Biography of Edward H. Ehle (1841 to [past 1891])
Provided by Darci (Djohns genealogy web page) Daniel H. Weiskotten 8/10/1999.
Edward Ehle (1841 to [past 1891]) From Biographical History of Clark and
Jackson Counties (Wisconsin), Lewis Publishing Co., pages 307-308
Edward A. EHLE, of Abbotsford, Clark County [Wisconsin], was born in Cazenovia,
Sullivan [Madison] County, New York, June 8, 1841, the son of Harrison
Ehle, deceased, who was born in the Mohawk Valley, near Canajoharie.
In 1851 he emigrated to Fond du Lac County, Wisconsin and settled in the wild
woods of Forrest Township. He and his sons cleared eighty acres and were
surrounded with Indians, mostly the Winnebago and Manitowoc tribes.
Edward A., our subject, was reared to farm life, and received his education in
a log cabin, with pine-logs for seats, and with a shed roof made of scoops. He
was a soldier in the late war in Company H, Thirty-seventh
Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry, served two and a half years, and was in the
battles of Cold Harbor, Bermuda
Hundred, siege of Petersburg, Weldon Railroad, Poplar Grove Church, Fort Hall,
and others. He was not seriously wounded, but had a slight flesh wound on his
neck over the jugular vein, and also had several holes shot in his clothing,
and on the Weldon raid had his canteen split open.
After the war Mr. Ehle resumed farming on the old homestead until January,
1874, when he came to Colby, [Wisconsin] this county, but settled just across
the line in Marathon County. Wild game was then plentiful, and he shot
hundreds of deer and a few bear, but declining health caused him to leave this
farm, and in 1888 he removed to Colby.
On May 20, 1890, he settled in Abbotsford, (WI) where he engaged in the saloon
and hotel business. He keeps a quiet house, and never sells to an intoxicated
man. Mr. Ehle was married November 30, 1869, to Miss Melissa
Carpenter, a daughter of Henry and Maria (Westenhouse) Carpenter. The father is
deceased, and the mother now lives with our subject.
Mr. and Mrs. Ehle have four children: Edna, born October 7, 1870; Edward A.,
November 25, 1873; Marshall P., April 1, 1882, and Madge, January 21, 1884.
While in Green Township, Marathon County, Mr. Ehle was a member of the Side
Board. Socially he is a member of the G.A.R., and politically votes for the man
regardless of party.

E-MAIL: New England - Southern Carpenter Line. Date: Sun, 3 Jun 2001 From: Terry Lee Carpenter
.
Hi John,
I found this English line from New England that wound up on the South, and thought you might be interested in it too. I am sending it the way it was written -- have not verified the line with the CE CD yet.
William Sanders Carpenter, born 9 Apr 1814 at East Greenwich RI, a son of Gardiner (ABC #4082, p. 439) and Patience (Larkin) Carpenter of Jeremiah and Hannah (Knowles) Carpenter of Jeremiah and Abigail (Sheldon) Carpenter of Daniel and Renewed (Smith) Carpenter of Solomon and Elizabeth (Tefft) Carpenter of Samuel and Sarah (Readaway) Carpenter of William and Abigail Carpenter of William and Abigail Carpenter who came from England to America in 1638 [JTW&C], died 1884 at Charleston SC [BL].
His mother was named Ida Willoughby [BL]. He moved to Charleston SC c1842, and married on 3 Aug 1843 at Charleston SC to Margaret Elford Enslow (born c1826, died 16 Sep 1904 in Charleston). He was enumerated as a bricklayer in the 1850 census of Charleston Distr. SC [NAMP] and reportedly came to Charleston to work on the Charleston sea wall [BL]. Five children [BL], of whom are in the 1850 census:
1. Josephine Carpenter, born c1844 in SC.
2. William Willoughby Carpenter, born c1849, died c1904.
He was a cadet at the South Carolina Military Academy, Charleston SC, and later a merchant in Charleston. He married Rachel Sarah Bean [JTW&C]. Son [JTW&C]:
2a. Ernest Willoughby Carpenter, born 24 Aug 1874 at Charleston SC; he was a surgeon [JTW&C].
If I find any more about them, I'll send it on. Would appreciate receiving anything you find different on this
line. Best regards, Terry.
NOTE: "His mother was named Ida Willoughby." Was this a new marriage for his father Gardiner Carpenter? Was William Sanders Carpenter adopted? Nope - new marriage! JRCE-MAIL:
