Dear John -
I am attaching my compilation of 5 generations of descendants of James
Carpenter (Carpenter Memorial #699). (It amounts to 38 pages of text, sources
and index) This incorporates a lot of information I had collected, plus the
information you had sent, supplemented by some from Kenneth Carpenter of
Grand Island NY, using also information from Priscilla Adams Wood and Francie
Fleek. I don't think I will be able to add much more in the foreseeable
future and believe this is the final version.
This is based on a GEDCOM (available if you desire) I have created in Family
Origins. A RTF file was printed from Family Origins, it was modified in Word
Perfect 9.0, and converted to the DOS TXT file attached.
Please let me know how this comes through and whether you find any serious
problems needing attention.
I hope this will be a valuable addition to your 2000 Carpenter compilation.
Max Roha.

[Ebenezer & ?], 1 male 10-16 [Abner = 13], 1
male 16-26 [Elijah = 24], 1 male >45 [James], 1 female 16-26 [Hannah = 20] and
2 females >45 [Bethia & (sister?)].  He
appeared on the census in 1810 in Brattleboro (Windham) VT. [8]  1810 census
lists 1 male 10-16 (Ebenezer ?), 1 male 16-26
[Abner=23], 1 male >45 [James=72], 2 females >45 [Bethia=>70 & (sister?)], A
son (Simeon = 31) is not listed..  He
appeared on the census in 1820 in Windham Co VT. [9]  1820 census listed man
>45 [James=82] and woman >45 [second
wife or Bethia's sister (?) seen in earlier censuses?], Bethia had died in
1813. Possible son, Simeon (age 41) is not listed.  He
died on 4 Nov 1829 in Brattleboro (Windham) VT. [10]  He has Ancestral File
number 8VWK-Q0. [4,11]  He was a farmer.
He was listed in Carp-Mem under #799. [12]  James Carpenter, living much of his
life in Brattleboro VT, was the father or
grandfather of several Carpenters who settled in the northeastern Ohio and
northwestern Pennsylvania frontier in the early to
middle 1800s. His descendants made significant contributions to the opening up
of the new lands west of the Allegheny Mountains.
He enlisted as a private in Capt. Cole's company, Col. Green's regiment; and
second in Capt. Nathaniel's company, Col.
Carpenter's regiment in the Rhode Island alarm, Dec. 8, 1776.  He served 16
days, marched from RI to Bristol. Enlisted a
third time in Capt. Peck's company, Col. Carpenter's regiment in the RI alarm
of July 27, 1782 and served 1 month, 15 days.
Fourth enlistment in Captain Brown's company, Col. Carpenter's regiment in the
RI alarm of Aug. 1, 1780, serving 7 days and
marched from Rehoboth to Tiverton. Third enlisted date (July 27, 1782) was
printed as 1728 in error. Carpenter memorial:
Enlisted as private in Captain Cole's company, Colonel Green's regiment; Second
time: in Captain Nathaniel's company.
Colonel Carpenter's regiment in the R.I. alarm, Dec. 8, 1776; served 16 days;
marched from Rhode Island to Bristol; Third
time: in Captain Peck's company, Colonel Carpenter's regiment in R.I. alarm
July 27, 1778, served 1 month, 15 days; Fourth
time: in Captain Brown's company, Colonel Carpenter's regiment in the R.I.
alarm Aug 1, 1780; served 7 days; marched from
Rehoboth to Tiverton. Moved from Rehoboth MA to Brattleboro VT about 1780.
There appear to a number of errors and uncertainties in Amos Carpenter's
compilation, specifically involving the families of
James Carpenter (#799) and of Josiah Carpenter (#170) (first cousins, once
removed) -  Abner (# 1919-c (born in Brattleboro
VT) married Nancy Hawes, Amos lists a Hannah Hawes. (The Mormon  "Family
Search" indicates an Abner (born in
Rehoboth MA) married a Hannah Hawes). Amos Carpenter lists both Abner (#1919-c)
and Abner (#1537, born in Attleboro
MA) having the care of brother Simeon (the latter Abner is most likely). Isaac
Burrows is listed as marrying both Hannah
Carpenter (#1919-b), and Hannah Carpenter (#602).  Abner (1919-c) and Abner
(#1537) are listed with the same names for a
son: "Welcome Allen", the former living in PA (true fact), the latter in NY
(maybe not). Many of Josiah's children were listed
as having been in Brattleboro VT (where James' family actually lived) en-route
to other locations. These statements point
toward a confusion Amos probably had while compiling such a monumental works as
the Carpenter Memorial. When we consider the state-of-the-art used for data
compilations in 1898, some confusion is not unexpected.
Except as noted, this line was supplied by Max Roha, Brecksville OH.
He had marriage banns published on 15 Aug 1767 in Rehoboth (Bristol) MA.  He
was married to Bethiah Ide (Hyde) on 3
Sep 1767 in Rehoboth (Bristol) MA. [13,11]  Bethiah Ide (Hyde) was born in
1738.  She was born between 1738 and 1740.
She died on 5 Apr 1813. [2]  "Died in 63rd year of age."  She has Ancestral
File number 8VWL-41. [11]  James Carpenter
and Bethiah Ide (Hyde) had the following children:
    +2     i. Josiah Carpenter.
    +3     ii.     Lucy Carpenter.
    +4     iii.    Chloe Elvia Carpenter.
5      iv.     Caleb Carpenter was born on 29 Oct 1771 in Rehoboth
(Bristol) MA. [2,14]  He died in England.  He
was listed in Carp-Mem under #1916. [15]
    +6     v. Rhoda Carpenter.
    +7     vi.     David Carpenter.
    +8     vii.    Elijah Carpenter.
    +9     viii.   Betsey Carpenter.
10     ix.     Simeon Carpenter [16] was born on 4 Nov 1779 in Rehoboth
(Bristol) MA. [17]  He was listed in Carp-
Mem under #1919a. [18]  Carpenter Memorial states "Simeon met with an accident
when a child and was cared for by the
family.  The father, James Carpenter, willed all his property to son Abner on
condition he support his brother Simeon during
his life.  In accordance with the will, Simeon was sent to his brother in PA."
However, he did not appear with James in 1810
nor 1820 census in VT nor with his brother, Abner, in the 1830 census in VT nor
the 1840 census in PA. CM also reports that
Welcome Allen Carpenter (#1537), son of Abner (#599), had the care of his Uncle
Simeon (#597) for a number of years.
There is possible confusion here.
    +11    x. Hannah Carpenter.
    +12    xi.     Abner Carpenter.
    +13    xii.    Ebenezer Carpenter.

