12530. Elizabeth Josephine Carpenter

GRAVE:
Elizabeth J Carpenter Hodges
Birth: 11 Jul 1841 Williamstown, Berkshire County, Massachusetts, USA
Death: 31 May 1881 (aged 39) Rockton, Winnebago County, Illinois, USA
Burial: Rockton Township Cemetery, Rockton, Winnebago County, Illinois, USA
Memorial #: 194966411
Bio:
She married in Rockton 30 Dec 1867 to Pliny F Hodges
Rockton Herald, Friday, June 24, 1881
Died in Rockton, May 31st 1880 [1881], Lizzie J. Carpenter, wife of P. J. Hodges in the 40th year od her age. The cause of her death was the removal of an ovarian tumor.
The deceased was born in Williamstown, Mass., July 11th, 1841.
She was married in Rockton, December, 1867.
She was the daughter of Thomas and Ann Carpenter.
Besides her husband, she left one daughter, Anna, eleven years old; also her mother, 82 years, and one brother.
At the early age of twelve years, she gave her heart to Jesus, and ever after lived a consistent Christian life.
To a great natural amiability of disposition she added many of those qualities, which in social and religious life made her companionship doubly attractive.
When she contemplated taking that step, the result which was so uncertain, and life seemed to hang by a slender thread; with a resignation and cheerfulness almost unpareled by a mortal being, she turned her face from the fair scenes of earth when nature robed in its full tide of summer beauty, held ouyt fair promise in opening bud and blossom, in green filed and perfumed breezes.
She wrote letters of advice and comfort to her near relatives, and to her mother she said: "Dear mother, if we must be separated now it will not be long ere we shall meet where parying will be known no more." Yes, she said, she was upheld by an unseen hand, and from beyond the things of time and sense relieved  strength and comfort; and as her feet neared the dark stream that divides us from the heavenly lands, her faith never waivered. She said, "I am comforted, Jesus come."

CAPT. CARPENTER IS LAID TO REST

LOVELOCK, JAN. 27 - Funeral services were held Thursday afternoon at Arobio hall for Capt. L. N. Carpenter. The services were under the auspices of Humboldt lodge No. 27, F. & A. M., and the impressive Masonic funeral ceremonies were rendered. Grand Master L. G. Campbell spoke briefly, and Judge E. A. Ducker of Carson City delivered an eloquent eulogy.

Lovelock's business houses suspended during the funeral services and fully 300 people gathered to pay their last respects to one of the most highly esteemed citizens of the community.

Capt. Carpenter, a Civil War veteran, was one of Lovelock's oldest pioneers, having resided in the valley for fifty-four years. He was the largest land owner in the valley, active in state politics, twice elected senator, six years county commissioner and was vice-president of the First National Bank at the time of his death.

A firing squad from the American Legion Post, No. 6, gave the military burial salute at the lower valley cemetery sheer the last marks of regard were paid to Capt. Carpenter.

The honorary pall bearers were three American Legion members, E. A. Edwards, "Bud" Parr and Wayne Stoker; and three Civil War veterans, William Biggs, Alexander Van Winkle and J. H. Green, Sr.

Active pall bearers were Frank Tessier, Fred A. Preston, John Damm, James T. Goodin, Judge J. A. Callahan and William H. Cooper.

Besides his widow, three sons, William, Charles C. and D. Loomey, and a daughter. Mrs. Herman Porterfield are left to mourn.
