Rear Admiral Charles Carroll Carpenter (February 27, 1834 – April 1, 1899) was an officer in the United States Navy. He participated in the African Slave Trade Patrol, fought in the American Civil War, served as Commander of the Asiatic Squadron, and was recalled to duty briefly during the Spanish-American War.

Naval career
Carpenter was born in Leyden, Massachusetts, on February 27, 1834, the son of David N. Carpenter and the former Maria P. Newcomb.[1] Appointed a midshipman from Massachusetts on October 1, 1850, he was attached to the sloop-of-war USS Portsmouth in the Pacific Squadron from 1851 to 1855. He attended the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland, from 1855 to 1856 and, upon completing his studies, was promoted to passed midshipman on June 20, 1856.[2][3][4]

Carpenter was in the Home Squadron and in special service between 1856 and 1858, serving consecutively aboard the steam frigates USS Merrimack, USS Roanoke, and USS Colorado and the brig USS Dolphin; he was aboard Dolphin on August 21, 1858 when she captured a slave ship, the brig Echo, with 300 African slaves on board. He was promoted to lieutenant on January 23, 1858. [5][2][3][4]

Carpenter 's next duty was aboard a receiving ship at Boston, Massachusetts, in 1858 and 1859, and he was promoted to master on January 22, 1858 and to lieutenant the next day. He reported for duty aboard the screw steamer USS Mohawk in 1859. Mohawk cruised off the coast of Cuba in 1859 and 1860 and captured the slave ship Wildfire on April 20, 1860, freeing 530 African slaves. She later guarded Naval Station Key West, in Key West, Florida, from armed groups seeking to seize it from the United States Government in the months prior to the outbreak of the American Civil War.[6] [2][3][4]

Civil War
Carpenter was still aboard Mohawk when the Civil War broke out in April 1861. He served aboard her that year in the Gulf of Mexico in the Union blockade of the Confederate States of America, both off Texas and in the East Gulf Blockading Squadron. In 1862 he was aboard the screw steamer USS Flag in the South Atlantic Blockading Squadron, participating in the capture of two blockade runners, the steamers Anglia and Emily, and being promoted to lieutenant commander on July 16, 1862. In 1863 he transferred to the monitor USS Catskill, also in the South Atlantic Blockading Squadron, and participated in attacks on the Confederate defenses of Charleston, South Carolina, on April 7, July 10, and August 17, 1863. Later in 1863 he was assigned to the staff of the U.S. Naval Academy, where he remained through the end of the war in 1865.[2][3][4]

Post Civil War
After service aboard the flagship of the Asiatic Squadron, the screw sloop-of-war USS Hartford, from 1866 to 1867, Carpenter became commanding officer of the screw sloop-of-war USS Wyoming in the same squadron in 1868. He then performed duty at the Portsmouth Navy Yard in Kittery, Maine, from 1868 to 1870 and was promoted to commander on February 10, 1869. After another short assignment at the Portsmouth Navy Yard in 1871, he returned to sea as commanding officer of the screw steamer USS Nantasket in the North Atlantic Squadron from 1871 to 1872. He was back at the Portsmouth Navy Yard from 1872 to 1875 on equipment duty.[2][3][4]

Carpenter was commanding officer of the gunboat USS Huron in the North Atlantic Squadron from 1875 to 1876, before another tour at the Portsmouth Navy Yard in 1878. Promoted to captain on March 25, 1880, Carpenter was on equipment duty at the Boston Navy Yard in Boston, Massachusetts, from 1880 to 1882, then returned to USS Hartford as her commanding officer from 1882 to 1884; during his tour, Hartford carried a team of American and British scientists from Callao, Peru, to the Caroline Islands in the Pacific Ocean to observe the total solar eclipse of May 6, 1883. He commanded the receiving ship USS Wabash at the Boston Navy Yard from 1888 to June 1890 .[2][3][4]

Carpenter was commandant of the Portsmouth Navy Yard from June 1890 to January 15, 1894, and was promoted to commodore on May 15, 1893. He became commander of the Asiatic Squadron on September 1, 1894 and was promoted to rear admiral on November 11, 1894; the Sino-Japanese War of 1894-1895 was a major concern of his tour as squadron commander.

Retirement
Carpenter relinquished command of the Asiatic Squadron on December 21, 1895 and retired from the Navy upon reaching the mandatory retirement age of 62 on February 28, 1896. He resided in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, during his retirement.

