpenter, in Cedar Township, Saturday morning, April 13, 1907, age 77 years.
Mr. and Mrs. Carpenter moved to Nebraska in 1872. They reached the frontier village of Gibbon on September 19, 1872, and moved to their homestead in Cedar township the following spring, and it was here that Mr. and Mrs. Carpenter made their home until the time of their death. Mr. Carpenter died June 17, 1903, and was buried in the United Presbyterian cemetery at Majors, and the remains of Mrs. Carpenter were laid beside him on Monday afternoon.
The seven children of the family are all living. John W. Carpenter lives at Whitman, Neb.; Hulda Carpenter McCool lives at Emmett, Idaho; while all the other children, Stephen B. and Cyril Carpenter and Mrs. Marion Schwasinger, Mirandy Whittaker and Lydia Whittaker, make their home in the vicinity of the old homestead in Cedar Township.
The Carpenter home, built on the old homestead, at what was for many years known as Majors' post office, was probably one of the very first frame buildings built in the county, north of the Platte River. It was a house of the style known as a "story-and-a-half" and in the upper rooms of this building Mrs. Carpenter taught the two first terms of school in Cedar Township. The school was attended by fifteen pupils, besides her own children. At night the school room was utilized by the Carpenter family as a sleeping room and it is related of this pioneer school, that when her younger pupils would grow sleepy Mrs. Carpenter would put the little fellows to bed, and let them sleep unit school was out. When a new sod school house was finally built in the district, the pupils expressed great dissatisfaction because the new school room contained no beds.
The Carpenter home was for more than a quarter of a century a United States post office. Mr. Carpenter being one of the oldest postmasters in the state in point of continuous service at the time he resigned on account of age and disability. This fact compled with the genial and hospitable nature of the Carpenter family made their home the social center of the a large territory during the early days, and it is doubtful if there were two more widely known and popular persons in the county than Mr. and Mrs. Carpenter.
Mrs. Carpenter had been failing rapidly during the past two or three years. A few days before her death she fell while passing through a doorway, the fall aggravating a hernia trouble from which she had suffered for many years and it was trouble arising from this source which resulted in her death at the time stated.
