10150. Asa Warren Carpenter

The Dartmouth College Library bought the Papers of Judge Frederick Vose  from
Charles Apfelbaum, Rare Books and Collections, Valley Stream, New York, in
1987. A fine selection of records from early (1825-ca. 1855) Cheshire County,
New Hampshire courts, this collection will provide researchers with a rare
glimpse of the legal and economic problems faced by New Hampshire residents
during the mid-1800s. Although the majority of the suits were brought for
non-payment of debts, there are also cases concerning theft, assault and  battery,
breach of promise, divorce, arson, and the settlement of  estates.

Hi John- I am still trying to research my husband's line from Rochester, NY. He took the 37 marker DNA- and it says a connect to RI Carpenter branch. Back in 2007 I sent you some new info on Asa W. Carpenter's widow Rachel (Grinnell) Carpenter. The genealogies all report her dying at the same time as Asa W. Carpenter (1847) however I found her remarriage to a George Gould in Rochester, NY. Asa W. and Rachel had a son George Warren Carpenter. The genealogies also report George W. Carpenter having a daughter Jennie who married a Hammer. I have since found out Jennie Hammer (married to George Hammer) was the daughter of George Gould and Rachel (Grinnell) Carpenter Gould- she was half sister to George W. Carpenter, not a daughter. Now, here is my research problem. I am looking for the roots of an Ira Carpenter of Rochester. He and his wife Adelia have an infant son buried in Mt Hope Cemetery in a plot Ira owned. One other person is buried in this plot-- Jennie Hammer (half sister of George W. Carpenter) Undoubtedly there is a connection between Asa and Rachel (Grinnell) Carpenter, and my Ira Carpenter for rachel's daughter Jennie to be buried in the same plot. You had given me the connections of Asa Carpenter back to Walpole NH. While this is great-- doesn't this line go back to the Rehoboth branch? As I mentioned, my husabdn's DNA says Providence, RI. So-- my bigger question is-- what is the proof that the Asa Carpenter who married Rachel Grinnell in Rochester was the son of Asa and Mary (Crehore) Carpenter of Walpole? Are there definitive records which establish the line, or is it based on the old written genealogies? As I mentioned- I found two big mistakes in the written genealogies as to Rachel's mistaken death as well as who Jennie Hammer's parents were and I am just wondering if there is a mistake in the line from Asa W. Carpenter and Rachel backwards. Could could e-mail any info, notes and sources for the connection of Asa W in Rochester to Asa and Mary (Crehore) in Walpole? I am flying out to Rochester this coming Wednesday for 4 days to do further research, and I'd like to know, so I don't repeat research, what exactly has been done on this line- thanks a ton! Laurie Carpenter

John
Thank you for the information! I have been in contact with the Rochester Genealogy Society and one of their officers has offered to do some Rochester record snooping. There has to be some record (newspaper, church) that mentions Ira as a son of Asa W. Carpenter, Sr.

I do have a bit of info to correct one thing you had (and further info to add to George Warren Carpenters descendency.

You have:

Asa married (MRIN:18429) Rachel Grinnell-48177 about 1841. Rachel was born about 1819 in ,, NH. She died about 1847 in , Saratoga, NY.

Rachell actually remarried after Asa's death to a George Gould. (She was still alive (census) in 1880.) I found this in the Rochester Republican 9-28-1848:

In this city, on Thursday evening, the 21st inst., by Rev. A. G. HALL, George GOULD, Esq., to Rachel A. CARPENTER, all of Rochester.
Rochester, Monroe, NY
Rochester Republican
Sept 28, 1848
By Rev. AG Hall, Pastor of the Third Presbyterian Church, in Rochester, New York.

The below census info is where I found George Warren Carpenter and his half sister Jennie (Gould) Hammer (1880 census).
The above George and Rachel A. (Carpenter) Gould lived on Sophia St. Rochester, same street as Ira. In 1850

George Gould age 46 born in Mass. Shoe dealer (ca. 1804)
Rachel A. Gould age 26 born in NY (ca 1823/4)
George B. Gould age 19 clerk born in NY
James Gould age 9 born in NY
George W. Carpenter age 9 born in NY (ca. 1842)

George W. Carpenter age 9 lived with the Goulds. Could Rachel have been a widow?
1860 census: George Gould is called a shoe dealer. Living n the home:
George Gould age 54 born is Mass.
Rachel Gould age 37 born in NY
James Gould age 19 born in NY a Bookkeeper
Ellen age 9 born in NY
Jenny age 7 born in NY
George Carpenter age 18 born NY (birth ca. 1842) R.R. Clerk
Katie Higgins age 18 born Ireland servant
Mary Welch age 14 servant

1870 census: George Gould called a shoe dealer. 237 ___  Street. First Ward, Rochester.
George Gould age 66 born in Mass
Rachel A. age 47 keeping house born NY
James H. Gould age 29 shoe dealer born NY

Cobb, F. D. H., of Fairport, was born at Fort Edward, N. Y., July 8, 1866. His father, the late Amos H. Cobb, was at that time in the paper business in New York city. He established in 1881 a canned goods factory, which has grown into one of the most important industries of Fairport. Mr. Cobb was, at the time of his father's death, engaged in the practice of law in Rochester, having been admitted to the bar in January, 1889. His preparatory studies were prosecuted at the Brooklyn Collegiate Polytechnic Institute, the Fairport Classical Union School and at Colgate University, from which he was graduated in 1886.