Peter Carpenter

Number 790 in CARPENTER MEMORIAL on page 139.
Family on page 258 and 259 (# 283).  A Weaver.

He moved to Brattleboro VT before 1795. He was brought up a weaver and he
invented and constructed a loom whereby he wove all kinds of table linen, bed
spreads, etc.  When he was an aged man he taught his grandchildren and nephews
to weave.  He was called "The Smoking Peter".  Peter and his brothers in law
James, son of Ebenezer , with the families moved to VT and bought
where they could buy the cheapest. They did not settle very near each other.
Peter took his wife with him to Vermont, James left his wife in
Rehoboth for two years.

The new LDS online data can be used to real advantage. For example someone
had recorded a Providence birth certificate for Peter Carpenter (Amos
Carpenter, p. 139), son of Stephen Carpenter of Rehoboth. There is no mother
listed for the birth. Previous opinion was that Martha Hunt was the mother
of Peter and that Martha Hunt was an American Indian as circumstantially
suggested in Amos Carpenter. Stephen and Martha had children every other
year until Peter. Then there is a four or five year gap after Peter, then
two or more children by presumably Martha. Then Martha passes away and
Stephen does not remarry for ten years. My reading of this is that Stephen
had a possible Narragansett mistress. After Peter was born to her things
naturally went badly between he and Martha for a number of years, but
finally settled down for a while. Naturally, Stephen didn't remarry after
Martha's death, and lived with his mistress for the decade until she faded
from the picture. The comments of the Mrs. Barney in the Amos Carpenter (p.
80) notation for Stephen Carpenter also can point to only Peter as having
the Indian ancestry. Thus Peter Carpenter was an illegitimate half-breed, a
rough road in 1700s Massachusetts. He also married his first cousin Jemima
Carpenter, who herself was a descendant of both Rehoboth William's sons
Samuel and William. Thus Peter's children descend twice from Samuel and also
from his brother William. Martha's grave is located respectfully next to
Stephens in front of the Newman church. BC

The LDS data online are just the same as they were when they were
available only in Family History Centers and a few libraries.  In short,
they can provide many useful clues, but they are brimming full with
errors.  For example, the vital records of Providence do not include the
birth of Peter Carpenter, nor of any other children of Stephen, with or
without a mother.  Anything you find in the AF or the IGI needs to be
verified before you give it any credence.  John Chandler

History of Newark Valley, NY FROM OUR COUNTY AND ITS PEOPLE
A MEMORIAL HISOTRY OF TIOGA COUNTY
NEW YORK EDITED BY: LEROY W. KINGMAN W. A. FERGUSSON & CO. ELMIRA, N. Y., 189?