Recall to active duty
Carpenter was recalled to active duty during the Spanish-American War of 1898, returning to the Portsmouth Navy Yard to serve as its commandant from April to August 1898. He then returned to retirement.[4][7]

Death
Carpenter had begun to suffer from severe nervous disorders during the final years of his naval career and sought medical treatment soon after his retirement. His condition improved, but around mid-February 1899 his health went into decline again, and he spent six weeks in the Adams Nervine Asylum in the Jamaica Plain neighborhood of Boston, Massachusetts, for treatment. Although his condition again showed signs of improvement, he committed suicide at the asylum by shooting himself in the head on the morning of April 1, 1899. He was survived by his wife, three sons, and two daughters.[8][3]

Carpenter is buried at Proprietors Burying Ground in Portsmouth, New Hampshire.[9]

John,

Thanks for the reply. My father did most of the work up until this
point and I'm playing catch-up, trying to independently verify his info.
My grandfather grew up on Powerline Rd just SW of Holley in the house
his father grew up in ("Carpenters' Corners"). My grandfather on up
to David (1818-1899) are at the Hillside Cemetery in Clarendon,
Orleans County, New York. It looks like David's father Solomon went
to Wisconsin, but we don't know what happened to Solomon after that.
http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~nyorlean/hllsdc.htm
I have a copy of Thomas G's will mentioning his wife Jane and
children Jonathan, Solomon, Sylvester, Robert, Deborah Knowles,
Susannah Foster, and Cornelia Sweet. Actually, I can only lay my hand
on a transcript at the moment, as I'm not sure where my father saw a
scan/copy of it. But it does mention giving land in Murray, Orleans
Co., NY to a Solomon.
http://stephentowngenealogy.com/research/willabstracts/
I have scans of other documents related to the will, such as notices
and an inventory list.
"I also give and bequeath to my son Solomon Carpenter and his
children, the use and occupancy of a lot of land number thirty two in
the town of Murray and in the county of Orleans and state of New
York. Said lot is bounded on the north by lot number thirty three, on
the east by lot number thirteen, and on the south by lot number
thirty one, and on the west by lot number fifty one containing one
hundred and four 16/100 acres of land."
"Landmarks of Orleans County, New York" by Isaac S. Signor also has
some pertinent info.
https://archive.org/details/landmarksoforlea00sign
p. 386/434 Solomon Carpenter, born in Rensselaer County, NY in
1787, came early to Murray, and took up land joining Holley on the
east. In 1823 he moved to Wisconsin, where he died in 1846. Of his
eight children only David is living.
p. 379/427 The land of Murray was owned jointly by the State of
Connecticut and the Pultney estate, and that belonging to the latter
was not surveyed and put into market until 1821. The Connecticut
lands were sold earlier. No records of articles or contracts with the
early settlers on the Hundred Thousand acre tract are accessible;
hence it is possible to give only a list of the first deeds. The lots
in the town north from the Ridge road, and one tier of lots south of
the same, are numbered from west to east and from north to south.
South from that road, except the one tier, they are numbered from
south to north and from east to west; and the same order in each case
is followed here regardless of chronological arrangement. These lots
were deeded as follows:

p. 381/429 L. 13, Thos. G. Carpenter, 51.27a., May 3, 1822;
Spencer C. Higgins, 51.27a.
L. 14, Thomas G. Carpenter, 97.49a. Feb. 22, 1825
L. 32, ______Carpenter, 104, 16a.
p. 383/431 L. 187, Joshua Garrison, 50.37a. Oct. 1, 1853; David
Carpenter, 50.37a. Oct. 1, 1853
L. 188, D. Carpenter, 20a. Nov. 1, 1855

I'm still looking for more info. My dad mentioned deeds showing the
transfer of the land in Holley down through to my grandfather, but I
don't see the scans in the folder he gave me. They are probably
somewhere in his office. He last worked on genealogy a couple of
years ago so he'll have to dig for them. This is part of one he transcribed:
"...in the town of Murray county of Orleans and state of New York and
being known and distinguished as lot number thirty two (32) in
township number three (3) in the one hundred acre or Connecticut
tract so called being the same farm formerly owned by Thomas G
Carpenter late of Stephentown Rensselaer county and state of New York
deceased in his lifetime and lately in the possession and occupation
of Solomon Carpenter of the town of Murray aforesaid son and heir at
law of the said Thomas G Carpenter the said David Carpenter and Jonah
Carpenter being sons of the said Solomon Carpenter and having
severally interest and estates in the premises above described by
virtue of the last will and testament of the said Thomas G Carpenter
deceased reference being made to said last will and testament and the
said David Carpenter having also an interest and estate in said
premises by virtue of a deed to him by and from the said Solomon
Carpenter bearing date the 12th day of March 1840 and recorded in
Orleans county clerks office in book of deeds number 18 on page 450
and the said George C Smith above named having an interest and estate
in said premises by virtue of a deed from Joel Carpenter bearing date
on the 13th day of March 1845 and also a deed from William Carpenter
and his wife dated on the 8th day of September 1845 the said Joel and
the said William being sons of the said Solomon Carpenter and having
respective interests..."
I know transcriptions aren't good enough. I'll keep digging.
