860. Rev. Elisha Carpenter Jr.

Number 556 in the Carpenter Memorial on page 109.
Family on page 207 (# 215)   A Baptist Clergyman.

He was Elder of the Second Baptist Church in Attleboro until 1789 when he
removed to Providence, (Saratoga COunty) NY where he died.  As a Baptist Clergyman, he preached
18 years in the South Baptist Church at Attleboro from 177 until about the
time he removed Providence Township, Saratoga county, whither his son
William had gone four years previously.  He subsequently preached for
some time in the Baptist Church at Galway, New York.

Elisha Carpenter, Jr., private,  enlisted in Captain Hill's Company, Col.
Carpenter's Regiment in the Rhode Island Alarm Dec. 16, 1776 and served 8 days.
Elisha Carpenter, private, in Captain Ide's Company, Col. Carpenter's Regiment
in the Rhode Island Alarm; enlisted Aug. 1, 1780, serving 9 days and marched
from Rehoboth to Tiverton.
It appears that it was this Elisha Carpenter, Jr. who was a private in Capt.
Peter Porter's Company, Col. John Brown's Regiment.
Enlisted 10 July 1777 and served 10 days in the Berkshire County Regiment.
In the Carpenter Memorial on page 109 and 110 is a transcript of a letter
written by Elisha Carpenter on 25 March 1802 from Providence, NY.  It describes
his journey from Attleboro to Providence which took 14 days.

NOTE:
On February 7, 1791, Saratoga County was formed from its parent, Albany County. http://www.saratogacountyny.gov/departments/county-historian/

One branch of of his grandchildren write their name as "CARPENTIER" claiming to be of French origin. But this is in error. They changed their names for business purposes to avoid confusion with another Carpenter business.

867. Reuben Carpenter

Number 563 in the Carpenter Memorial.  Page 110
Family on page 208 (# 217).
He resided in Sutton, MA.  He was active, enterprising and influential citizen,
from early manhood to his ripe old age.

NOTE:
Children sequence indicates possible missing children in 1787, 1797 and 1799.
Since Reuben's first wife died in 1798, the 1797 and 1799 dates are reasonably
bare.  Since children names are repeated after the young death of a child,
why isn't Amos repeated?  Could another Amos have been born in 1787?

MILITARY:
Reuben Carpenter enlisted as private in Capt. Abel King's Company, Col. Sear's
Regiment on Aug. 21, 1781 and served three months at Saratoga.
He enlisted again in Capt. Almos Ellis' Company, Col. Seth Bullard's Regiment

Springfield.  Enlisted again in Capt. John Carpenter's Company on June 1, 1780
and served eight months.  Also on roll dated Jan. 1782.