...
The story of the journey of Elisha Wilson and his companions from old Stockbridge to this region is an oft told tale, yet is never without interest. The party of adventurous pioneers comprised Elisha Wilson, as guide as well as prospective settler, Isaac and Abraham Brown, Daniel Ball, John Carpenter, and two others named Dean and Norton, both of whom left the party at Choconut and there made a settlement. All left Stockbridge February 23, 1791, and after a journey covering a period of just thirty-seven days, reached their destination on April 1, 1791, and on that day founded what was for many years known in local annats as Brown's Settlement, but in later years as old town of Berkshire, and still later the towns of Berkshire, Newark Valley, and Richford. In the course of their journey the party was compelled to leave a part of their goods at Oquaga, and after they had arrived at and established the settlement all the pioneers except young Wilson returnes to Oquaga for the needed supplies. In their absence Mr. Wilson tapped the maples and made 150 pounds of sugar. Of these original settlers and pioneers Elisha Wilson, Abraham Brown and John Carpenter were residents in the territory afterward a part of this town, and are therefore entitled to first mention in this chapter.
...
John Carpenter, of the pioneer party, came in the capacity of employee of the Browns and assisted them in making their improvements. He returned to Stockbridge every winter, and. there about the first of January, 1797, he married. A few weeks later he started for the settlement, where he arrived in good season and was living with Ezbon Slosson's family. April 10, Isaac Brown died, upon which Carpenter at once proposed to take and work the Brown farm, hut three days later Carpenter himself died and was buried in the settlement graveyard by the side of Mr. Brown. His death, April 13, 1797, was the first in Newark Valley and the second in the settlement. ...
FIRST EVENTS OF TOWN HISTORY. 1790-Elisha Wilson and Abraham Brown first visited the Boston purchase. 1791-Elisha Wilson, Abraham Brown, Isaac Brown, Daniel Ball and John Carpenter made the first settlement.. 1796-David McMaster taught the first school in Elisha Wilson's bark-covered cabin. 1797-John Carpenter died April 13.

Dear John R. --- Glad to hear the additions to the English lines CD
project are working out.  Enclosed is the one I needed to work on before
sending.  It is a very interesting line.  I have over 30 pages of
information on them, published an article on them back in 1984 (cited
below), and have been gathering more as it becomes available.  I kept it
brief for the CD, since most of the detail would not be of interest to
genealogists and can be accessed through the publication.  --- Terry
REGARDING: Richard Carpenter or RI, British West Florida and the Natchez

SC (South Carolina) was involved in trade with New England and several New England Carpenters established merchant or mariner outposts in the southern port cities.  The Oliver mentioned in the SC archives was a mariner, possibly ABC #208.
**** The Richard was a merchant from Rhode Island who traveled throughout the southeast -- you can read more about him in my article "Richard Carpenter, Pioneer Merchant of British West Florida and the Natchez District of Spanish West Florida," in the National Genealogical Society Quarterly, Vol. 72, No. 1 (March 1984), pp. 51-62.  He is ABC #621.  ****
The Dan Carpenter in Camden SC is ABC #1525, pp. 216, 370.  (His brother Timothy #1527 was an itinerant Methodist preacher who settled in Tennessee.)  Lucy (Blanding) Carpenter, widow of Phanuel Carpenter ABC #2028, also lived in Camden SC.  The Abiah Carpenter may be ABC #719, who is unaccounted for in ABC.  Margaret and husband George Carpenter lived near Abiah and were probably related, but again, not enough evidence to prove anything.  The later Carpenters in the piedmont counties were from PA, VA, and NC lines.  Lots of interesting possibilities in the South!

Subject: A Carpenter mystery?
Good morning -- I write in the hope that you can help me with a Carpenter mystery. I've just reviewed the Collins papers at Tulane, and came across a letter from Richard Carpenter (1729-1788) in Mississippi to John Collins (1717-1795) in Rhode Island. He address John as "Dear Brother" and closes "I am with best respects to your self & family in which my spouse & children joins, your affectionate brother, Richard Carpenter." Richard Carpenter married Ruth Collins (1724-1776 -- sister of John Collins) in 1756, when RC was 27 and Ruth 32. All well and good *except* the letter is dated March 4th, 1744. This would make Richard 15 by my reckoning...not married ("my spouse"), not with children. Is there another Richard Carpenter who might be writing to John Collins addressing him as brother? I am happy to send you an image of the letter if that would be helpful. I am very grateful for any information you might be able to provide!
Best wishes,

Daphne,
After a quick check on line, I was disappointed in the lack of history for that place and time period. Below is from Google Books indicating seizures of American boats and issues. See A) below.
The letter specifically cites English vessels which indicates that Richard is not English but of American Colony persuasion. But trades with the English at Jamaica AND reference to the American dollar indicates this was 1785 or later. More likely 1786 or 1787.
That Richard C-20424 died in 1788 narrows the window considerably.
The seizure of English ships could have been part of what A) below indicates.
Sadly, most codes might be one thing to one and another to someone else. Without knowing more details and enlisting an expert, we may never know what was meant.
Still, 44 meant something!
