11047. James Edward Carpenter

Married Mary Elizabeth Morris on April 30, 1871 Was married by his brother Charles HIgley Carpenter who was a Justice of the Peace.

20006. William Ray "Ray" Carpenter

He moved to Nebraska with his wife and children and died there in his 40’s. Grandma Gertie and I sent for the death certificate and received it.
The death certificate listed his cause of death as “Syplitic Damage to the Heart.”
I explained to Grandma that meant he had Syphilis at some time in his life…and
died young due to subsequent damage to his heart. Neither his wife nor children
had Syphilis to our knowledge so that means he contracted it pretty young and
had it more than 2 years before he married. Syphilis becomes “latent” after 2 years
and can no longer be transmitted. (I’m a Reproductive Health Educator at Family
Planning Health Services and have been teaching Safer Sex and STD information
now for more than 35 years.)
Grandma was appalled. Three years later, after her death, we went looking in the
file for Uncle Ray’s death certificate and it was gone. She burned it.
Grandma preferred that her family history be whitewashed, I guess. I don’t believe
in that. I think you tell the truth…let it all hang out …and then you deal with it.
